(PNA Photo Alfred Frias) MANILA - Local government units in the National Capital Region (NCR) and nearby provinces successively announced class suspension on Tuesday as the southwest monsoon brought heavy rains in Luzon. In Metro Manila, afternoon classes in public and private schools were suspended in all levels in Caloocan, Marikina, Las Pinas, Malabon, Navotas, Mandaluyong, Pasay, Paranaque, Pateros, Taguig, Muntinlupa, and Valenzuela. The suspension, as advised by Valenzuela Mayor Wes Gatchalian, Navotas City Mayor Rey Tiangco, Paranaque Mayor Edwin Olivarez, Malabon City Jeannie Sandoval, and Pateros Mayor Miguel Ponce III, took effect at noon. Meanwhile, Pasay City implemented the suspension from 1 p.m. onwards. The University of the Philippines-Diliman in Quezon City also suspended its classes. Netizens, meanwhile, flooded the comment section of Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna's Facebook post, in which she posted a prayer. "Hingi ko suspension, bakit prayer ang binigay? (I requested for a suspension, but I was granted a prayer)," joked one netizen. "May pasok po ba? lakas ng ulan, 'di ko alam kung mag-uniform ba ako o rash guard e (Do we have a class? There's heavy rain. What should I wear, uniform or rash guard?)," another replied. Others, meanwhile, expressed their serious sentiments concerning the welfare of learners. Furthermore, LGUs in Cavite, as well as several colleges and universities, announced class suspension in areas like Bacoor, Imus, Dasmarinas, Kawit, Ternate, Tanza, Noveleta, Alfonso, General Mariano Alvarez, General Trias, Silang, Magallanes, and Maragondon. Class suspensions were also declared in all levels in the entire province of Rizal. According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration, cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms are expected to persist in Metro Manila, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Bataan, and Zambales.
