More than 1,000 people are still missing in hawaii from the wildfires. The death toll is climbing to 111, and crews havent searched more than half of the burn zone. Officials are standing by their decision to not sound the alarm, as they now try to figure out how this tragedy was first ignited. The fallout from former president trumps legal troubles, jurors and a judge are now facing serious threat. This as we learn more about details about how donald trump plans to surrender, go to jail in georgia. New video just in, ukrainian troops training on crucial tanks, as ukraine retakes some key strategic territory. Im john berman with sara sidner and kate bolduan. This is cnn news central. The scope of pain, loss and tragedy in maui is becoming more clear today, as families face an agonizing wait to find out what has come of their loved ones still missing. And the death toll is climbing, right now 111 sets of remains have been found among the ashes. Hawaiis governor confirms to cnn more than 1,000 people remain unaccounted for, and while we still dont have a firm number, he does estimate that it could be up to 1,300 people missing. President biden, the first lady, they will be heading to maui on monday to see the devastation firsthand. Last hour, sara spoke with the White House Press secretary, who laid out the message that biden will be delivering when he arrives. The president s message and the first ladys message is going to be very clear, its going to be we are here for you today, tomorrow, for as long as it takes. Cnn is on the ground in maui. Gloria, the search through the fire zone has proved slow and grueling for the crews that are tasked with this. What does the search look like . Reporter well, its devastating for anyone who has to do it, kate, and weve heard from officials who are in charge of that search, in fact, we have heard from the local police chief who has been down to ground zero, the disaster where the fire was worse, where most of the victims have been found so far, and he described it as a catastrophic scene. I also just want to mention something that has really stuck with me over the past several days, the governor compared the zone that is currently being surged to searching through the rubble of a war zone or searching through the rubble that was left behind at ground zero after the 9 11 attacks. Thats what were talking about here. Thats what 40 cadaver dogs are currently searching through in order to find any possible human remains. Now, the governor has also told us that theres evidence that there were Young Children found in that area. He described coming upon a car that had two people in the front and Two Small Bodies in the bock. He was saying that that was likely a family that was trying to get out and didnt make it out. Now, im standing just outside of the checkpoint here into lahaina, and just in an hour or so its going to open up, allowing residents, workers and volunteers into the town for the day. Gloria, as you mentioned, especially when you put, as the governor has described what it looks like, like sifting through a war zone, at the same time officials have wanted to be clear that maui is not closed to tourists, just the west side of the island where you are and what the governor was describing. But what are you hearing about that . Reporter well, kate, listen, ive been here for several days now and its, frankly, a point of contention. You hear different opinions, and you could almost describe whats going on here as a tale of two islands. Lahaina is one city on the island of maui, and the rest of the island is okay, it has not been affected by the fire. Take a listen to what the spokesperson for hawaiis joint Information Center had to say about tourism. Visitors do contribute so much to our economy here and we appreciate that. At this point in time, were just asking that visitors dont go to west maui. The key here is respect for the special place that is home, and lahaina has such a rich history and culture. Right now were really focused on the families and loved ones and then well look to recovery and rebuilding. Right now it is a balance, it is about respect. Reporter so that is the key, stay away from areas where you do not need to be. Theres no need to be near lahaina if you have nothing to do here. The rest of the island could use the help. It is an important part of the economic engine of the state. For now, this area needs to be kept for recovery and the work thats happening here. Gloria, thank you for being there. The awful truth is the fires arent finished in other parts of hawaii and lahaina. Not the only place hit by wildfires. In the upcountry, crews are still putting out hot spots in kula. Cnns bill weir takes us there. Reporter aloha from the kula neighborhood. This is the ongoing upcountry fire several miles from lahaina, but several hundred homes were burned up here last week and there are active hot spots, still over a week after the initial blaze broke out. You can see the chopper in the distance is from the maui fire department. Hes got a bucket dangling below, and with precision, dipping it into Swimming Pools and dropping it on smoldering hot spots in these canyons. There was worry that if the winds cranked up again it could start a whole new firestorm up here. Here he is coming right now. This is really the only official presence weve seen, even this long after the initial fire. While we have heard reports they were going to double the number of National Guardsmen and maybe the coast guard to work on the fires, we havent seen