Unhinged rally in ohio for an hourandahalf, he delivered some migrants, animals and warning of a quote, bloodbath asked if he loses to joe biden, trump, spread more lies about the 2020 election saluting those convicted of crimes. On january 6th for their attempt to subvert democracy ladies and gentlemen, please rise for the horribly and unfairly treated january 6, tass ditches. You see the spirit from the hostages and thats what they are as hostages. Theyd been treated terribly, unbelievable patriots and they were unbelievable do you its nr that was met with fierce backlash from a handful of republicans, including trumps former Vice President mike pence, who has now refused to endorse his former boss well i think its very unfortunate at a time that there are american hostages being held in gaza that the president or any other leaders would refer to people that are moving through our Justice System as hostages. And its just its just unacceptable all right, lets discuss was he didnt political commentator, democratic strategists Maria Cardona and cnn political commentator and republican strategist alice stewart. Alice lets jump right into this. I do. Do most republicans think that people can convicted of committing crimes on january 6th are quote, hostages and patriot you have to think up many republicans in trumps base, going back to the very beginning, they believed donald trump when he says that there were widespread election fraud, they believed donald trump when he says joe biden did not, when i am the duly elected president , and they believed donald trump when he sought to stop the certification of the Election Results so those that went to the capitol that day, as were seeing here to quote, peacefully protest and then others that went into the capitol. Theyre listening to donald trump saying, these people are just doing the will of donald trump in order to protect a democracy but not theyre not patriots, theyre not hostage. No, no, thats insurrectionist. Theyre terrorists they cause the death of five police officers. They defiled Criminals Exam for big criminal. Thats exactly right. Yeah. I think what is so dangerous about this rhetoric and i know my friend alice is explaining to us why hes doing it and why republicans refuse to excuse it. And are turning themselves around in circles trying to figure out how to respond to this publicly. But heres why its so dangerous. Donald trump, leading up to january 6 was not even as explicit as he was talking about. Now, he talked about come to the capital. Its going to be wild and look what happened. He caused an instrument correction, which is why a Lot Of These Quote Unquote Patriots are in the media hasnt really paid a price thats right. Took place on january 6. I mean, look at what he said about the Auto Industry and what will happen to this country if he loses to joe biden. Lets watch were going to put a 100 tariff on every single car that comes across the line. And your dr. To be able to sell those guys. If i get elected now, if i dont get elected, its going to be a bloodbath for the whole thats gonna be the least of it. Its going to be a bloodbath for the country thatll be the least of it. But theyre not going to sell those cars now, but maria, The Trump Camp in alice, the Trump Campaign was very here. This is what the Biden Campaign said in response to all of this, they said he wants another january 6, the Trump Campaign refuted that said he was just talking about the Auto Industry and so on. Theyre crying foul over how this has been covered. But if you look at alice, if you look at the way he said this, its going to be a bloodbath for the whole than he stops. Thats gonna be the least of it. Thats gonna be the least of it. Its going to be a bloodbath for the country. And if you look at it in context, also where it says talking about the Auto Industry and a 100 tariff on every car thats bought into this country is talking about the Auto Industry and the impact of biden policies have on the Auto Industry just the yard i to i believe he uses the term bloodbath. He is talking about this in an economic sense. And you look at the word when thats gonna be the bathroom, its going to be a bloodbath of the country. Were talking about. The other definition of bloodbath is a severe loss in reversal. And this is used all the time when were talking about the stock market and the economy. And hes talking, look, i think this was a tremendous disservice. I love you, but im and i love you too. I think that lives. Let me tell you. I really think because, you know, was it out of context when you said very fine people on both sides outofcontext when he said we got to fight, like hell, you want have a country more. If i agree with ada context, what he said, can you back and if i can to finish what im saying. Sure. I this was taken out of context. Hes talking about the Auto Industry. Hes talking about the Electric Vehicle mandates that the Biden Administration is supporting and how that is going to devastate the Auto Industry. And hes basically sitting the message to people across middle america. The united auto workers, the actual workers, not the head, but workers really about what he called. Lets play those. What about what he called migrants, animals . Lets watch that if i had prisons that were teeming with ms 13 and all sorts of people that theyve got to take care of for the next 50 years, right . Young people theyre in jail for years. If you calling people, i dont know if you call them people in some cases, than not people in my opinion, these are bad. These are animals maria, i mean, i hear what alice is saying and you know, we have fiery discussion. Sometimes we all respect to each other at the end of the day but to me its really a stretch to say, well, these things are out of context or its just rhetoric and said this is just, its so dangerous. It, if it seems to be encouraging violence and when you dehumanize migrants, yes. Calling them animals. Thats exactly right. And maybe it would be more believable. What alice was saying if we were talking about a normal person, were not talking about a normal person. Were talking about donald trump. And he has a history of talking about violent rhetoric, violent actions. He knows that his maga, cult followers, that his supporters hear a dog whistle and theyre saying, oh, here is what donald trump is telling us to do. Thats why tenor is six happen. So when he talks about a bloodbath this is not the first time that he talks in these terms. Its cpac, his supporters were talking about a civil war. If donald trump lost the election, this leads to a bloodbath. This leads to death. What was killed on january 2 shootings, the whole issue about dehumanizing migrants. He talks about how your family and mine poison the blood of this country. Jim. Yeah, and that is not innocent. Talk that led to a shooting and el paso that led to the shooting in uvalde, these things do not happen without other crimes or not bloodbath. Why even used that line . Well, i know you advise a candidate. Again, the term is used all the time. Were talking about stock market the economy, and a tremendous loss. And thats what hes talking about here in response to the animal comment, he specifically, again, i understand