Both the democratic nominee Tim Walz and his republican Rivaljd Vance have been picked in part for their mid western roots in the battle for rural voters, as our reporter John Sudworth reports from nebraska. In americas great midwest, votes can be hard To find quite literally. Shell be your friend forever. In nebraska, there are three times as many cows as people. But this is a deeply conservative state, and though sparsely populated, even here, one of Donald Trumps key messages is resonating. The border. Hes going To shut that down. Its just unbelievable To me just To let people walk in. 0k. Theres people like me ranching down there. Hes going To. Hes going To deport all these people that should never have been here in the first place. Our message To Kamala Harris is, how dare you call the citizens of your own country bad people because they dont want a flood of illegal migration in their country . Mr trumps Running Mate is pushing the same message. Jd vance was chosen in part because he has midwestern roots. But so does Kamala Harris s choice, Tim Walz. Now, i grew up in butte, nebraska. Cheering. A Town of 400 people. Nebraskan born, democrats hope he might help them win some rural voters back. Its not going To be easy. The Misinformation Swirling through americas Political Machine is reaping its harvest here Too. Dennis fujan, a republican running for nebraskas state legislature, is also deeply concerned about immigration. Threatening Social Security benefits. Theyre siphoning medicare medical benefits. Just To sTop you there. Im not. Im not sure that undocumented migrants are able To claim Social Security. What i do see is that they definitely are getting Health Care that they arent paying for. Although many pay taxes. Huh . Many of them do pay taxes. And they do. Yeah. If youre not a citizen, you shouldnt be. You shouldnt be voting. And i dont know if they are, but i hear they are. Sorry, dennis, To keep interrupting, but very little evidence that they are, in fact, no evidence. 0k, 0k. But Theres Plenty of word that they are. Sometimes its hard To figure out where the addresses are. But so much of politics is about perception. So im just walking your neighbourhood, chatting with voters Today. Im a supporter. On the economy in particular, even nebraskas democrats admit perceptions are hard To argue against. My own father is one of those people who was going To vote for Donald Trump, and i understand it. You know, people talk about how Gas Prices were lower when Donald Trump was president. Im a business owner. I paid less taxes. I wonder what you think about the selection of Tim Walz, a democrat with nebraskan roots. Might it make a difference for some voters, do you think . Yes, it does. People do know hes from nebraskans or from nebraska. Nebraskans support nebraskans. In a tight national race, every spare vote is worth rounding up, but the Vice President ial picks are unlikely To change the big picture. In rural america, trump has the clear advantage. John sudworth, Bbc News, nebraska. To hear more analysis on the us president ial election, you can listen To the bbc s americast podcast, on bbc sounds now. Lets return To our main sTory now and the situation in the Middle East where israel has begun a Ground Incursion inTo lebanon overnight, aimed at hezbollah targets. Like hamas, hezbollah is designated as a Terrorist Organisation by many Western Governments including the uk. Lets Take A Look back at how the situation has unfolded. It was almost a year ago following the hamas attacks on Tober-7th'>OcTober 7th that the situation in the Middle East became more unstable. Since then, israel has been at war with hamas In Gaza and that situation has also re ignited a decades old conflict between Israel And Hezbollah in lebanon. On Tober-8th'>OcTober 8th last year, hezbollah launched an attack over its southern border inTo israel, in support of hamas. Israel retaliated. Tensions have been rising since then, and two weeks ago at least 32 people were killed and thousands more injured when pagers and Walkie Talkies exploded across lebanon, with the blame placed on israel. Some of the devices were used by hezbollah members. Last friday, an israeli Air Strike In Beirut killed hezbollah s leader. Since then, the conflict has rapidly escalated. Israel started hitting targets outside the Groups Stronghold in the southern suburbs of beirut, moving closer To the city centre. Overnight, the israeli Defence Force announced that it has now begun a Ground Operation in Southern Lebanon. The Uk Government is telling all british nationals in lebanon To leave as soon as possible, chartering a flight To bring some of them home Tomorrow. Our middle East Correspondent Lucy Williamson sent this update from the israeli side of the lebanese border. Weve been Hearing Helicopters overhead for a while now, and also the sound of artillery some distance away. A little while earlier, there were a series of loud explosions that we heard here, close To the border, as israel confirmed that it had launched what its calling limited and targeted Ground Raids inTo lebanon on what it called hezbollah Terrorist Targets in the area. Its not clear at this stage what sort of scale or form those raids are taking, but we have witnessed a Build Up of troops and tanks here at the border over the last few days we saw a couple of dozen tanks by the main road here. Israels been inflicting blow after blow on hezbollah for the past couple of weeks, but any kind of Invasion'>Ground Invasion represents a new phase in this war, new risks for the israeli military, and new risks for the region, as well. That was Lucy Williamson on the israeli side of the border. Meanwhile, our Correspondent Anna Foster sent us this update from the lebanese Capital Beirut. The momentum really gathered here over the few hours leading up To the announcement that israeli troops had entered lebanon for the first time since the war in 2006 between these two sides. And its really the culmination of what has been a very fast moving israeli operation over the last week or so weve seen Air Strikes here in Southern Lebanon, in the east of the country, as well where israel said it was Targeting Hezbollah s military infrastructure, its weaponry really trying To degrade the group. And also here In Beirut, as weve seen, very successfully removing and killing many of its senior members, including its leader Hassan Nasrallah. Now, we heard from the idf that that was going To be a precursor To a Ground Operation. That has happened really quite quickly just in a matter of days since it was first suggested by the idf. I think there are questions now that we will wait and see the answers To. What does a localised and targeted israeli Ground Operation in Lebanon Look like . What kind of challenges will they face . What does that mean for lebanese civilians who are still in that area . And i think, crucially, what response could it provoke both from hezbollah but also from their fellow iranian backed proxies here in the Middle East . Anna In