any evidence of that yet. We are seeing, actually, a couple of folks with fema vests talking to homeowners about how to get them into the system for a onetime cash payout and maybe some support on housing repairs. If this is your house, there is no repair right now. Who knows how this will play out, given the couple thousand structures that were burned. But so many places are going to be starting from scratch, and that is probably the message the president will receive when joe and jill biden come here on monday. So this morning, Security Preparations are under way for donald trump to turn himself in to authorities in georgia, and new developments highlight why precautions are so important. Overnight Safety Concerns for the grand jurors who just issued the indictments in georgia, their photographs, social media profiles, even some of their purported home addresses have been published on sites and forums known to be used by violent extremists. In texas, a woman was arrested after police say she threatened to kill the federal judge handling the Elections Case in d. C. If trump does not get elected in 2024. Cnns Nick Valencia is outside the jail where donald trump is expected to turn himself in next week. Nick, on these new threats or new postings surrounding the grand jurors, what have you learned . Reporter a Law Enforcement source telling me with knowledge of the situation telling me that the jurors from Fulton County who issued an indictment earlier this week are currently being doxxed and their safety is a concern right now. The unfortunate reality of georgia law is the jurors names are made public, they were published in the indictment released earlier this week. As a result now of doing their civic duty, their lives are in danger. It was overnight we learned from Donie Osullivan that far right anonymous individuals are calling for violence against the Fulton County jurors, and in some cases some of their addresses purportedly belonging to some of the jurors made their way online, including social media profiles and photos. Cnn cannot independently verify the posts, but the names of some of those jurors appear to match the official names given on the dime. So far, the jurors have not spoken publicly, but security continues to be something thats a main issue for those tied to the Legal Process here. We are also learning of a texas woman who is currently in custody after threatening to kill the judge that is overseeing trumps federal election case. That judge receiving a phone call in her chambers on august 5th. We should mention the judge is black and the phone call not only said we are it says, quote, you are in our sights, we want to kill you, but it also included some racist language. Dhs Special Agents caught up with that woman three days later. Shes in pretrial detention. Were outside the Fulton County jail where we are waiting for the 19 defendants to turn themselves in, including the former president. We understand that trumps team is currently negotiating with Fulton County District Attorney and early indications are that the president is going to turn himself in sometime next week. Nick valencia outside the jail. The other defendants could turn themselves in any day, so there could be a lot of activity around where you are. Keep us posted. One of the concerns with all these threats, we talked to the former fbi director, this is just beginning. There are all these trials that are going to happen, all these jurors who will be sitting in them, and there will be Security Concerns for each and every one of them. It really is the beginning of the next chapter as all of it starts going to court. What john is getting at is the calendar is a real factor, not just an interesting water cooler topic. The calendar might be the newest figure to enter the 2024 president ial race. Here is why. We are less than a week away from the first 2024 republican president ial primary debate, just as the clear frontrunner who may or may not show up is facing a slew of legal issues. Donald trump is now facing 91 criminal charges, remember, across four separate indictments, and then add in two civil trials as well. Here are how things are lining up. On october 2nd new yorks Attorney General goes to trial Against Trump in a civil fraud case. Three months later, on january 2, the Justice Department wants to kick off its 2020 election subversion case Against Trump. On january 15th, then, a judge wants to start the trial in the second Defamation Case brought by columnist e. Jean carroll Against Trump. Fani willis has just asked the judge to set a Trial Date Of March 4th in georgias election case Against Trump. March 25th is the day scheduled to begin the criminal trial in new york over trumps 2016 hush money scheme. Then jump ahead, if you can, even, to late may, the federal criminal trial over trumps alleged mishandling of classified documents is set to begin. Summit all up, its jam packed and also not set in stone, so as confusing as the calendar really does look right now, it could get more confusing soon. That is an important note. With us now, former u. S. Attorney, harry litman. You just heard that litany of court dates that kate went over that is facing donald trump and some others. Can you give me some sense of how the judges in all of these Different Cases across many different jurisdictions and states, how theyre going to deal with this crowded calendar . I wish i could. It would be ideal if there were some kind of organizing force, but were talking about this is federalism, were talking