During Monday’s meeting of the Canyon Independent School District Board of Education, progress on West Plains High School, the first high school in the district in more than 30 years, continued. This time, however, that progress was not related to the building or the construction site. The progress was related to the individual leading that school, and the students within the school, prior to and after the school's opening in August 2022. Eric Gomez, currently an assistant principal at Canyon High School, was unanimously approved as the first principal of West Plains High School during Monday’s meeting. Gomez, a Dalhart native and Lubbock Christian University graduate, previously worked in Levelland ISD and Amarillo ISD.