Beirut. Something every household has To deal with but where does the plastic end up . Its something campaigners have been looking inTo, and so has our environment correspondentjonah fisher. He is here this morning To tell us all about it. What have you uncovered . Good morning. Supermarket recycling schemes have for many people become an important way for people To recycle items that you cant at home like plastic bags. Whether frozen food bags, crisp packets or Food Trays plastic packaging in the Uk Accounts for nearly 70 of our plastic waste. Although some of the harder plastics like Tons'>Milk CarTons can go in your household recycling bin, currently only 17 of local authorities collect so called Soft Plastics. These are the ones that are flexible, and they may spring back inTo shape when you scrunch them up in your hand. Thats why 4,000 supermarkets in the uk now collect these Soft Plastic items that cant be widely recycled at home which means anything with this symbol can be taken back To your local sTore. But where does your plastic actually end up . Its something that some Campaign Groups have been looking inTo, as ive been finding out. You see them at the front of most Supermarkets Collection points for the plastic bags, packets and films that most of us cant put in our recycling at home. The signs very clearly suggest that whats left here is going To be recycled. But is it . The Campaign Group everyday plastic decided To try and find out, and wrapped 40 Apple Airtag trackers inside bundles of clean, Soft Plastic. And then they left them at tescos and sainsbury S Recycling points and tracked where they went. More than half were lost, but 17 reached end destinations. We couldnt track all of them To The End destination, but for those that we did track, we found that 12 of them were burnt, effectively. So seven of those were turned inTo fuel pellets, which would later go on To be burnt in facilities like cement kilns. Four were sent overseas To be downcycled inTo lower value products. Three were exported for incineration, and two were incinerated in the uk, and just one was downcycled in the uk. Both sainsbury s and tescos Told us that if the Soft Plastic is in good condition, they try and recycle it. If not, it might end up being burnt for energy. Soft plastics are particularly difficult To recycle because theyre often contaminated by food, and theres a mix of different plastics in there. So before they can be processed, the plastic has To be washed and sorted. This facTory near derby takes Soft Plastic, washes it, and shreds it before turning it inTo pellets, which can be used To make more plastic products. This is a valuable material once weve cleaned it and washed it. So whats this going To be turned inTo . This will be turned inTo Refuse Sacks Bin Bags. InTo Refuse Sacks. Bin bags. Well, i like To call them Refuse Sacks you call them Bin Bags. This is what anti plastic campaigners call downcycling, because its not returning the plastic To its original use. So does that mean the circular labels on the packaging are misleading . We recognise that consumers are looking at this stuff very quickly. What theyre going To see is a circular image, the usual recycling chasing arrows, closed loop image, and that gives the impression that the plastic is going To go round and round in recycling, and can do. Unfortunately, thats not actually true. We asked the nine biggest supermarkets in the uk for details of how much Soft Plastic they collect, how much is recycled, and how much burnt. Only Co Op provided all the data we asked for. They said two thirds of what they collect is recycled, with the other third deemed un recyclable and burned for energy. The British Retail Consortium said retailers. Transparency is a big problem with this type of plastics but, by and large, most of the plastic thats collected is being taken and recycled inTo other products and packaging. But its tricky because not all of it is easily recycled at the moment. The question of what happens To our plastic bags, films and pouches isnt going away. From 2027 government wants local authorities To be collecting it from our homes. Jonah is with us now. It is fascinating. It is difficult To get your head around what you can and cannot recycle. You have some examples. B, and cannot recycle. You have some examles. . , and cannot recycle. You have some examples this and cannot recycle. You have some examples. This is l examples. A nice present. This is the Soft Plastic examples. A nice present. This is the Soft Plastic we examples. A nice present. This is the Soft Plastic we are examples. A nice present. This is the Soft Plastic we are talking the Soft Plastic we are talking about, a tiny symbol if you can see it, which is a. It about, a tiny symbol if you can see it, which is a. It, which is a. It effectively sa s it, which is a. It effectively says take it, which is a. It effectively says take back it, which is a. It effectively says take back To it, which is a. It effectively says take back To the it, which is a. It effectively says take back To the supermarket To be recycled and that is the sign which some of these campaigners are upset about because they say it suggests it is more environmentally friendly than it is with some of the labelling. But we did go To all the supermarkets, having talked To the campaigners, and said To them, look, tell us what you are doing with your Soft Plastic, how much are you getting, how much is being recycled, how much of it ends up being burned for energy . To be frank we didnt get many answers. We had a lot of statements coming back saying we do recycle, Marks Spencer say they recycle, Marks Spencer say they recycle everything they Took in but wouldnt tell us how much they got. Some supermarkets, algae, morrisons, asda, they didnt give their figures or didnt say they collected them. Lidl are doing a trial, 85 recycled they say. We have a pretty good idea of what happens To our recycling at home, 44 of our Household Waste is recycled. In terms of Soft Plastic, it is a bit of a Black Hole because the supermarkets have the data, the government doesnt collect it and, as we saw from what the campaigners did, snapshot, quite a limited scale, some of them are certainly being burnt, some are being recycled inTo products which are less useful, black plastic bags or benches. What we can say with some clarity is it is not a circular loop. That is To say that this sort of bike, when it is recycled, will not come back as another bike like this. It will be at best a black Bin Bag when a bag like this it will not come back as another bag. I5 bag like this it will not come back as another bag. I have been speaking To a lot of people in the industry and they say absolutely yes, this is the start of a process. We have only really been doing Soft Plastics since 2021. A lot of the structure is still being put in place in the uk. There are not many places that can handle this. In a sense the supermarkets started this with this Collection Point and then it will probably get bigger as in 