about new york, georgia, the federal system, two different judges. It is bedlam. The calendar has become a supporting actor in this drama. And let me add one detail, fani willis has asked for her trial to start in march. This is a rico case. The last rico case she tried, and it had eight defendants, went for six months. So something has got to give, more than one thing has to give. But it wont necessarily be according to what makes most sense. Theres going to be all kinds of sort of informal jockeying and we dont know how the pieces will how it will all look when it sifts out. I imagine the attorneys in this case, particularly Donald Trumps attorneys, will have to go to each judge, and theyre going to have to say, look, we have a date thats in another state, can you change this . Will the judges be open to listening to that and to making way for some of these changes . Of course they will, and they can communicate sort of informally. And the prosecutors themselves have indicated, at least in new york and a little bit in georgia, that theyll have some flexibility as well. But if you thought of this rationally from the top down, i think you would really hope that the January 6th Trial goes first, but theres no kind of Master Administrator in the sky to order it that way. And for starters theres no guarantee is what youre saying. The second E Jean Carroll trial, the judge has said im not moving. Right. I want to talk about whats happening Going Forward. Donald trump has announced hes going to do a Big Press Conference on monday, hes talked about making false claims about georgia. If every time he goes to court it is a media frenzy and an opportunity for him to speak, do you think that any of these judges might decide that there has to be something put in place, ie, a gag order, to deal with what is happening . Well, first, on monday, his lawyers are trying desperately to tamp this down. Hes the worst client in the world and no worse idea than spouting out everything, especially since it will be false. Not just because theyll talk, but to the extent he intimidates witnesses, and that is his track record and m. O. I do want to ask you, lastly, about this really disturbing trend that were now seeing. Pictures, social media profiles, even purportedly home addresses of these grand jurors in georgia, and threats being made on some online sites, all of whom voted to indict donald trump. Theres also a threat and an arrest against the judge in the d. C. Case. Is this going to have a chilling effect, and how should the government do something to protect these people . It is horrifying, and the government will marshal its forces, but it only makes one lone wolf. This is like january 6th all over again. Trump puts into motion certain forces and then he cant control them. It is genuinely a terrifying prospect, and if something goes awry, its a tragedy and also a huge challenge for the system. Now, the question is, how is that going to play as the president ial candidate for the Republican Party, whoever it ends up being, tries to march forward and actually win enough votes in the state . But he lost and the recount showed that. But this is going to be a tight battle, no matter who ends up being at the top of the ticket. Case in point, the popular republican governor of the state, im fascinated on his role Going Forward and how thats going to play out. He tweeted a response, cameron, and i know you saw this as well, to trumps promise that hes going to release a report, he called it a report, that he claims will prove fraud did occur in 2020 and it will also help to exonerate him of the charges that he faces. So then the sitting republican governor of georgia, his response to that social media posting was this, the 2020 election in georgia was not stolen. For nearly three years now anyone with evidence of fraud has failed to come forward under oath and prove anything in a court of law. Our elections in georgia are secure, accessible and fair, and will continue to be as long as im governor. The future of our country is at stake in 2024 and that must be our focus. What do you think of that and what do you see as kemps role coming up . As someone who has covered georgia politics for a long time, that was extraordinary. Its a fairly measured tweet, it was posted he appended trumps truth social comments below that. So it was a direct response to what trump had posted. And throughout the mess since 2020, and weve been basically in election mode here since then, kemp has been fairly muted in his response to trump. The publisher of a kansas newspaper raided by police says he feels vindicated because the top prosecutor in his county withdrew the Search Warrant in the case. There was swift condemnation from First Amendment advocates across the country after the police searched and in a search and seizure at the Marion County records office, computers, phones and other items were seized. But now police have to return it all. Cnn correspondent whitney wild is here with details. What more are you hearing about this . I know they were able to publish even after all of the searching and the seizure of all the things. But they start by saying seize but not silence. Whats going to happen now with their equipment . Reporter well, its been returned. The next step is to figure out if it was accessed by Law Enforcement. Law enforcement says they are going to move forward with this investigation independently, that will not include examining or even retaining those devices. But an attorney for the newspaper tells me that