Was also a Country where because of that contribution, that vital, life affirming work, she could walk into any room and instantly command the same respect as the Prime Minister must you not because those are my values, that is what i believe and those are the values of the britain that we will build. What will people get to show for it . They will get a Country Thatis for it . They will get a Country that is future abound, with new found respect for service, with the balance towards the interests of Working People, confident in its values and stories, because together, we took action. Millions with your better off, notjust being told that they are better off by politicians, going to the supermarket without a calculator because the nations numbers now add up, more money in their pocket to do the things they love, more faith in their public services because, once again, labour rebuilt them, and nhs facing the future, more Security And Dignity at work. Town centre is thriving, streets safe, borders controlled at last, clean energy, national renewal, new homes, new towns, new hospitals, schools, a new future for our other children, Thatis Future for our other children, that is what people will get, and mark my words, we will deliver it. Cheering people said we couldnt change the party, but we did. People said we wouldnt win across britain, but we did. People say we cant deliver national renewal, but we can and we will. Cheering we will stabilise our economy, get out it tory rot, and deliver the mandate of change, a britain built to last, built with respect, built with pride because together, we have shown that britain belongs to you. Thank you, Conference Cheering thank you. Thank you, conference. Thank you. Thank you, conference. Thank you. Cheering applause thank you, conference. Music. Studio there are, we have the prime Minister Keir Starmer joined by victoria, lady starmer, his wife. He has been on his feet were about one hour, and listening to that along with me was our political correspondent alex forsyth, at the conference in liverpool. A Standing Ovation at The End and the beginning and a few the middle, it went down well. Yes. Middle, it went down well. Yes, ou did, middle, it went down well. Yes, you did. It middle, it went down well. Yes, you did. It was middle, it went down well. Yes, you did, it was a middle, it went down well. Yes, you did, it was a labour middle, it went down well. Yes, you did, it was a Labour Party i you did, it was a Labour Party conference after all, and the labour Prime Minister giving a speech but it was notable some of the biggest Standing Ovations he got during the course of that speech, was when he spoke about the violent disorder, the riots that we saw take place over the summer and Keir Starmer you some pretty strong language, said that it was thuggery, and that racism is vile, and that roused the crowd and got them to their feet. Broadly speaking, the tone and overall theme of this speech was pretty much as we expected. Talking about the longer term plan, and he was setting out clearly that, from his perspective, the public might have to suffer a bit of pain, whether that is economic pain, whether that is economic pain and decisions around the Public Finances and more specifically, if you want renewable energy, you might have to have pylons built above ground, if you want more prison places, we might have to have new prisons built near your home, if you want more homes overall, there is going to be House Building in every community, so it was the kind of message that, as we said at the beginning, this notion of a shared struggle that you are trying to convey, he was also trying to convey, he was also trying to convey, he was also trying to set out his vision for what then would come next, talking about economic security, and economic growth. That would then make the Country feel better off and everyone within the Country feel better off also. There was one moment towards The End of the speech where there was a protester who stood up and was quickly thrown out, and sir Keir Starmer used the words he had not used before, we are no longer a party of protest, we are a change Labour Party. It was a wide ranging speech, and we can have a listen to some of what Keir Starmer said in his first Conference Speech as a labour Prime Minister. I change the Labour Labour Prime Minister. I change the Labour Party labour Prime Minister. I change the Labour Party to labour Prime Minister. I change the Labour Party to Restore Labour Prime Minister. I change the Labour Party to restore it i the Labour Party to restore it to the the Labour Party to restore it to the service of working pe0ple. To the service of Working People, and that is exactly what people, and that is exactly what we people, and that is exactly what we will do for britain, but what we will do for britain, but i what we will do for britain, but I Will what we will do for britain, but I Will not do it with easy answers. But I Will not do it with easy answers, I Will not do it with false answers, I Will not do it with false hope, not now, not ever. That false hope, not now, not ever. That is false hope, not now, not ever. That is how false hope, not now, not ever. That is how we got here in the first that is how we got here in the first place that is how we got here in the first place. So, i know, after everything youve been through, how hard everything youve been through, how hard it is to hear a politician ask for more, but deep politician ask for more, but deep down, i think you also know deep down, i think you also know that our Country does need a Long Term plan, that we Cant Turn a Long Term plan, that we Cant Turn back a Long Term plan, that we Cant Turn back. The state of our Country turn back. The state of our Country is turn back. The state of our Country