Signage explains the closure of an area of Tom Campbell’s Hill for planned Canada Day fireworks on Monday, June 28, 2021. There has been some calling for the cancellation of Canada Day celebrations in the wake of the discovery of hundreds of unmarked children’s graves at former residential school sites.
Canada Day fireworks will go ahead in Calgary this week despite calls from some Indigenous people to limit or cancel celebrations, Mayor Naheed Nenshi said Monday.
But the mayor said there will be a change to the “positioning” of the July 1 fireworks. He wants them to stand as a moment of reflection after First Nations in Canada recently confirmed the locations of unmarked graves at the sites of former residential schools.