you must trust but verify, so they will have their own forensic Expert Review that. Here is what the publisher, eric meyer, told jake tapper about all of this. Are you taking any legal action . Still up in the air. I think its quite possible, because there needs to be a clear line that this is not allowed. Theres a lot of very strange things. They searched a reporters computer who had been sick that week and hadnt been involved. They also took her cell phone. She wasnt in the office at that time. So a lot of strange things that hint of possible intimidation and attempted bullying. Reporter here is what the local prosecutor has to say about all of this. The affidavits which i am asking the court to release established probable cause to believe that an employee of the newspaper may have committed unlawful acts concerning computers. Upon further review, i have come to the conclusion that insufficient evidence suggests to establish a nexus between this alleged crime and the places searched and the items seized. The attorney for the newspaper told me they have not been told they are not subject to the investigation, but moving forward the expectation is Law Enforcement will work with the attorney and well see where this goes, sara. Its interesting. Usually in these cases you get a subpoena to turn things over. You are not raided. So well have to see where this goes. I know youll be following it all. Thank you so much. Growing tensions this morning between New York State and new york city over the migrant situation in the city. Lawyers for governor kathy hochul have sent a scathing letter blasting new york citys handling of the influx of Asylum Seekers. The governor can acknowledge that mayor adams had, quote, an extraordinary challenge dealing with the crisis, she did note that adams, quote, did invite all these individuals in. Reporter and, john, i can save you the reading, that pretty lengthy letter basically says that Governor Hochul takes issues with many aspects of the handling of the migrant crisis and saying the city can do more in a proactive, timely and collaborative manner. For starters, the governor lays out a list of about 14 locations in and around new york city that the city could potentially use to house Asylum Seekers. However, the city has passed on those locations. The mayor in the last hour, eric adams, saying they did not ignore any site recommendations, simply they are not sustainable, dont work in terms of the goal to house Asylum Seekers. Adams saying that he hopes to sit down with hochuls team to explain why they didnt take him up on that offer. Also, the governor zeroing in on the recent practice of Offering Relocation for Asylum Seekers from new york city to other communities upstate, saying not only does this practice overall delay the Legal Process for Asylum Seekers, but, also, it makes Essential Services very difficult to reach. I want you to hear what Governor Hochul told our affiliate. Putting someone in a hotel on a dark, lonely road in Upstate New York and telling them theyre supposed to survive is not compassion. Our cnn team was there as ukraine retook the town of urozhaine, a key strategic location on the banks of a crucial river in an area that russia has occupied for more than a year. What youre seeing, urozhaine and another town that ukraine has been successful in terms of countering russian attempts at defending it, are both relatively small towns. But as you said, theyre critically important in terms of their Terrain Features and their ability to go further along to other locations that are Road Junctions and will get Ukrainian Forces down to the coast. The ukrainians want to cut those supply lines, they want to continue to breach the three lines of defenses, and its going to be continuously difficult because there are literally Tens Of Thousands of mines in those areas. That film you just showed of the tank going crosscountry and firing at targets that are 800 meters away, that is indicative of a close fight and some challenges for the ukrainian army. But they seem to be doing well in those areas. Were seeing tanks operate in that region. We also got new video in today of training taking place in germany. This is ukrainians being trained on leopard tanks. Leopards have been deployed in ukraine for some time now. What youre looking at here is ukrainian soldiers being trained on them outside of the country. Why is this significant . Youre getting me excited when youre talking tanks. The Tank Training is taking place at a place that is a german Training Area just to the west of berlin. It is one of several locations where Ukrainian Forces have been training. There have been about 8,000 or 9,000 tankers trained. Its going to continue to increase. What youre seeing in this film is a pair of tanks. This is called a tank section. And what theyre doing is learning the tricks of how to maneuver on territory and engage targets. Inside those tanks are a fourman crew, a driver, a loader, a gunner and a tank commander, and what they have to do is not only coordinate what goes on inside the tank and firing that 105 millimeter gun, but theyre also having to coordinate with that partner. You see both tanks in this film right now. They have to engage targets. You dont want to shoot at the same target with two different tanks. So theyre continuously scanning, looking for targets down range. These leopard 1a5s have been used by the dutch army and german army. Theyre a very good tank, theyre very fast, theyve got good Fire Control Systems and they can it targets.
