Declared a State Of War Alert and is mobilizing its forces in response to an unprecedented attack today against israel. It began unfolding about 6 30 this morning with wave after wave of rockets from gaza. Hamas claims it fired 5,000 rockets as israeli Officials Say there were multiple injuries, some of them serious, and at least one fatality. Some airports have temporarily closed although the International Airport remains open for now. The Israeli Military also says a number of militants have infiltrated israel from gaza. The hamas Military Commander calling in a recorded message for a general uprising against israel and saying, quote, if you have a gun, get it out. Israelis living near gaza are being warned to stay close to their shelters. Cnns hadas gold joins us now from jerusalem. I see you are back in the staircase, so im gathering the alarms have gone off again. Reporter yeah. Im not sure if you can hear them in the background. We can hear them now. The sirens have been going off which means we in jerusalem need to go into a protected space. I have not, in my time here, experienced so many sirens. Weve been hearing the interceptions or impacts overhead from these rockets here in jerusalem. Normally jerusalem is sort of kept out of these conflicts because of its proximity to the holy sites. Not this time. Even in 2021, we had that major conflict, that 11day war between hamas militants and israel. Jerusalem had a few sirens, a few rockets, but after that, it was kept out of the conflict. This Time Jerusalem is very much involved. There have been sirens going off across all israel since 6 30 other than the north. Its been mostly tel aviv area and then south. Just constant, constant Air Raid Sirens. We dont have i aspecific number of the number of rockets fired. About two hours ago, hamas k claimed they have fired at least 5,000 rockets. It appears to have been a coordinated effort not to just fire off these rockets but also infiltration. The military and police have confirmed there have been militants who have infiltrated communities in southern israel from the gaza strip. Weve seen videos of militants on the back of pickup trucks firing towards the streets. We do know the Israeli Police and military are responding to this. Theyre telling all israeli civilians in southern israel to stay in their shelters, lock their doors. Israeli civilians elsewhere in the country are being advised to stay close to their shelters. There have been rather regular Air Raid Sirens going off. Hamas is calling this the al aqsa storm. Theyre calling on all palestinians to pick up a gun, pick up an ax, and to essentially attack israel. Theyre saying this is directly connected to what has been happening at the al aqsa compound, which is also known as the temple mount to jews. Typically in the past when weve have these sorts of conflicts, theres been some sort of trigger. There have been clashes, a major arrest of a major militant. None of that happened this past week. There were some tensions. There were groups of jews who went to visit the compound when theyre allowed during visiting hours. There had been typical tensions, some protests along the Separation Fence between gaza and israel. Of course weve had this ongoing, highly tense situation in the occupied west bank with regular incursions into palestinian towns, going after militant. High, high number of death toll for palestinians as well as an increasing number of palestinian attacks towards israelis in the last year and a half. But there wasnt a trigger point. Thats why it feels as though israel has been caught off guard. Theres been a lot of comparisons to whats happening now to what happened 50 years ago when israel was caught off guard by that war. This feels something similar. This feels unprecedented. The Israeli Military is saying that they are in a State Of War Alert. Theyre mobilizing all of their theyre mobilizing their reserves. We dont know how many soldiers will be mobilized. The Police Commissioner has called this a state of war, saying there are 21 fronts going on as we speak. The biggest concern right now for the Israeli Security establishment is these infiltrations because its so difficult to go after house by house, car by car, to try to figure out what is going on. We have seen the reports of either israeli civilians if that has happened, that would be another incredible major escalation to have an israeli soldier or civilians captured or killed and brought into gaza. We will follow those and bring you more information on that as we receive it. Hadas, have we heard from Prime Minister netanyahu or anyone from the israeli leadership . Reporter what weve heard from the Prime Minister is that they are receiving updated reports. There will be a Cabinet Meeting today. We know that all of the top ministers, including the National Security minister, including the Defense Minister, have all been briefed. They are meeting on this. Its possible weve gotten a comment in the last few minutes. My phone continues vibrating nonstop. This is obviously a situation we have not been in, to have the idf declare essentially a State Of War Alert, to have the israeli home front command telling all israeli civilians essentially from the tel aviv central area down to stay close to their shelters, dont go outside right now. That is unprecedented. The par its a saturday. Its shabbat, so the parallels, you cannot ignore them. Theres also a fear the north may get involved, will try to get involved in this as well. That could obviously escalate this even further. The military response, we should expect a massive and Major Military response, especially as were hearing that the Israeli Military is calling up the reserves. For our international viewers, can you put this into context for us . What does it mean when israel calls up its reservists . Reporter i mean that means that they are planning a massive response because normally they can operate without even calling up the reserves. Calling up the reserves is calling up nonactive duty, people who are in their 30s and 40s to come up and serve. That gives you an indication they are planning a massive, massive response towards the gaza strip and also probably being prepared for another fronts, on the north in particular, with hezbollah, with the other palestinian militant groups in the northern border, potentially other fronts as well. Theyre getting themselves prepared. We should expect probably a very intense air response to whats happening in gaza, air strikes in the gaza strip. I mean