2027 we moved To every home, every local authority is supposed To collect this from the kerb side. They will have a lot more capacity and hopefully we will see much higher recycling rates in terms of where it all goes. We recycling rates in terms of where it all noes. ~. ,. ,. , all goes. People have been staying in lebanon outside hezbollahs support base, hezbollah was dragged in this country inTo a conflict that was not in the countrys interest. This is exactly what we are seeing. Many fear this could be the beginning of a wider Israeli Campaign against hezbollah. We have seen Air Strikes continuing. Beirut was again targeted. Dehaiah in the suburbs of the capital. This is a country already under a lot of pressure. These intents israeli Air Strikes have killed more than 1000 people over the last few weeks. A million people have been displaced from their homes. A lot of pressure on hospitals and shelters as well. There is obviously concern about the possibility of a hezbollah response. They have been weakened but remained defiant and they say they will resist any israeli Invasion. Thank ou. We canjoin our middle East Correspondent Yolande Knell injerusalem. An Accounting System used by Post Office Sub postmasters before the controversial Horizon Software was introduced is also likely To have been faulty thats according To the findings of a new investigation. More than 70 people are seeking legal advice after unexplained losses relating To the use of the Capture Software. Our correspondent Tim Muffett reports. Hoping for answers and clarity. Mark, his Sister Claire and their mum, agnes, have come To meet the Post Office minister. They and other families believe that Post Office Accounting software, called capture, used before horizon during the 1990s, was faulty and led To their Dad And Husband peter a subpostmaster in bolTon being wrongly accused of theft. Back in 1994 when it happened, it completely devastated his life from that point on for the next 28 years until he died a couple of years ago. Your experiences predate the Horizon Scandal. Earlier this year, the previous government ordered an independent investigation inTo questions surrounding Capture Software. That report has now been published. Its found there was a reasonable likelihood that capture could have created shortfalls in accounts, and that the burden placed on subpostmasters To implement fixes, which varied in complexity, meant there was a high capacity for errors To go unnoticed. I think its profoundly concerning what ive read, and certainly the experience of listening To some of the subpostmasters and their families about what they went through using the Capture Software and how they were treated by the Post Office, it was profoundly disturbing Too, To listen To. And weve got a big job of work To do now To go through the. To think through the implications. What commitment can you give To those caught up in this that this Wont Drag on this wont take years and years . Because some of them are quite elderly. Some of them will have seen how long the Horizon Scandal has gone on. What commitment can you give . I am determined with colleagues in government To act quickly. Were determined To set out what were going To do next on this by december. In a statement, a Post Office spokesperson said. What did you think of the. Of your meeting with the minister . Um, it was emotional. It was, um, very good To finally hear that they acknowledged the problem with capture. My dad, your Role Model in life. To be. To go from the the person he was To. Yeah. He lost all. You know, he was a shell of his former self. Even having the news on, if the Post Office was mentioned, the spiral of depression that ensued, all the internal anger and the turmoil that you could see physically going through, um, was tangible. As the public inquiry inTo faulty Horizon Software reaches its final stage, another chapter, it seems, in the sTory of the Post Office scandal. From Today, thousands of homes and businesses will take part in a new trial which will see cusTomers pay less for their water in winter, and more over the summer months. The pilot by south West Water is being backed by the regulaTor, but opposed by others. Our correspondent Joe Inwood is in devon for us this morning. Its it s a but not everybody is happy with this arrangement. I5 with this arrangement. I3 certainly not. An utterly glorious day here. There is talky and there is brixham and this is Torbay, one of the parts of the south west which from Today is part of a new scheme which is quite possibly consequential and said controversial. What will happen is 3500 homes and businesses in this region will pay much less for their water in the winter but much more in the summer. It is part of efforts by south West Water To change the way people use this vital resource but as you can imagine for a part of The World, especially on a day like this, which makes its money from people coming and visited mostly in the summer, it has not gone down well with everyone. After a washed out week, it s easy To forget that the uk faces a Water Crisis especially in places like the south west. So, across the region including here in Torquay they re trying something different and controversial. Theresa is one of 500 business owners who recently found out they were being moved To a new and experimental type of water bill. From Today, they pay much less in the winter, but much more in the summer. It shouldn t be allowed for them To say, you have got To do this, you have got To pay these more expensive prices. Everyone else is not paying them, but the people that are having To do the trial have now got To try and find more money. It s a particular problem if your business is hospitality you can t exactly delay doing the dishes until winter. So how exactly will the new tariffs work . Well, one sees the price of water halve in the winter, but double in the summer. The other reduces the base price, but raises it once you use a certain amount. But it s notjust businesses who are on the trial around 3,000 households have also been Told that their bills are changing. Cor, it s an amazing view, isn t it . Yes, it s beautiful. We re very lucky. Now, sheila is not pleading poverty but, like many around here, she s angry notjust with the way the trial has been done, but with south West Water in general. Over there, we can see the Town that is one of the reasons that people maybe feel so hostile To south West Water. That s brixham, isn t it, where there was this outbreak of crypTosporidium. We re paying for all the mistakes that south West Water have made. They ve not invested in the infrastructure and sorting out the pipes. We ve got so many burst pipes around. That s all costing a lot of money, which eventually is going To Come On our shoulders. Now, it s fair To say that water companies are not the most popular at the moment controversies about the release of sewage, executive pay and dividends, plus plans To raise bills have seen them face a public backlash. But they say there are long term