By Staff Reporter Mutasa South: Civil society groups here have opposed a bid by Redwing Mine to contract Prime Royal Africa (PRA) to set up mining syndicates and exploit shallow open pits (free digging) without undertaking Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process. The groups include Centre for Research and Development (CRD) Penhalonga Residents and Ratepayers Association (PRRA), Penhalonga Youths Development Trust (PYDT) and Zivai Community Empowerment Trust (ZCET). They are up in arms Redwing Mine has a valid Environmental Management Plan (EMP) for underground mining only. “For the past 10 months, PRA open pits mining activities at Redwing has extensively damaged the environment and increased vulnerability of community to landslides, flooding and hazardous contamination of water among other environmental concerns.
