BLOOMBERG Bloomberg Markets Americas September 25, 2017

All that in the next 60 minutes. Julie hyman is here. Julie we were on the air when they got those headlines from north korea, that the foreign minister from north korea said President Trumps comments over the weekend about to a declaration of war. Stocks have taken a leg down and have done really recovered. This is slightly unusual because most of the rhetoric coming up over the past two months has not seen a reaction from stocks, however, the word war has not really been bandied about. We have seen the nasdaq in particular taking a hit, down 1 . It had already been the worst performing of the three major averages. In terms of other assets, are we seeing investors be riskaverse . Yes, indeed. U. S. Treasurys going down by three basis points. Gold catching up a bit, up half a percent. The dollar euro are lower against the japanese yen. Vix still below 11 at this stage. Elsewhere, we are looking at the continuing fallout from the echo equifax hack. And analyst has said that this progress and motivate customers to switch back to cards. Seeingoned that we are the tech group into the worst today, the nasdaq. Apple is a part of that story. The commentary on the initial sales of the iphone eight, even though apple has not released the numbers. Perhaps some weaker demand. That is down and many of the suppliers are taking a hit today. Vonnie thank you. Shery turning to an important subject we have covered closely on bloomberg, diversity in the workforce. Expertrg technology emily chang is standing by with one of the most recognizable figures in this discussion. Thank you. joining me now is ellen pao, author of a new book, cofounder of project include. So great to have you. Thanks for joining us. Its been five years since you sued kleiner perkins, two years since you lost. A few days since you are out with this new book. You writes, why did this, why rehash the details, what is your goal . Was havingrt of it so many men and women tell me how much my story had inspired them, gave them comfort in the experiences they had, how they had connected with it. I wanted to give them all of the facts, the whole story, see if i could help other people through the writing of this book. Give ane, to also inspiring ending to what was a pretty terrible experience, that you can get through all of this and continue and have a career and move forward, and also try to change tech and the business world. Emily i know you said you have not regretted it, but its been an emotional process. Where are you now . The kapor center, i am the chief Diversity Inclusion officer. I also do some work at their Venture Capital fund. Its been great to work with ceos and founders on bringing diversity and inclusion into their companies. We have a founders commitment, where founders we invest in have a formal commitment to diversity and inclusion for their teams and cultures. It has also been great to continue to do work with the seven cofounders of project include. We started this nonprofit to push diversity in tech and inclusion. Been working with ceos, gathering data to try to move the issue forward. , that you wrote an oped although all has not changed, the one that has is acknowledging the problem of sexism in the industry. If you filed your seat today, do you think the outcome would be different . I dont know if we would be here if i had not filed suit, so its hard to say. We have change the conversation. No longer are women forced to defend themselves. Its a much easier experience for people to say ive been harassed, discriminated against. People believe it. It hadnt been for all of these women coming forward after me, where we would be today. But i think somebody soon now has a better shot. A rash ofhave seen Sexual Harassment stories in , hasre capital, uber, sofi any of the surprised you . I think most people who are familiar with the highest levels of tech and Venture Capital have heard the stories. Whats been surprising is that so many people now are coming forward to talk about them. It started with a bunch of women who came forward in the last few susan seller coming out with such detailed and specific blog posts. And her being accepted, not being taken down, its open the door for people to come forward and change the conversation. Emily susan fowler catalyzed the investigation into uber, Travis Kalanick resigned. What do you think once a wrong at uber . I dont know the details, but what happens in companies, you get this culture, you want to be harddriving, you want to push and break all the rules. That ends up not being limited to the business side, it ends up going into the personal side, your interactions with employees , your peers, people who report to you. You think the rules do not apply, and you do what you want. That ends up breaking down into illegal areas. Emily what responsibilities do 4 i dont know what it is letting the bro culture run wild . I think they have a huge responsibility for leading Venture Capitalists run wild. Have theroblem is, you fox guarding the hen house, you have people who are who do not have clean hands who are trying to manage people and tell them, youre not supposed to do these things, when they are doing them themselves. As a board member, you have a huge responsibility to the employees of a company, shareholders, to make sure the within theoperating bounds of the law, building a culture that will help them be is diverse and that and inclusive, because we know that generates better products. You go into incredibly fine detail into the boys environment that you experienced at kleiner perkins, not just sexist jokes but racist jokes as well. If the culture is that broken, can it be fixed . I dont know if the bigger companies, the older funds can actually be fixed, but working through project include, the there are a lot of founders and ceos committed to diversity and inclusion and want to build teams that include everyone, that are tied to the community, tied to their customer, that are going to build the best products. I have a lot of hope because i think the next generation of companies that are successful will have this commitment to diversity and inclusion, and will be inclusive across all of their activities. I dont know about these funds that have been around for a while, talking about lowering the bar, finding that next white, male nerd. How do you change that attitude . Emily you are referencing a comment that mark morris me to me a couple years ago a couple years ago. Sequoia, apitals like one partner, and recent horowitz, no women partners. Do you think these firms will be surpassed if they still have the best returns, reputation . I know a lot of women and people of color who will not meet with them, because they dont think they will be treated fairly. Language,k at the lowering the bar to bring in people from different groups they dont think that women or other groups are actually equal to the men they typically invest in. How do you let somebody like that invest in you and inspect expect to get the same outcomes as other people they are investing in, or as you would get with a different investor who believes you are capable, likely to succeed as others . Emily ellen pao, author of reset. Thank you for joining us. Back to you in new york. Shery thank you, emily chang, with ellen pao. Vonnie lets check in on the first word news. Emma chandra has more. Shery coming up, move aside obamacare. Repeal and tax reform is now the. Op issue for the gop what to look for this week in politics. This is bloomberg. Shery this is Bloomberg Markets. Im shery ahn. Vonnie im vonnie quinn. A busy week ahead for washington. President trump and Republican Leaders plan to release the tax framework. Meanwhile, republicans are still pushing a last ditch to topple the Affordable Care act. Sahil kapur is with us from capitol hill. First, when do we get final figures on the tax, actual, workable bill that can be shopped around . Sahil we expect to get something wednesday. It will reflect what Republican Leaders in the house and senate have agreed upon. I would not expect a detailed proposal, no legislative language. This will be a big framework which will form starting point for committees in the house and senate to start crafting their own bills. They will likely go their own ways on some items. We will look at probably individual rate cuts, new top rate of 35 instead of 39. 