problems that need To be dealt with. Now, like many parts of the uk, the southwest does have an issue with water security, and the company here said they ve got To do something. And this trial is actually supported notjust by the regulaTor, ofwat, but also by the organisation that looks after the interests of consumers. I think it s a long time since we ve looked at how we pay for water, so these trials are essential To inform that debate. Can you understand why people are upset with the water companies, though . It s certainly understandable that people are, um, put onTo a trial and that they don t feel they have any choice around that. But, actually, i think if they have a look at the information, most of those people will find that this could actually save them money. Now, one of the things that s been controversial is the fact the trial s compulsory, and they say that s important To make it representative. But, as we found out when we turned up for our last interview, south West Water may have taken some of the criticism on board. In a bit of a development, since we arranged To speak To you in fact, in the last couple of hours what s happened . This afternoon i had a Call Right out of the blue about two hours ago from south West Water, and theyve decided To take me off the trial now. I mean, they have listened they ve listened To your concerns and surely that s To their credit. Yes, i give them that. Yes, perhaps, yes. South West Water are in a unique position that they operate as a sort of entity unTo themselves, and they become Judge And Jury in these things. Theyre only responsible To ofwat. As for south West Water, they say. Now this all matters because the purpose of trials like this is To see what works, and what can be applied elsewhere. The results from here in the southwest could one day be affecting your water bill. Joe inwood, Bbc News, Torquay. Now, one of the people he was particularly upset about this whole scheme is susie, the local chair of the chamber of commerce. Why have you got such issues with the idea of something which surely is just trying To get people To use water more responsibly . I trying To get people To use water more responsibly . Israel started hitting targets outside the group s stronghold in the southern suburbs of beirut, moving closer To the city centre. Overnight, the israeli Defence Force announced that it has now begun a Ground Operation in Southern Lebanon. The Uk Government is telling all british nationals in lebanon To leave as soon as possible, chartering a flight To bring some of them home Tomorrow. Lord Richard Dannatt is the former head of the british army and joins us now. Thank you very much for your time. What do you make of these developments overnight, this Ground Incursion inTo lebanon . This has been incursion inTo lebanon . 13mg. Morning. This has been signalled for quite some time by israel that it would make an incursion inTo the south, the international community begging them not To do it. With the Success Israel feels it has had, with the killing of nasrallah of the weekend and the significant Air Strike, they now feel sufficiently confident To move, i believe, in a limited way and that is what they are saying. In a limited way inTo Southern Lebanon with the objective of creating a better Security Environment in northern israel To allow some 60,000 israelis who have been displaced from their homes for the better part of the year To be able To move back. That is what they say their objective is, but whether they can achieve that without getting drawn inTo a much wider, longer deeper Ground Conflict remains To be seen. Two or three things are relevant here. One is what is the attitude of iran . We know they are the sponsor, close Ally And Supporter of hezbollah as it is of hamas and the lord Richard Dannatt. To get iran To encourage hezbollah not To over react. As far as the israelis are concerned they have experience in the 1980s of a long drawn out Ground Campaign in lebanon and also experience more recently in 2006 when they allowed themselves To get more drawn in. I think they will have taken note of that and their stated aim, To make this a limited objective, is really what we want To try To achieve. You could almost say that netanyahu s success here is whether he is able To move the 60,000 israeli citizens back inTo their homes in northern israel. The us, the their homes in northern israel. The us, the uk, their homes in northern israel. The us, the uk, ail their homes in northern israel. The us, the uk, all still talking about a possible diplomatic resolution To this. Let s assume that hezbollah, perhaps under a pressure, does not oppose unduly, they will oppose it To a degree for honour, if they don t oppose the israeli incursion inTo Southern Lebanon and the israeli citizens do have the chance of going back To their homes, i think that is the moment where international pressure could come To bear on israel and some form of negotiated settlement at least with has Follow Webb in lebanon could perhaps be arrived at. From his perspective, he will try To do everything he can To appear To be doing the right thing by the israeli people. That is the overriding motivation he will have. Against that background he will be under a lot of pressure from the international community To come To some sort of Ceasefire And Agreement as soon as possible. This morning we have some Rain In the forecast and unfortunately it will be falling if it isn t already on areas that already have issues with flooding and saturated ground. Some of us having a drier day than yesterday but you can see where we have the rain it has moved further west than we thought it would come inTo wales, and it is slowly sinking southwards. It will continue To do so, rotating around an area of low pressure wherever you see the greens and yellows, telling you where the heaviest bursts are likely To be. North of that, some fog around the Moray Firth, but a lot of dry weather, some sunshine across a lot of scotland and also Northern Ireland. What you can see The Cloud wrapped around the area of low pressure, extending across a large chunk of england and wales, with the rain are slowly pushing southwards and eastwards, eventually getting out of wales and pushing inTo the South East but it will be windy along the North Sea coastline, particularly east anglia. InTo this evening and overnight, still a lot of cloud around, still some showery outbreaks of rain, still a brisk wind, but move north, under Clear Skies, it will be a cold night and in some sheltered glens temperatures could dip a way To freezing, so we could dip a way To freezing, so we could well see Touch-of-frost'>A Touch Of Frost locally. Tomorrow, a cloudy start for england and wales. The cloud will break up through the course of the day, we will see a bit more Sunshine Developing but still some showers in the far South Eastern corner. High pressure starting To exert its influence so a lot more settled weather around, a lot more in drier conditions with some sunshine. Temperatures 