It is surrounded by mountainous terrain on the Northern Suppsid that wraps around to the west. Of it is a large airfield i a strategic location where lots of supplies and troops were brought in and out of the country. It was a military and civilian airport all at the sameerim time. The cia, afghans and certainly our Ou Wcoalition partners had our Ou Wcoalition partners had there was kind of an Outer Perimeter wall. Everyone had their piece of that large pie if nesyou will. So, the first two days everyone is manning their position, security is stable and it is business as usual. So, planes were taking people so, planes were taking people out t civilians that i saw at this point. The planes were coming in and out taking highlevel and out taking highlevel afghans outside of our the O Daevacuation had not gone yet. Yet. [gun fire] [speaking in a global language]. [speaking in a global language] [gun fire] the initial push was probably about to 5000 people. Civilians were already starting to come and basically knock on the n crdoor and say i need to out. Theynded husband was an interpreter and evguys i need to get out. Men crying showing up with her kids and extended family we were not open for Evacuation Operations just yet. We did not have everyone there n just yet. We have a large portion of civilians that we finally got through the gate. The base is completely breached the airfield is completely overrun. Those aircraft to methem meant freedom. They just planted right there [peoto block everything you kno . Basically say you will take me in that thing right there and i am not moving until you do. At this point we rousted 150 marines onthat i had to open u the airfield. Weand off had planes flying in loitering they could not land. Loitering they could not land. Anyone airfield the plane cannot land and the plane cannot take off. And the plane cannot take off. Right now. We tried to push them back and keep them off of the runways we could continue to land our additional forces, continue to land supplies because that was lifeline if we lost that airfield i have no doubt we wouldve all died. From midnight to about 5 am as hwe pushed them back and to to put this into words that fight that night it was handtohand. It was using rifles as impact weapons. It wasnt pleasant for them or us. [speaking in a global language]. [speaking in a global language]. [speaking in a global language] on Early Morning of the 16th some taliban started to the airfield and thats when things to get a little bit d oncrazy. Right about sunup the taliban fighter appeared firing his rifle in the air and one of our marines killed him. One clean shot took his life. And thats when i fired my weapon and shot the second one in the chest. We had been fighting these people for 20 years. So he was a target. He was a ow threat and he had toumbe go. There is a firefight that is happening right in front of us now you know the numbers only continue to grow. Now the number i would say is between eight and 10,000. We had opened the airfields that was a huge win. On the 16th Of August when i woke up all i heard was that we family has lived, th family has lived and there was a rumor that around 900 people wereanis evacuated from afghanistan. And, people of different categories could leave afghanistan on that night. [speaking in a global language]. [speaking in a global language]. For the taliban took over we had a simple life. Not perfect. It was not perfect but it was good. [speaking in a global language]. We are the main victims. Women. For that the changes afghan women brought to Afghanistan Theyone Have Fough for years for the ability to get educated. For the ability to work and on that day i felt like all of their efforts will be ruined in one shesday. The women were thinking of killing, were tally, flashes, fo marriages. All is what the uncewomen had i mind specifically women who were working because they knew what the reality was. That was in insecurity, and brutality. [speaking in a global language] [gun fire] [speaking in a global language]. [speaking in a global language] our nsmissio hn was to not anyone leave the country. [speaking in a global language] [gun fire] [gun fire]. [speaking in a global language] that whole base was porous. It really was. There were a lot of weaking po. We were certainly having breaches in security all over the base. People jumping the walls and trying to get in. People started coming over fences, coming through the airport. [gun fire] it is 10 00. I looked over to my left, thousand start pulling through. Another Hole In The Wall and we did not know. We did not know that portion of the rt base. I think the estimate was 24,000 afghans inside the airport with untold number of outside the airport. Now we have to split the already small force we have to run back across the airfield, go get those people and corral them and start pushing them back for several hours. The runway was the mission. Keep Thelane Runway Open at all costs. [speaking in a global language] [gun fire] [gun fire] fire] that i thought i was going to die. [speaking in a global language]. [speaking in a global language]. So to clear a path for the aircraft we had apaches essentially fly as low as they possibly could to physically push the people out the way. Then ac 17 comes in because the airfields are open. It was just mass hysteria. You could see it in their eyes they immediately overran us. They push us aside ran over marines punching, clawing and screaming. We shut the airfield down. [speaking in a global language]. [speaking in a global language] thats the Beacon Of Hope and freedom. They think they need to get on that to get out. So now, it is a long kilometer and a half run back as we are chasing everybody. My position at that point was to get people in front of me back. It was just a straight brawl. I am stilli g getting radio ca now from the Operations Center saying the airfield is not open anymore, you need to get these people off. I get it, we need to get the people off. The people are all around it. I get up to where i know the pilot would be able to see me if you looked over and he finally looked over like this and he makes eye contact with me and i just point at him and and they slowly started moving that c17. The people kind of climbed on the airplane. Maybe they thought it was their way to get out of afghanistan to write on the outside of a c17 somewhere. I can see the c17 gaining speed. And as we are at each others throat its one of this where we are stop and watch as the c17 captures the attention of the entire crowd and everything goes silent. [speaking in a global language]. [speaking in a Global Tedentila that kind of deflated the entire situation. The c17 was finally gone. Outthose people had fallen. Maybe some of the people on the ground there realized okay theres got to be another way because they are not letting us out right now. D mo now we are getting to t end ofmore really what would ha been a day and a half at this point and or people started to come. The sun is starting to go down we have lost themendon airfiel. Several more times. Several more times. For every want to tell your men you dont know what to do. In that moment i had no idea what to dospec. I get a hel they are calling to tell me we they are calling to tell me we Afghan Special unit thats going to help us and imally thinking this is great okay good this is a Host Nation Force that knows the culture speaks the language they are going to help re,out really at this point i just need extra topeople and i dont care wh is. The afghan unit that was there, the way that they got the people off to get the point as Running Er Aeveryone Over and shooting them. They killed them. I watched from afar and it a h dark at this point so i could only see who was getting run over and[ind shot by a vehicle headlight. It was a horrific scene. There were people getting executed on the airfield. It wasd th horrible. To see that happen. But It Clearedppen Out The Airf and e cothat afghan unit, their arrival is what cleared the airfield. I dont know what would have happened on the airfield if they didnt come. That night and the next morning there were no more large crowds. We are starting with