democrats wanted to take everything out of context, but in this case, hes talking about ms 13, gang members, killers, gang members are animals aside from that, and im hardly at Trump Apologists, but im saying in that instance, hes talking about ms 13 and i will go on to say i agree with maria talking about poisoning the blood of those country and other references to those coming into this country are right over the weekend. He said he said he didnt know that hitler used that kind of language to describe the jewish people. But this has been pointed out in the News CoverageTime And Again that this is rhetoric used by it off hitler. And he watches the news all the time. So he knows hes seen the coverage. So over the weekend when he says, oh, i didnt realize that hes lying. I mean, why give him that benefit of the doubt . You guys know me. I hardly at Trump Apologists and if he does wrong, i will point it out, but i think in these two instances right here that are making headlines across every newspaper, you see they does it over. His point he can make the case that bidens Border Policies or disastrous to this country, he can make the case that his economic policies or disastrous to the Auto Industry, but he can do so with much less. Thats the problem. And thats why it makes it dangerous. And it makes it unacceptable. And thats why people like mike pence, bill barr, john kelly, people have worked for him sidebyside side have now said he is not fit to run the country and the right. All right, guys, thanks a lot. I know were going to have this spirit discussion Time And Again, really appreciate it. Thanks a lot all right. Right. Now we have big development. Pennsylvania man who was exonerated in november, more than 12 years ago, cj rice was sentenced to 30 to 60 years in prison for attempted murder in a 2011 shooting. Last year, a judge found that his Trial Counsel rendered ineffective assistance and had said that pennsylvania had 180 days to decide whether to retry him or free cnns jake tapper has been bringing awareness to the story, joins me now from philadelphia with this but very big development, jake, what can you tell us hey gem . So im outside the criminal Justice Center in downtown philadelphia. Just got out of room 805. Thats the courtroom where judge James Eisenhower granted the motion to by the District Attorney, larry krasner, to drop all charges against cj rice. Cj rice is now a free man cj rice has been completely exonerated people watching might recall, weve been covering the story for several years jay rice was the patient of my pediatrician father and my dad testified that in 2011, theres no way cj could have committed the crime this shooting, three or four people were wounded, nobody seriously, but cj in 2013 was sentenced to 32, 60 years in prison. As you noted largely because he had a completely incompetent attorney that was the cover story. I wrote a cover story for the Atlantic Magazine in 2022 called this is not giant justice, a philadelphia, a teenager and the empty promise of the sixth amendment, which guarantees people a right to fair adequate council and an attorney. Carl swartz, working with a number of other attorneys, filed a Habeas Petition not long after that and the District Attorney has now granted that Habeas Petition and the court has said, cj rice did not get a fair trial, did not have adequate representation patient the District Attorney has concluded that the case was week to begin with. The only reason he went to prison was because he had a bad attorney. And for the first time in the whole sorry, history of this case of the Commonwealth Of Pennsylvania versus cj rice. Finally justice has been served. Jim and jake. What led the District Attorney to this decision . Well, obviously, the efforts of the lawyers, cjs lawyers, emilia max field, with the Innocence Project and now the Exoneration Project carl swartz, there were others that helped on virility. The former obama solicitor general, people got involved. But what happened is the District Attorney investigated the case for themselves and found that a lot of first of all, that he had an adequate counsel and that Sanjay Weaver, his attorney, who has since passed away, should never have granted any number of things that she did in court. For example, a theory of the case that this was a retaliation there was no evidence that this was retaliation, but she granted that. But they also did their own investigation. They listened to Jailhouse Recordings of Conversation Cj had with his mom and which he was pleading to have his mom asks his attorney, Sanjay Weaver to please get the Phone Records because the cell Phone Records would prove that he was in West Philadelphia at the time of the shooting . Not in South Philadelphia is something that Sanjay Weaver never did, something that the Philadelphia Police apparently never did when they were investigating this case. Okay. So that was a big part of it. They also looked into other things that were very suspicious about the only person who said that cj did this as one eyewitness who knew him, didnt say didnt identify him the night of the shooting, didnt identify him to the hospital so now, but then after police said they got an anonymous tip that cj did it. Suddenly she identified him. They found her. Her testimony not particularly reliable, so they did their own investigation and they concluded that this needed to be done, that he needed to be exonerated in this goes to the issue of defendants not having effective representation it does. And in fact, i talked to cj rice for a documentary. Were doing about this case. Its going to air on sunday on the whole story with anderson cooper. And if we have time, id love to run just a little clip of that interview that i did with cj rice good to see you because it cej youve spent almost 13 years in prison. Has it feel to be out . Amazing he said the air tastes sweeter. Air tastes sweeter. The signage shine different. Its a different warmth. Affiliate a sudden, as a free man, as can put it in words. So these ladders from my dad, did you look forward to getting them . I did. Yeah, i did like a lot. Really. Yeah. Because its a constant. So you get used to constants in jail. But most of them are demeaning or not so personal but a letter with ink on it from somebody on other side of the wall thats personal, that makes you feel human. The canon concern as a father had for me it was genuine. My dad always says that we dont have a Justice System. We have a legal system, but theres no justice necessarily i can attest today. I can attest it. It so theres cj rice who is now 30 years old. He went into prison when he was 17 years old when he turned himself in hes now 30. He is a free man. His Second Chapter of his life begins today, and this really happened because of cj rights and because of my father, who never stopped advocating for him during these 12 plus years, he was in prison. Were going to have a lot more about this on my on the lead today at 04 00 p. M. Eastern, but also on the whole story with anderson cooper, we have a whole documentary ready . Its called justice delayed. The story of cj rice finally, a good news story. Jim, back to you and an extraordinary one as well. All right, jake, thank you very much.
