Where do these negotiations stand now . I think were going to wait and see if the republican senators are willing to come up. Joe biden and his team have made it clear that fast is important to them, and big is important to them. They reiterated that after the meeting tonight. Good discussion, got to be big. Well, the republican proposed package was onethird the size of what biden has proposed. In addition to that, it left out a musthave for democrats, thats state and local government aid. This is something democrats have been demanding for months, and republicans have been resisting. The fact that it was left out of the republican proposal was an indication that this was not a serious offer intended to get a serious response from biden. Right now, its easy for biden to turn away and go through the reconciliation process. Anthony, democrats can go it alone if they stick together. And biden knows a lot of Struggling Americans support a big bill. Why wouldnt he go with what people want over bipartisan support . He may very well do that. John may be right. I guess he wants to see what the other potential outcomes are. I predict he wont do that, by the way. Maybe its my biases that the president wants to see if he can create some level of unity, don. But he certainly could do that. Bernie sanders is telling people that he has the votes, meaning the 51 votes, so he can just ram it through. But i think hes trying to create a different environment in washington right now. And hopefully the republicans will come up. If they dont, then they will likely do that, don. And Mitch Mcconnell is trying to call out that threat. Its belated, of course. The republicans have tolerated Playing Footsie with some of the elements that produced Marjorie Taylor greene for quite a long time. But Mitch Mcconnell has lost his majority, he wants to win it back. And i think its inescapable at some point, republicans have to take this on. Unless theyre going to melt down into a party of fanatics, and basically all College Educated people with normal lives are going to gravitate out of there if they dont call it out. Lets talk about that phone call, anthony, that Marjorie Taylor greene had with the president this weekend. Do you think thats why shes feeling so empowered to take on Mitch Mcconnell . Maybe. But i think shes nervous. I think thats a bombshell from Mitch Mcconnell. And i think that the real person here is kevin mccarthy. Im almost said about where kevin is in his life. Five years ago, he said we needed more thermostats not thermometers in washington. Like, people guiding people not checking temperature. If there were ever a moment to guide people, it would be to remove here. Hes wildly ambitious, he wants to be the speaker of the house more than anything. I think hes losing his principles and judgment related to this. Lets talk about how urgent the need is now. Covid hospitalizations are beginning to decline, but january was by far the deadliest month of the pandemic. Over 95,000 americans lost their lives, an increase of 20,000 over december. Think about it like this. Of the over 440,000 people who have died of the virus, about 22 of the deaths were reported in january. And with 470 cases of the new var variants in the u. S. , experts are warning that the worst of the pandemic may be yet to come. Dr. Jonathan reiner joins us. 32 Million People have been vaccinated, and the pace is picking up. But the new variants are alarming. Some warning that they could overwhelm the u. S. As early as march. Its a race against time to get vaccines into arms. It certainly is. But im really optimistic. Were seeing cases plummet in the united states. We havent seen this few people hospitalized and its still quite a bit, but we havent seen this few people hospitalized since the weekend of thanksgiving. And what were going to see now with hospitalizations dropping very quickly is were going to start to see deaths drop. Were in this important window of opportunity to get shots in the arms. And were averaging about 1. 4 million vaccinations per day. Which sounds good. But we need to do a lot better. Dont forget, some of those vaccinations are second shots. We need to maximize the number of new people that get vaccinated and there are some interesting ways to do that. But thats where all of our priorities should be, vaccinating new people right now. The task force is urging state and Public Officials not to hold on to second doses. Will that make a big difference in terms of getting the Vaccination Numbers up . Absolutely. So nationwide, weve given about 66 of the vaccines that have been distributed, from state to state. On average, about 66 . We need to give all of the vaccine that is distributed into arms as soon as that can be done. And rely on the pipeline to resupply for the second shots. I had a conversation with a Government Vaccine Scientist last week who said to me, you know, it really doesnt matter at all whether the second shot for the Pfizer Vaccine is given at four weeks, or the Moderna Vaccine is given at five or six weeks. It makes very little difference. What does make a difference is getting immunity on board. And the way to do that is to maximize the number of shots right now. States should be using all the vaccine they have to vaccinate people right now. Theres also growing evidence that people who have already had coronavirus could be reinfected by the new south african variant. If it becomes dominant, the experience of our colleagues in south africa indicate that even if you have been infected with the original virus, that there is a very high rate of reinfection to the point where previous infection does not seem to protect you against reinfection. We would stipulate that there was a riot that went on that day. The words of president trumps speech call for peacefulness. And the country needs to heal now, we need to move forward. Joining me now, doug jones of alabama, former