6 , passthrough rate of 25 , and a new Corporate Tax rate they are aiming for, about 20 . These are all a tall order put together. Very difficult to raise this kind of money to make these permanent. Shery will this be enough to satisfy the House Freedom caucus and move forward with the budget . Sahil that is one of the main reasons they are putting out the framework. The House Freedom caucus, a group of about three dozen conservatives in the house, they are demanding to see some details before they agree to greenlight a budget resolution that will unlock the procedure to begin this tax legislation. Watch. Ll be critical to i dont know if there will be in details to satisfy them. I think we will probably find that wednesday. Of holdouts, ing lets talk about rand paul, and whether there is a way for him to support the Health Care Bill. He says potentially if the amount of money was brought down by half, there might the. Should he be one of the holdouts that could be won over . For a he has been a note while. I dont see how he could be won over. His demand to cut the size of the block grant and have is the sort of thing that will send moderate Senate Republicans fleeing. You will not win Lisa Murkowski or rob portman if you cut the federal funding in half. Their states rely on things like medicaid. Ohio, west virginia, you have a big Opioid Epidemic problem. The senators won allow federal funding to try up on that. Revival ofd we see a bipartisan efforts by gop senator Lamar Alexander and patty murray . Sahil they were negotiating before the bill came up, the reemergence of the bill has scuttled those efforts. Democrats are saying come back to the table. There are a number of republicans that want to move on from the repeal and replace effort. They want to begin bipartisan talks. Certainly plausible, but the question is when. Politics inside the Republican Party are pretty lethal about doing anything that preserves aca. Vonnie sahil kapur, back in action this week. Coming up, how Newmont Mining plans to protect shareholders in a falling market. This is bloomberg. Vonnie this is Bloomberg Markets. Im vonnie quinn. Shery im shery ahn. Gathered today in colorado to discuss industry challenges amid growing pressure on the spot rise of the precious metal. Danielle bochove is standing by with the ceo of the worlds secondlargest producer. Thanks very much. Gary goldberg joining me now, ceo of Newmont Mining. When we spoke in july, you are considering hiking your dividend. You said it would be to attract etf investors toward your stock and maybe delinking from the price of gold. Is that still on the table . Great to be here. We are still assessing it. We are going through our budget process for 2018. As we go through that, we are look what projects we have in our pipeline. He done a great job getting our debt paydown. We dont have any major payments coming up for a while. It will be in december that we will come up with our guidance for 2018. With that, we would provide an update on our dividend policy. We are looking at the options. Is tole if the purpose lower investors away from etfs, does that suggest you are more willing to protect the dividends, even as prices are falling . Today, we are paying about 18 dividend yield. When we look at what our potential is to increase that, attract other investors, today, if you own an etf, you can zero dividend. Right now we should be attractive, so reaching out to those investors and others you might like not only a good quality gold company, but one that can pay a consistent dividend. Danielle Western Australia announced that it would hike the gold is aboutf 1200 an ounce, a 50 increase in the royalty. You are a major player in Western Australia, what does this mean for you . Process withthe our team on the ground in australia, talking to the labor government that has proposed a change, despite the fact that they promise not to change it. They have suggested a change. We want to followup with them and make sure they understand the impacts. When you look at the Western Australian industry, there is only one operation longer than a 10year mine life, and that is us. Getting the facts across is really what we are focused on. In terms of the impact on newmont, we have run the numbers. A 15 it would be about million impact on our operating cost. 20 an ounce for those operations, so not insignificant. We want to make sure people understand the facts clearly before they make these decisions. Danielle you own one with barrick, and boddington. Is the royalty move end up where it would affect your decisions in Western Australia . We would have to look at where we invest around the world. Danielle i was talking to , in past years, you have made no secret of the fact that you want to buy barricks state. Does that still hold given the royalty news . We are still interested if it can be done at the right value. Potential future for the asset there. We would like to have the other half, if it can be done at the right value. Danielle is the value changed by the royalty agreement . It does affect the value. Danielle that doesnt sound like you are getting any closer together. You have a different idea of what this acid is worth. Im not sure where they stand in the process today but i remain in this interested if it can be done at the right value. Anielle you also have location at turquoise ridge. Have there been any talks about the companies doing a quid pro quo . Would sell your stake in turquoise ridge to them as part of a deal that would involve category. Gets processedil at our twin creeks operation, so we own 100 of between creeks operation. 75 25 at turquoise ridge. How we carry it forward, the deal expires at the end of the year to process ore. That is something that we are in talks with to extend. Danielle are the talks merged . I think they are separate from what is going on at turquoise ridge. Danielle are they worth more than a billion dollars . Ofi think we have our view the alley and the rest of the market will see where it goes. Danielle you have a robust pipeline of highmargin projects, do you have enough cash flow to fund them all . We have continued to invest over time, over the downturn, continue to invest in products below the expected cost, so thats been a good thing. We are in a strong position to fund all of our project pipelines from our operating cash flows. Danielle gary goldberg, thank you. Shery thank you, danielle. Dealmaking amid global uncertainty.
