A priest for nearly 55 years and a cardinal since 1988, he died on Holy Saturday. Tumi served as Archbishop of Douala from 1991-2009, but it was not until several years after he had retired that he became a leading figure in efforts to resolve the Anglophone Crisis that has disrupted the Northwest and Southwest Regions of Cameroon. "I have the deep sorrow of announcing the return to Eternity of His Eminence Christian Cardinal Tumi," said Archbishop Samuel Kledahe of Douala, in announcing his predecessor's death. "Through the mercy of God may his soul rest in peace," the archbishop said on Facebook.