is real. However, i would Country is real. However, i would also say this. This is a government of service. And that means, government of service. And that means, whether we agree or not, iwiii means, whether we agree or not, Iwiii Atways means, whether we agree or not, I Will always treat you with the respect of candour, not the distraction the respect of candour, not the distraction of bluster, and the Truth Distraction of bluster, and The Truth is distraction of bluster, and The Truth is that, if we take Long Term, truth is that, if we take Long Term, tough decisions now, if we stick term, tough decisions now, if we stick to term, tough decisions now, if we stick to the driving purpose behind we stick to the driving purpose behind everything we do, higher economic behind everything we do, higher economic growth, Living Standards rising, in every community, The Nhs facing the future, community, The Nhs facing the future, Waiting Lists at your hospital future, Waiting Lists at your hospital doubt, safest piece in your hospital doubt, safest piece in your community, stronger borders, your community, stronger borders, more opportunities for your borders, more opportunities for your children, clean British Energy your children, clean British Energy powering your home, then that tight energy powering your home, then that light at The End of this tunnel, that light at The End of this tunnel, that dream that belongs to you. Tunnel, that dream that belongs to you. We tunnel, that dream that belongs to you, we get there much more quickly to you, we get there much more cuickl. To you, we get there much more cuickl. ~.. quickly. So, alex, there was a lot about quickly. So, alex, there was a lot about domestic quickly. So, alex, there was a lot about domestic issues. Quickly. So, alex, there was a L Lot about domestic issues. Very little in the way of Foreign Policy i suppose. But, very much, that message of change beginning, but it has got to be costed, we cannot live beyond our means, and once again criticising the previous conservative government. Perhaps unsurprising, we have heard a lot of criticism of the previous conservative government during this conference. In terms of Foreign Policy, he did mention the rising tensions between israel and hezbollah, called for Restraint And De escalation at the border between israel and lebanon, but a majority of the speech was focused on domestic issues. A Couple Policy announcements, he did pledge to introduce the hillsborough law, something that Keir Starmer in opposition made a commitment to introduce, which would place a Duty Of Candour On Public officials, so that they have to effectively tell The Truth, and the aim is to try and prevent some of the injustices and long struggle is that people have had to get a Sense Ofjustice after some public scandals like hillsborough, and the infected Blood Scandal and others. That is going to come in. He talked about housing for heroes, he made a promise that veterans would get access to housing, also Care Leavers and victims of domestic abuse. We dont know the full details of this policy yet. It will be interesting to see the detail because we know that is huge pressure on the Housing Market at the moment. Talking about social homes, in particular, being under huge pressure, with huge Waiting Lists for those, and another final announcement he may, Gb Energy, the new Energy Company the government is establishing, he said it would have headquarters in aberdeen. I dont think that game as much of a surprise to anybody because that had been talked about for some time to stop we knew that it would be in scotland but, confirmation that it would be in aberdeen. In terms of the town, i think you are trying to say to the public, i am you are trying to say to the public, iam being you are trying to say to the public, i am being upfront and honest with you about what is still to come but stick with me and things might get better overall. Before his speech i spoke to the Home Secretary Yvette Cooper and asked what we might expect from this first beta from a labour Prime Minister and this is what she told me, a little earlier in the day. This is a hugely ambitious and radical mission not just for the government but the whole Country. We think we should be halving Knife Crime over the next ten years and Half Violence against women and girls which is a national emergency and has not been treated as such. Setting up practical plans including strengthening the law, Ronans Law to ban ninja swords, crackdown on online knife sales. Also to tackle violence against women and girls making sure we have domestic abuse experts in control rooms so victims of domestic abuse get the immediate and urgent response they need. A huge amount to do but this is about safer streets for everyone. Another huge Challenge Underyour Remit is more than 20,000 people making the crossing this year. The Prime Minister was in italy looking at the work they are doing, to stop people leaving tunisia and libya. Are you looking at similar deals with countries other than france to prevent migrants making that crossing . We need to strengthen Border Security and go after the criminal gangs undermining Border Security putting lives at risk. We have seen terrible tragedies in the channel with women and children dying in flimsy small boats. We have set up a new Border Security command. Its central work is to work with other countries, Law Enforcement across europe, and the work italy is doing with other countries across North Africa and beyond, to prevent dangerous journeys taking place in the first place and go after criminal gangs exploiting people and doing so much damage. It was your speech this morning. It is the prime Ministers Speech this afternoon, the first speech for a labour Prime Minister in 15 years. The Prime