representative, now a cnn contributor. Should they be worried about showing the videos from january 6th . Yes, thats kind of typical. I was a prosecutor, did some defense work, and you never want to have pictures of a victim. You never want to have, you know, those kinds of details that come out. You always want to argue that its too prejudicial to do that. That is the result, thats what the impeachment is all about, the result. It wasnt just the words. It was the result of the words. So i would absolutely be stomping around trying to keep it out. But i dont think hell have any success doing that. They also plan to argue that trump intentionally incited the riots over many months to subvert the will of the voters. So why is that important, and how would you hammer this point in trial . Well, i would do just that. I would try to build this. This is more, i believe, for the house managers than just simply about that one day on january 6th. This is about the speeches, the tweets, about a carefully orchestrated plan to get a lot of people in this country absolutely convinced that an election was stolen. Absolutely convinced. And then move from that to a place where they would riot on the Capitol Steps. So i think you have to have those building blocks. All of the pieces, theyre like a puzzle of any trial. You need to bring the pieces together, and they culminated with them coming together on january 6th at the mall with the speech and then marching down to the capitol. What about the people who received the brunt of this . Even beyond the lawmakers, because the lawmakers never really came into close contact with the insurrectionists. But the Police Officers who are willing to be witnesses, and some of them say that before the insurrection even happened, when they heard trumps words, from their professional training, they knew they were in trouble, that something was going to happen. What about them, will they be called as witnesses, or should they be called . I think they should be considered. Given that kind of testimony. Look, what happened at the capitol was the ultimate result of all that had happened for months. But when you have a Police Officer, someone who is defending the capitol, acting as an expert witness, talking about listening to president s words and other peoples comments, members of congress and others, knowing from their training that something bad may be in the works, i think that thats relevant. There are a lot of pieces to the puzzle, and they should at least be talked to. I think there will be a really interesting dynamic about whether they call witnesses or not. And listen, his second Impeachment Trial is coming up. His previous lawyers quit over the weekend, all of them, because he wanted them to argue his big lie, and they refused to do it. John cornyn says it would be a disservice to trumps defense to focus on his baseless election claims. But if he goes there, how will the republicans, can they defend that . I think its going to be really hard to defend if they go there. This can be, if he wants to defend on the merits, and, look, don, there are so many Defense Lawyers out there who would just say, take a knee, not put on any defense, not argue, not put on anything. This thing may be baked, we dont know. But i believe the house managers will make a compelling case for what happened on january 6th. I was watching, you know, the specials tonight. It is stunning what happened. And not all of that has been seen by the American Public. Part of this is for the American Public to understand as well. And thats a piece of any of this trial. And i want to talk about covid relief talks. President biden met with republican senators, but their plan is onethird of what the president wants. Were in a race against time. How long should the president wait for bipartisanship, because every minute counts to americans who are in need right now. I dont think he can wait too long, one way or another. I think theres a hesitancy from someone like joe biden who wants to reach across the aisle, who wants to find a compromise, a bipartisan package that they can pass. I dont think he can wait too long. Because i think the urgency is there. But i think they have to do more to connect the economy with the virus. We had this same situation last may. As the virus, everybody, you know, republicans and the president said, its going to go away in the summer. But it didnt, and things got worse. Right now, were seeing the variants. Police say she refused to get into the police car, and they tried several times before using pepper spray. Were going to show you that in just a moment. What is your reaction to seeing that girl being pepper sprayed . Horrific. Theres no justification, no one was in danger. To treat a child in this manner. People wonder why there is such a reaction to how police are funded in this situation. We need to train police and have others on the strategies of deescalation. I have a child, i have five children. And the fact that any of my children could be put at risk because you have individuals like this who are not trained, have very little regard for people, and children, this is appalling. So even though there are folks who are, i think it was one of the people who represents the officers, im not sure if it was the union or what have you, saying it was better to be pepper sprayed than be injured in some other way by a Police Officer. What do you say to that . Its a false choice. Its not about that, its about deescalating, its about being trained and having the type of individuals on the scene such as this, to talk to and deal with children. If these Police Officers are not trained to handle a child, that goes to the question, what are we training our Law Enforcement officers to do and do we have the type of support for communities and situations like this . We have to fund more social workers and fund more Mental Health experts, Fund Training for personnel