12 To 16 degrees. Thursday is not looking Too bad, either. Good news, thanks, carol. Thanks. When you turned on the tv this morning, or boiled your kettle for a cup of tea, it s likely all of the electricity you used came from the national grid. This place is a of critical national infrastructure because, as you say, it runs the entire Electricity System for the uk. Let s take a quick look at what they get up To in here. The board you see in front of me, all the desks here are like the men and women controlling the system, but the board in front of us shows britain tilted on its side, scotland To the left, the south of england To the right, and the coloured lines you see either network of wires knit Together at the Energy System, the Electricity System of the uk, and it is the job of this place To balance supply and demand, calling on different Power Stations To start operating To make sure there is enough electricity To make your Toast and put on your kettle in the morning. If we look slightly To the right here, and we will zoom in a little, there is an interesting map of britain which shows the interconnect is, the big wires that connect us To our neighbours in europe, and at the moment the arrows show we are importing, most of them are importing electricity, there is are importing electricity, there is a bit of export. That shows the big flows of electricity around the country. I want To bring your attention To the box below, the chart below, which tells us how much generation is a low carbon, so renewable on the grid. As you can see, the whole of scotland is 100 renewables. Bit more patchy across the rest of the country, but the Total, 58. Oh, a change, 58. 2 of the power in the country is coming from renewables which is really impressive when you think how quickly the uk has moved away from fossil fuels. Just overnight, the last coal fired Power Station came off line and that is part of the process which explains why the government has decided To bring this place, the national Energy Systems operaTor, inTo public ownership. It was an initiative of the conservative government who are adamant it was not privatisation. I am joined by the Chief Executive of the new national Energy Systems operaTor. Here, the Foreign Office has said the situation is volatile and it has chartered a commercial flight To leave Tomorrow'>Beirut Tomorrow To evacuate british nationals wanting To leave. In the last few hours, explosions and smoke have been seen close To the border between israel and lebanon, with the israeli military warning residents in the south of the Capital Beirut To leave. Military chiefs said limited, localised and targeted raids against hezbollah are being carried out something the idf says is based on precise intelligence. The israeli military seen here preparing for the Ground Offensive in a video released this morning by the israelI Defense forces, says it aims To achieve all goals of the war, including dismantling hamas, bringing the hostages home and resToring security in northern israel. But, iran backed hezbollah says it s ready and prepared, warning that the battle may be long. Explosion. After the intense israeli airstrikes of the past week, it s unclear how much Firepower Hezbollah still has. But, with the fear of wider retaliation from its other allies, including iran, the calls for de escalation grow louder. We ultimately want To see a diplomatic resolution To conflict in the Middle East that provides long Term Security for the people of israel, the people of lebanon, and the palestinian people, as well as the broader region. And we will continue To work To advance efforts along those fronts. In the uk, for the next few days, the focus will be on getting british nationals in lebanon safely out of the country with the government chartering a Tomorrow'>Flight Tomorrow To help them and their families leave. I urge them To leave because the situation on the ground is fast moving. Israelis are describing as a limited, localised incursion. The feeling in lebanon is this could mark the beginning of a wider campaign against hezbollah, their wider movement based here in lebanon, supported by iran. For almost a year there has been concern knows attacks by hezbollah on israel would drag lebanon inTo a conflict with israel that was not in the country s interest. Hezbollah is considered a Terrorist Organisation in the uk by many in the west. It is more than a militia, it is a political party with representation in parliament, a social movement was significant support in the country. It is often considered as a state within the state. It s forces still need To regroup following that wave of attacks and there has been a major breakdown in communication between all the operatives as a result of the explosion of communication devices 2 macro weeks ago. That dealt a major blow To the group and there has been a wave of paranoia as a result of those attacks. There are fears that other communication devices may have been compromised and the group may want To avoid using them. Morale has obviously been affected among hezbollah ranks given the major intelligence breaches that it has faced and the hierarchy of the group is still really unclear sTop there is no named successor and the main priority at the moment for the group is a security. Yesterday hezbollah s Deputy Leader said that the naming of a successor would be done as soon as possible and that the group s attacks, strikes against northern israel would continue as long as the war In Gaza continues. Warning that violent clashes are taking place in Southern Lebanon, he warns lebanese civilians against using vehicles To travel south across the chardy river. That weather, we hear so much about, travels east To West North of the Israel Lebanon Border. The statement from the itf s arabic spokesperson says hezbollah is using the civilian population as a shield To launch attacks in the south and they had said for people To sTop using vehicles To travel south across the Litani River. There is the scene we can show you live while we are speaking, it shows the Israel Lebanon Border right now. We have seen smoke rising at various points over the last hour also and we will keep you up To date with everything going on again in that region. Around The World and across the uk, this is Bbc News. You re watching Bbc News with me, karin giannone. Our special coverage of the situation in Southern Lebanon as israel says troops have entered lebanon for what it calls a limited and targeted Grunge Operation against hezbollah. Let s go over To Yolande Knell injerusalem and also waiting To talk To us as Hugo Bachega and the lebanese capital, beirut. Yolande, give us a sense of what israel says it is happening as a result of this decision To go in . A girl perhaps aware of all the international misgivings about possible Mission Creep the israeli statement is a limited, targeted, localised operation by Ground Forces. Footage has been released showing what is the Exit Briefing of soldiers as they prepare To head inTo Southern Lebanon. This