Correction: This story has been edited for accuracy to better show when the incident occurred, when the Auditor's Office found out and the mayor's involvement since finding out about it. Despite most of the $1.28 million mistakenly paid to the state being returned, the error was again a topic of controversy for the Marion City Council. During Monday's council committee meeting, Deputy Auditor Marden Watts said $1.1 million has been returned to the City of Marion after it was mistakenly paid to the state instead of the IRS. Watts added that the request to get the additional $184,000 has been submitted and is awaiting to be processed, although it could take three months before it is deposited.