to deescalate and not just ramp up. What if this was a young man, a 15yearold . That young man could have been harmed because these officers obviously have little to no regard for life or the fact that this is a child. And i want to make sure we have enough time for this next video and story. A police chief and patrolman ousted after a racist conversation from last june came to light. The patrolman was recording the conversation with his body cam, though he didnt realize it at the time. I want to warn our viewers, it is offensive. Listen. What theyre saying now is, you didnt have to shoot it. Its just a taser. How come when you tase a [ bleep ] [ bleep ] youve killed him 27 times. I dont know if this has any merit, back in slave times, but im sure that there was a lot of them i dont have no doubt about it. But for the most part, it seems to me like they furnished them a house to live in, clothes on their back, food to put on their table, all they had to do was [ bleep ] work. Not only should the officers be terminated, every case they investigated, every testimony they provided in court as it related to an africanamerican needs to be reviewed. We need to pass the George Floyd Police justice act, get rid of qualified immunity, make sure police are trained, and evaluate how were funding the time of Supportive Services communities need. Even with that language, im sure there are people who use that language and they would swear to you up and down theyre not racist. But you mentioned george floyd. Its the first day of black history month. Just a half year since the george floyd protests. What has been left undone since the cries for Police Reform and Social Justice . The reform that is necessary across the country. We need to continue to see these incidents as weve seen them over the last seven, ten, 12 years. In the africanamerican community, weve always known this existed. Now that everyone has the ability to record and video it, its coming to light to the broader public. Just all of the actions and then to see him on the Capitol Steps telling them to go down there and make your voices heard or whatever he said, it certainly incited a riot. He should have known it, and he should have stopped it. What does this say, dave, about the grip that trump still has on the gop . Well, it says that his grip is still very strong. In part because, you know, his policies are still, his policies were wonderful. They, we think, turned this country around and got it going in the right direction. And i dont think they want to turn their back on that. But the question is, at what cost, at what cost, right . Correct. And the party needs to be rid of him and move on. We are going to keep the policies. Those were our policies before he was president , they continue to be our policies of limited government, respect for the rights of the individual and the unborn. Strong Second Amendment protections. These are policies that have been part of the Republican Party for years and years, and they will continue to be so, with or without trump. I think most people understand that. Even people who are far to the left, they may not agree with your policies, but they will tell you, those are the policies the Republican Party believed in. Now it appears that, and you can tell me what you think, that the Republican Party may be making more room for people like congresswoman Marjorie Taylor greene than it is for traditional conservatives like you or for liz cheney, for goodness sake. He appeared to believe the government was not lawfully elected. This is an example of how dangerous misinformation is, warping peoples reality. Absolutely. And i thought it was interesting that the judge said, words matter, facts matter. He pointed out that griffin doesnt believe the government was lawfully elected. And he said if somebody so readily denied reality, they would be sent for a Mental Health evaluation. But the judge said, unfortunately this whole idea of Election Fraud is a prevailing idea. So really, just making the point that what trump has been pushing, what stop the steal has been pushing, has worked people into a state of absolute delusion. Yeah. One of the insurrectionists, her name is jenny cud, is a former texas mayoral candidate. Shes been granted pretrial release, and has put in an interesting request to the court. Tell us about that. Yeah. She wants to go on vacation, don. Not only that, she wants to go to mexico. While Many Americans have been unable to see family because theyre not traveling during this pandemic, she has made an application to the court to go on a prepaid holiday for three nights to a resort in mexico. Which just goes back to the surreal, you know, situation that this all is. Somebody who would go to an insurrection and storm the capitol would also be planning on going on a vacation just a few weeks after. And remember, this is supposedly all about economic anxiety. A vacation to mexico would be great for anyone in any economic bracket. Listen, there was always the real estate agent, jennifer ryan, who took a private plane, speaking of economic anxiety, to the capitol, brazenly posting pictures of herself entering the building. Those are folks with good jobs, who lived fairly privileged lives. Why did they believe they could get away with this . Yeah, obviously a huge part of this is the sense of entitlement and privilege that most of these people were white people who stormed the capitol that day. But also, i know from traveling and speaking to so many Trump Supporters throughout the year, they were so, so, so convinced that they were absolutely right. Everybody is against them, trump was cheated out of the election, that everything the media is saying, anything Election Officials are saying, that is all false. So you have a group of people who are so convinced theyre right, that they could get away with this, gthey were doing the right thing, and they could go away to mexico.