includes this group of paratroopers and elite commandos. Soldiers who have basically taken part in some of the most intense fighting that has gone on during the gaza war. Israel has said it will continue To strike against hezbollah until it is safe for residents of its border Towns in the north To go back To their homes. Around 60,000 people have been displaced and it has been well known for a long time that hezbollah has channelled such due To launch 7th of Tober-style'>OcTober Style attack. We know there are bunkers and infrastructure, israel says it plans To destroy that, the latest warning coming through telling citizens of Southern Lebanon once again To leave. On the israeli side there has been a lot of support for action against hezbollah but people are very well aware that this is a dangerous new phase in the fighting. As well as feeling emboldened, it believes it has had a lot of military successes against hezbollah in the last couple of weeks which has greatly diminished capabilities but that could well be seasoned hezbollah fighters waiting for troops on the other side of the border, and they know that terrain. Studio thank you, please stay with us. Hugo, in bay ridge, give us a sense of what impact the Announcement And Action of the last few hours is having where you are already hugo, In Beirut. Few hours is having where you are already hugo, In Beirut. Already hugo, In Beirut. There was the sense already hugo, In Beirut. There was the sense that already hugo, In Beirut. There was the sense that this already hugo, In Beirut. There was the sense that this grant i was the sense that this Grant Operation by the israeli military was almost inevitable, signs coming from the israeli authorities indicated that this campaign against hezbollah will not help juiced up with the killing of the Hezbollah Leader Hassan Nasrallah so the feeling in lebanon as we could see the beginning of a wider Israeli Offensive against hezbollah. Is yolande said, the israeli literary is describing what is happening now is describing what is happening now is a targeted, limited operation in Southern Lebanon. We still dont know the extent of this incursion, we dont have a clear picture of what is happening but this is an area of lebanon where hezbollah fighters are operating, hezbollah, its main Fighting Unit has thousands of really experienced fighters, battle hardened fighters, and hezbollah has vowed To resist any israeli Invasion. Yesterday we heard from the Groups Number two who gave a defiant speech, saying the fighters were ready To confront any israeli aggression. Hezbollah has been weakened after this campaign by the israeli military of intense Air Strikes and targeted assassinations, killing high profile members of the group. The entire leadership of hezbollah has been decimated by these Air Strikes but we still do not know whether the group has the capacity To coordinate a significant response. They have been weakened but not defeated. It is believed they still had sophisticated weapons including the cells that can strike deep inside israel. So the fear here again as this could be the beginning of a wider campaign sophisticated weapons including missiles that can strike deep inside israel. The country is under pressure about what is happening on the ground with an estimated i million displaced residents, the authorities one hospitals are under pressure due To the sheer number of casualties from these israeli Air Strikes. Very difficult for lebanon right now. Youll, i guess this is the Moment Israel finds out the true impact of what the last couple of weeks has had on hezbollah. So there is a mixture of intelligence and speculation, To a certain extent, how much of hezbollah s infrastructure has been left given the attacks of recent days . Although there was interestingly the attacks of recent days . Although there was interestingly a the attacks of recent days . Although there was interestingly a short there was interestingly a short statement where we had one senior israeli military figure admitting there had been what he called low Signature Raids going inTo Southern Lebanon already, confirming what we have heard and reports from the us media Too. Not much information but i think over the coming days more information about the moTorboat how long the operation will take. There is a long and painful hisTory from both sides more information will come out about how long the operation will take. The Grant Operation will take. The Grant Operation in lebanon led To an occupation that lasted for 18 years on a previous occasion and people on both sides are very well aware of all of this. It has always been a veryj difficult situation for the lebanese army because hezbollah is often described as a state within a state, it is financed, armed by iran and described as having a militia that is much more powerful than the lebanese army. The authorities say that a solution for this conflict is the resolution approved in 2006, resolution 1701 that ended the war between Israel And Hezbollah and this resolution would see hezbollah fighters being pushed away from the border above the Litani River which is 30 kilometres from the border. It has never been fully implemented, but its one of the Points Israel has made over the years. On the side lebanese authorities accusing israel of breaching some points of this resolution. The lebanese government is saying the lebanese army is ready To work To implement this resolution, To push fighters away from the border with israel. It is very difficult To see how and why israel will agree with any deal now because it feels this campaign against hezbollah so far has been extremely successful. Israels military says it is engaged in intense fighting with hezbollah after troops crossed the border inTo Southern Lebanon overnight. IsraelI Defense forces launch what they called a limited, localised and targeted Grant Operation against hezbollah. This map shows the border, with Southern Lebanon marked in red. Hezbollah said it was targeting israeli troops with Artillery Fire at one border Town, metula, which has been declared a closed military area, meaning entry is prohibited. Lets show you the border between israel and Southern Lebanon. We have seen plumes of smoke rising for several hours. Lets turn away from that and talk To a senior Unhcr Spokesperson for the Middle East. She is based on thejordanian capital. Yes, with every day the conflict continues and the | day the conflict continues and the losses among the population is increasing and exceeding what the humanitarian agencies are trying To do on the ground. We have almost1 Million people forced To flee their homes in lebanon according To the government. Most of them have had To flee in the past week. Israeli bombings have targeted and expanded the areas they are targeting. Everywhere they are looking To see where there is a safe spot To protect themselves and their children. They flee their homes, carrying nothing, and they need everything. Shelter, water, food, mattresses, blankets and most of all they need protection. The unhcr is on the ground providing mattresses, blankets, but it is really not enough. The government has established more than 700 makeshift shelters and yet it is not enough To absorb and accommodate all these people who have fled. Many are sleeping in the open air, they are sleeping in the open air, they are sleeping on streets they think are unsafe but they still cannot move somewhere else. The news of this latest escalation this morning will for sure push more people and force more people To flee, looking for safety, but safety in lebanon has become such a rare commodity, people dont know where To run two and now we are seeing more and more lebanese and syrians heading To the board To with Top'>Syria STop heading To the border. Lebanon has the largest number of refugees per capita in The World. There is at least 1. 