BROCKTON — "Beware of the woke church" was the warning Pastor Manny Daphnis remembers from a congregant of a different church, as he recalled the beginning of the Restoration Community Action Ministry. The idea of his church being lumped in with other justice movements and bringing in people with different agendas may have bothered that churchgoer , but not Daphnis. In a city with a public school system experiencing a widening achievement gap, a homeless population hit hard by COVID and a global pandemic that has taken the lives of residents young and old, there are "agents of restoration," as Daphnis, lead pastor at Restoration Community Church, describes them, trying to make a difference.
