As difficult as it can be. This caught people off guard. As a meteorologist, we were watching Hurricane Dora slide well south of the island chain. It was not a concern for us. We thought it was fish food. Literally not impacting land. The fact is that it created a phenomenon with the wins that no one else could ever seen and it caught people off guard in the middle of the night when people were sleeping. So, you can imagine just how terrifying those moments were overnight when we started to see those little flashpoints. The hotspots on Satellite Imagery that meteorologist look at, we started to see those flareup. That was a concern. We immediately started to recognize that there was a problem. Social media videos started pouring in. Then we started to learn about Communications Going down. 911 not becoming available for residents over the western side of the island of maui. Think how concerning and how terrifying those moments mustve been for people not being able to reach out for help. Well, that is what people had to endure. Thank you so much. We canceled our tourism operation. We are partnering with the state and focusing on taking care of the people that need we have authorization to use one of the airports closer so we can bring food and water and support. Helicopters do have versatility to land, you know, different locations like a golf course or smaller airports on the west side but seeing it from the air it just doesnt do it justice. It is absolutely tragic, devastating. Several coworkers have lost their homes. We have Business Partners and their businesses have burned down. Tears keep pouring and pouring from peoples faces as we work through the morning and realize what we have in front of us. Tell us about how your own staff is been personally impacted by this. I know you are trying to help locate some of your teammates in these impacted areas who might not have even had electricity or comms since yesterday. Anybody that has been to hawaii knows hawaii. We are all family. We all love and care for each other so much. It is devastating not being able to get a hold of some of your coworkers. You cannot stop thinking about it. We actually have a friend that has gone through in the areas that you are able to access and gone and knocked on doors and got some verification that people are okay but the fires are still going. The wins are still there. There are still ashes and hotspots. We just have to be careful. Its very limited. The road from the airport, the main airport in maui, they call it the poly road, its a two lane road that has been closed and there is limited access in and out. Limited cell coverage. No internet. They havent had power in 24 hours. It is really hard and it is going to take probably days before we know everybody is okay. Helicopters can land in just about any terrain although, obviously, it is dangerous, these are particularly dangerous conditions, have you ever seen anything like this as a Helicopter Pilot . I am specifically not a pilot. Im the president of the company. We were landing in a couple of airports and safety is our number one priority. We do a full risk assessment. We evaluate the wind and everything safety wise and we will not go if it is not safe. Safety is our number one priority. We will never put employees or anybody at risk before we do that and that is why we are landing at the designated Airport Versus some of these other spots. As of now, it is because it is the safety is saved us thing to do. When you think these horrible conditions are going to get better . I know you said earlier, these devastating winds, from earlier, you hope these will alleviate the scene because the hurricane is moving away. As the murder hurricane is moving away, so will the wind. The High Pressure to the north, it is blowing like this, the low pressure, the hurricane to the south, it is blowing like this. So, all that wind funneling through the islands and we had the hotspots in the hotspots showed up and then, all of a sudden, we had video and pictures and it is a devastating event. Block after block of homes just gone reminding you, reminding me, of something from southern california. 82 is the highest gust that we saw that is an enormous amount of wind when you consider how far away the hurricane actually is. At this point, 800 miles away. So, yes, i mean, hurricanes can hit hawaii and do and we do have winds of 60, 70, 80 sometimes but this was just a dry event. There goes the Hurricane Category four. Look at how far away the honolulu islands are. It is going to be a brittle afternoon and evening. Some of the pictures we are seeing coming in are devastatingly painful. They really are. When you see the pictures that we only had this morning and we thought that they were just hopefully burning trees, but in fact, they were not. They were burning homes. They were hotspots of what was left of the home. So, there goes the storm. It is going to be a much less oppressive storm in a couple of days and the more it moves farther and farther away. Tonight will be 40, tomorrow will be 30 and by the weekend the wins could be 10. What you would expect from the trades. Two islands. So, i maui county we have 39 personnel assisting the Maui Police Department with Traffic Control and roving security. Right now the number one goal for both counties and the hawaii National Guard is to protect lives. By setting of these roadblocks that is the best way that we can do it. The National Guard is assisting. We have been working 24 hours and are running out of personnel to do it. The hawaii National Guard is assisting them. They are even requesting more personnel for the very near future. The hawaii National Guard is also sending two helicopters to maui. There on the ground right now getting their assignment to head to the upcountry area of maui on the slopes to assist with Fire Suppression of there. They will be carrying 4000 gallon water box buckets. On the big island we have 30 personnel also assisting with Traffic Control in checkpoints. The activeduty army is assisting with Fire Suppression on hawaii island. Hawaiis Lieutenant Governor , who is acting governor because the governor is traveling right now, the Lieutenant Governor has called on the white house to declare a federal emergency. Do second that call . I think that is a great call. She is my boss. So, fema and the federal government has stepped in during our major disasters. This, by far, is one of the worst. Lava in 2014 and 2018. This fire is by far more devastating and quicker. My goodness, in two days the destruction it has cost. This morning when the sun came up, that was the first time maui and the big island of hawaii could see the damage and start to make assessments. There were not roadblocks but there were Telephone Poles across the highway that were burning. I couldnt go past that. Im looking for a couple personnel who are heroes in my mind. I know they were in the middle of fighting this thing last night. Thats less than heard from them. So, unfortunately, i cannot leave where im at. Im at my house. If i leave then the place Down The Street will im just hanging loose down here. I get phone calls from friends and neighbors and people giving me the information i need. Let me ask you, the maui mayor says the number of businesses impacted is going to be very high, what resources will be needed to rebuild do you think . I mean, its hard to say. Most of the people that work on west maui, im guessing maybe 25,000, 30,000 people are going to be homeless. It is because of this fire. That is a wild guess. I have lived in this community for years. Hotels north of us, i dont believe they have been impacted but there are definitely ones that are gone. Our family owns one of the Oldest Hotels in maui and into the state right there in lahaina town and it is completely ashes today. It is heartbreaking. We have not been able to, i mean, honestly, get our thoughts around this thing. We havent personally gone to see what happened yet. It is crazy. The anecdotal stories of people jumping into the ocean, i thought that was nuts to hear that. I see National Guard helicopters going up and down the shoreline right now looking for people, i think.