Minister has been accused of being too gloomy. We are imagining Hearing A Shift in tone from him. Will he outline any detail of what the government will do to make people feel better off . The Prime Minister will set his speech out this afternoon. The things he has been talking about is how we fit the foundations so we can raise Living Standards, see public services get better and people no longer let down, so britain is in the service of Working People across the Country. So much to do. We have already talked about the need to build more homes, to tackle Knife Crime, Town Centre crime, the need to get Gb Energy going and tackle the problems on public transport networks. There is a huge amount under way. In three months we have been taking lots of action. This is about looking forward to the future and the opportunities we want to build in our Country together. It is a significant conference for labour but it hasnt been wall to Wall Celebration with questions about freebies, leaks about sue gray, contention over the Winter Fuel Payment. Its been bumpier than perhaps you would have liked. You are a new government but is this a government that has got a grip . We have had three months of government in post. Already in those three months we have taken a series of decisions and made sure we have got work under way across the board. Some of those decisions end up being hard, which reflects the ia years of really bad damage the conservatives have done to our Country. Things need to be repaired. Step by step. All governments get affected by issues along the way. We have a core sense, these missions we are setting out for the future of the Country about getting the economy all growing more strongly, cutting Waiting Lists and improving The Nhs, safer streets for communities. In each of those areas we have a government that is really focused, determined on those missions, and of course we need to work with communities across the Country to make that happen. But we should be proud of our Country and optimistic for the future if we get those decisions right. I have now joined i have nowjoined by the Health Secretary Wes Streeting after the prime Ministers Speech, that you are rushing in so quickly as the Crowd File out of the conference hall. The first speech from a labour Prime Minister to conference for a while, did you find it inspirational . For a while, did you find it inspirational . For a while, did you find it ins irational . Inspirational . Never mind what i saw, inspirational . Never mind what i saw. People inspirational . Never mind what i saw, people across inspirational . Never mind what i saw, people across the i saw, people across the conference over on the peak time after time because what the Prime Minister did is set out our Country Vision and plan to get us there, and reassure people that the hard choices we are making now a part of a brighter future are making now a part of a brighterfuture and are making now a part of a brighter future and levelling with people about the choices and Trade Offs and the things that will make a difference to peoples lights, practical policies, taking action on veterans homelessness, making sure that young people get access to new Foundation Apprenticeship so that they can access great well paid jobs and skills, but it was the argument as much as anything that i thought was really interesting. It was the argument about taking on vested interests, giving the Country a sense of Service Pack for this government and giving People Security and opportunity in their lives, whatever their background. I thought it was visionary, and it is a vision that will notjust mobilise the Labour Party but mobilise the Country because we cannot do these things without government of course, but government has got to work in partnership with business, to make sure all of us are making a contribution to rebuilding our Country. Rebuilding our Country. Weaver told what to rebuilding our Country. Weaver told what to expect rebuilding our Country. Weaver told what to expect before rebuilding our Country. Weaver told what to expect before the | told what to expect before the primacy got on his feet and the message today, was to be a bit more optimistic than some of the sound bites we have heard in the Run Up to this point but there was still a lot in there about unpopular choices and Trade Offs, if you want clean energy got your pilots, if you want to have you homes you will have building in your communities, you think people are going to take Back Pain . No it is about treating people with with respect, people are not stupid, what they want is a leader who will level be honest with them about what is required. With them about what is required with them about what is reuuired. , required. To get the Country back on its required. To get the Country back on its feet required. To get the Country back on its feet and required. To get the Country back on its feet and thriving | back on its feet and thriving in the 21st century. The Prime Minister set out those choices and Trade Offs and explain exactly where he is, where the government is, people will take heart from that. The other Thing A Prime Minister knew coming into this conference is that he has been really honest with people, as has the chancellor, about the state of Public Finances and the choices thatis Public Finances and the choices that is inflicting on us, as we try to balance the books in the national interest. He also knew that having made the arguments about fixing the foundations over the summer, he knew that he wanted to come into this conference describing the home that he is going to build on top of those stronger foundations and i think you did that, i think there was real vision, a new plan, and treating people with the respect they deserve by setting out the choices and
