In terms of the Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013 (“POPIA“), all organisations who process personal information need to adopt measures to ensure the protection of personal information. One of these measures is ensuring that there is an individual who is endowed with the responsibility of protecting information within an organisation and held accountable for the use/misuse of the data they hold. Such a person is referred to as the Information Officer. A notice has been issued by the Information Regulator stipulating that regulation 4, which deals with the appointment of the Information Officer, will be effective on 1 May 2021.