if were going to compare the response here, i think we have go back almost a decade if not more. How extraordinary is it in terms of preparedness, you know, to have these concerted attacks happening in multiple places, different ways, and for israel to be caught off guard in this way . Reporter yeah, i think there will be major questions for the Israeli Security establishment, especially for these infiltrations. How did this happen . Where did these militants come from because launching rockets is one thing. But having multiple militants we dont know the numbers yet but the police have said there are 21 fronts. But having multiple groups of militants within israel itself ready to go when these rockets started, that is a huge hole for the Security Establishment of how this happened. Now, palestinians from gaza can come into israel. There are thousands who have work permits who come in across the border every single day and work in israel. So the question is were they already within israel, waiting . Did they find some sort of hole in a fence . How did they get across . I should also note in terms of injuries, were hearing from the israeli side, we know of at least one fatality, but there are reports of several others. We are getting reports from at least one hospital in the south of israel of at least 80 injuries. We dont know how many of these deaths or injuries yet are from rockets or shrapnel or whether theyre from these militants firing along the streets. Hadas gold reporting from jerusalem. Please stay safe. Thank you. Were also keeping an eye on new developments in ukraine, which is reporting new strikes on its grain infrastructure. It says russia struck Grain Facilities in the odesa region for a second straight day on saturday. The attacks also damaged Apartment Buildings and left four people wounded. But across the border, russia says its air defenses shot down a Ukrainian Drone near moscow without causing damage or casualties. That comes a day after Russian Missile attacks on kharkiv, where two people were killed and at least 30 wounded. And after a devastating attack on the village of horza, at least 52 people were killed on tuesday, which prompted the United Nations to send its investigators there. A coordinator said the strike amounted to a war crime. Lets get you more on these latest developments. Barbie nadeau is monitoring everything from rome. Barbie, what more have you been able to learn about these russian strikes in the Kharkiv Region . Reporter yeah. You know, theyre just devastating. These are the types of numbers of injuries and fatalities that we havent seen since the beginning of the war in terms of one single strike. And the u. N. Commissioner, you know, had a lot to say about it, especially looking at this as a war crime in a war that is completely filled with these sorts of atrocities. Lets listen to what she had to say. At this stage, its obviously very difficult to establish with absolute certainty what happened, but given the location, given the fact that the cafe was struck, the indications are that it was a Russian Missile. But i must underscore as weve said previously that this needs to be looked at further. But the absolutely clear thing is there was horrible loss of life, and that of course is to be deplored in all circumstances. Reporter you know, this is coming as the world is really suffering some hesitancy in terms of the support for ukraine. We see that in the united states. We see that here across europe as well, you know. Countries have a little bit of Battle Fatigue when it comes to continuing support. Thats really troubling because this is a crucial moment in the war when ukraine needs the sort of Military Hardware and Financial Support more than ever, laila. Just as the u. N. Has now deployed a field team to document what exactly happened there. Reporter yeah, thats absolutely right. That becomes very important. Eventually theyre going to be looking back at the war crimes that were committed, and thats something that is going to be we see this in wars across the world, but this is going to be especially important in this particular battle. Barbie nadeau reporting, thank you so much. Cnns Fred Pleitgen spoke with some residents who lost loved ones in the strike on hroza. He has this report about the fallout from the attack and the one in kharkiv. Reporter another massive Missile Attack in eastern ukraine. Two killed, dozens wounded. The city kharkiv was hit early friday. The ukrainians say this was the work of the same type of missile that killed more than 50 in a village close by just a day earlier. Anatoly tells me pretty much every family in hroza lost someone. His brother and his brothers wife also among the dead. I just heard the explosion, looked at the dust, and realized my brother was there, he says. They identified the bodies. Their son went to pick them up. We will bury them tomorrow. The plot for their burial already marked at the local cemetery. Close to the fresh grave of the soldier whose wake the victims were attending at a local cafe when the missile struck. At the attack site, crews already clearing the debris. The authorities here quickly realized they werent going to find any more survivors underneath debris, and you can see here that this has now gone from being a Search And Rescue to being Recovery Operations with the teams here searching for human remains. Amidst the belongings of those killed littering an adjacent playground, Police Officers catalog what they believe are parts of the powerful es cander missile that annihilated the building. Nearly a third of hrozas residents lost their lives here. Those who are left shocked and grieving. 73yearold valentina lives right next to the site. I knew all of them, she says. They are all from here, all from our village. Fred pleitgen, cnn, hroza, ukraine. The u. S. Congress cant approve any future military aid for ukraine as long as the house remains without a speaker. These people are the most vulnerable. They would be on the street or in their car if they werent here. There are families here that are still saying im waiting for the bus to take me back home. Reporter the road from nagornokarabakh is very long. Its very mountainous. At times its very winding as well. Its also very empty as are the settlements across the border in azerbaijan that weve managed to have a glimpse of because all 120,000 people who once lived there have now evacuated those settlements, and theyve come to armenia, where theyre living in hotels, in refugee centers, or with family.