5 number of refugees per capita in The World. There is at least1. 5 Million syrian refugees, palestinian refugees, iraqi refugees and these people came To lebanon running away, looking for safety and now they find themselves on the run again. They are reliving this and they have fewer choices on where To go and where To be protected. I fewer choices on where To go and where To be protected. Fewer choices on where To go and where To be protected. I wonder when ou hear where To be protected. I wonder when you hear israel where To be protected. Galba seems targeted . Galba seems To be further escalation, meaning more people will be running. 60 of syrians, syrian refugees. Most of them come exhausted, traumatised. They need Health Care, food, water. My colleagues are on the syrian side of the border trying To provide all of these relief items. Even as they flee To syria the likelihood of the possibility that syria will be entangled in this conflict look higher and they had To think again where To run To. Lets hear from the Founder And Ceo of Israels Defence and Security Forum who x who explained israels objectives in this Invasion'>Ground Invasion. At least at present it is not intending To go all the way To the Litani River. It is dealing with the villagers, hezbollah has built a whole military bases inside the villagers. This presents an immediate, clear danger. We cannot win back. With his chances military bases, we ask the people To leave their homes because of the danger of a massacre we experienced on Tober-seven-last'>OcTober Seven Last year with hamas. Hezbollah has planned To do exactly the same To the citizens of the north. We need To make sure that our citizens in the north will be able To go back. Sorry To interrupt, general, we have lots of things To get through and very little time but i wanted To us, you describe the fortifications and weaponry and personnel that hezbollah still has, you estimate, in the south of lebanon, how challenging an operation is theirs for the idf and how will they have for the idf and how will they have for this . ,. ,. , for this . There are thousands of terrorists in for this . There are thousands of terrorists in south for this . There are thousands of terrorists in south lebanon, for this . There are thousands of terrorists in south lebanon, the| terrorists in south lebanon, the northern command has prepared for many months trying To get ready. Many of these commanders were targeted. It will be interesting To see how much these terrorists. It is something we might find out only when the idf were engaged and we can see how organised they are. Overall hezbollah is in a state of shock, what it has experienced in the last week and a half is unprecedented warfare and what exactly the situation is we will have To see. What does the situation look like compared To 2006 . I know you are retired but i assume you were serving at the time . Following the Toppling of the leadership, all the capabilities and severity for the situation. It will be much more organised. After really dealing for a very long time with the capabilities, i am very optimistic. Israeli forces have been fighting for 11 months In Gaza. They had been arriving. They had gained a lot of experience and are bringing these capabilities To the right against hezbollah in south lebanon. Lets speak To a former Press Officer. Thank you for talking To us. What do you think the limited targeted operation looks like . Good morninu. Targeted operation looks like . Good morning as targeted operation looks like . Good morning as your targeted operation looks like . emf. Morning. As your speakers have targeted operation looks like . ems morning. As your speakers have just morning. As your Speakers Havejust said, it is a limited targeted operation. The focus at this stage is To reach the village is adjacent To the israeli border where it is undersTood hezbollah has a sophisticated, underground Network Both Command and control centres, cachet is weapons. The highest concern from the israeli perspective, the forces would be able To infiltrate inTo israel and carry out a similar attack we saw from gaza a year ago. It is bad To prevent that. Some of these villages have a line of sight inTo the israeli communities that have been bombarded. This is a chance To reach out the terrorist cells. We bombarded. We have l heard the term being used that it out the terrorist cells. We have heard the term being used that it is a limited Ground Operation. The impact on lebanon has been significant. The last couple of weeks has seen A Million estimated people on the move. What is israel facing when it goes then . How dangerous do you think this operation is for the israeli troops crossing the border, facing what is of hezbollah . We crossing the border, facing what is of hezbollah . Of hezbollah . We shouldnt underestimate of hezbollah . We shouldnt underestimate the of hezbollah . We shouldnt underestimate the capacity| of hezbollah . We shouldnt l underestimate the capacity of hezbollah. They have lost about 500 plus fighters. I had yesterday the israeli assessment that it could be three times as many. They had Tens Of Thousands of fighters. In a sense, israel has also been preparing for this operation. Israel has been wary of the hezbollah enemy on their border and the capacity they have. I think troops will be going on well prepared and understanding the nature of it. The keyissue, understanding the nature of it. The key issue, part of the Conversation Israel has been having with the americans, they understand the nature of the threat and they endorse for a degree the limited operation. The key will be limited and there will be an Exit Strategy afterwards, so as not To get bogged down and go back that the Too long. This will notjust drag on and eventually become a wider and wider war. ,. ,. War. That is the concern. The israeli government, war. That is the concern. The israeli government, the war. That is the concern. The i israeli government, the Security Cabinet has laid out its provisions. The target is very focused and is not about the able destruction of hezbollah and it is about providing a valuable Safety Net To be able To return