The Berkeley Police Department has arrested a man suspected of vandalism at Berkeley Hillel, Congregation Beth El and the home of the UC Berkeley Chabad rabbi, all done within 24 hours on April 29-30. David William Dakota Denton, 39, of no address, was arrested May 2 and charged with burglary, vandalism and destroying property “for the purpose of intimidating/interfering with the free exercise of any right/privilege secured to the person by the Constitution,” which is considered a hate crime. Police believe Denton is the man who broke into Berkeley Hillel in the early hours of April 30. Director Rabbi Adam Naftalin-Kelman said security cameras showed a man spending “several hours in the building.”