home. This idea as i mentioned these villages could have the closest proximity To the israeli communities and will be cleared of any terrorist infrastructure that has built up and allow the residents To return home. That is a very targeted and limited objective for this campaign. I targeted and limited obective for this campaigmh this campaign. I know that previously this campaign. I know that previously you this campaign. I know that previously you are this campaign. I know that previously you are the this campaign. I know that l previously you are the prime ministers Press Officer for israels prime minister. I know you will have been aware of what has been happening. Every Saturday Night in Tel Aviv we have seen thousands protesting against Benjamin Netanyahu and his handling of the war. How do you think that perception is now with its latest phase of operation is now turning To the north, To hezbollah . My phase of operation is now turning To the north, To hezbollah . The north, To hezbollah . My role in the north, To hezbollah . My role in the government the north, To hezbollah . My role in the government was the north, To hezbollah . My role in the government was many the north, To hezbollah . My role in the government was many years i the north, To hezbollah . My role in l the government was many years ago. The israeli public is deeply divided. In Tel Aviv on a Saturday Night there are campaigns To bring down the government and release the hostages. A huge consensual issue within israel that 100 people are still being held In Gaza. The government is able To gain dividends from success of the last couple of weeks in terms of the military audacious operations that have led To the targeting of so many Hezbollah Leadership. There is a dividend there for the israeli public To appreciate. Like any government, if you take credit for vicTories, you also need To take responsibility for their failure. VicTories, you also need To take responsibility for theirfailure. A lot of the israeli public are waiting for an official inquiry To investigate the events of last year. What we have seen over the last two weeks is in a sense a rehabilitation of the image of both the government and the military that the israeli public will work on the mythology of the successes of the idf. In the last two weeks, particularly the targeting of Hassan Nasrallah, game changing event in the region. Sony bringing some success for both the government and the view in which the israeli military leadership is viewed by the public as well. Israel Hasnt Aot viewed by the public as well. Israel hasnt got its viewed by the public as well. Israel hasnt got its hostages viewed by the public as well. Israel hasnt got its hostages back. Israel is still being attacked from many directions. After all the deaths of the last year, since the appalling atrocities of ocTober the 7th, do the israelis feel any safer . That is the israelis feel any safer . That is the sense of the israelis feel any safer . That is the sense of safety. The israelis feel any safer . That is the sense of safety. There the israelis feel any safer . That is the sense of safety. There is i the sense of safety. There is physical Safety And Perception of security as well. We have seen some people in the south returning To the villages in the south. Not all but some of them are returning. There is still the sense this operation is not necessary and only then, the political solution To this is kind of the israeli perspective, quite clear. It is about the comprehensive implementation of the un resolution 1701, already 18 years of command about the international community To bring To bear, To bring some accountability on the lebanese side To give is ready is notjust a military vicTory but also in the political sense To allow the civilians To return To their homes and for the lebanese To be able To return To their homes and they deserve To be unshackled by the pressure of hezbollah. The hope is, this is a big hope and optimistic that the lebanese people also will be able To regain their sovereignty and rid themselves of this menacing threat of hezbollah, which is so damaging for everyone. Thank you so much for speaking To us, the former Press Officer of a former israeli prime minister. I appreciate your time. Around The World and across the uk, this is Bbc News. You are watching special coverage of the breaking news of the last few hours that israel has entered lebanon with ground troops on what the israeli military cold is a limited, localised and targeted Grunge Operation against hezbollah. With what the israeli military has called a limited, localised and targeted Ground Operation. The action has been Towards the border with israel, Southern Lebanon, northern israel, we have been watching plumes of smoke rising over the past few hours. Lets bring you the past few hours. Lets bring you the latest from the lebanese prime ministers office. He urges the united nations and donors To provide aid To displaced people. We know there are an estimated 1 Million lebanese and syrian refugees around the country on the move. Another line from the caretaker prime minister najib mikati, he said his country faces one of the most dangerous phases of its hisTory, urging the united nations To provide To age, as i said, for1 Million people displaced by the israeli Air Strikes and now that operation going in on the ground inTo Southern Lebanon. I am joined in on the ground inTo Southern Lebanon. Iamjoined by in on the ground inTo Southern Lebanon. I am joined by a former lebanese ambassador To jordan between 2017 and 2020. She said there is a sense of Fear But Lebanon has experienced Invasion before. We have has experienced Invasion before. 7 have previously experienced israeli incursion which have turned inTo occupation, previously occupying the south of lebanon from 83 To 2000 so there is a lot of trauma birth. This is a limited incursion and we hope this will remain as that. Otherwise it will be a war with lebanon, which has said all along it does not want a war with israel and the solution has To be diplomatic and will come from the implementation of a un resolution 1701 which requires for the army To be positioned on the southern border To secure the peace of the border. It is not up To the israelis To create a Buffer Zone, it is up To the lebanese on their border. , is up To the lebanese on their border. ,. , ~. , is up To the lebanese on their border. ,. ,. , border. In the last few minutes before we came on air i have heard the lebanese government is saying it is ready To fully implement that un resolution that had aim To end hezbollahs presents south of the river in Southern Lebanon. They have been the first due To fly To defy that resolution, with their Ad Force flying constantly over lebanon for the last two decades. The lebanese government was concerned, i think they have international backing To do this. They have been supporting the lebanese army in terms of reinforcing capabilities in order To do this but we need To be given a chance To do this.
