Thank you so much for joining me on Fredricka Whitfield and we begin with a widespread floods, devastating much of texas a millions and the southeastern part of the state are under flood watches after several days of heavy rain, entire neighborhoods are inundated with water as the flooding spreads, the high rescues have also surged so far in Harris County, which includes houston, more than 200 people and more than 150 pets ive been rescued from the flood zone. We have teamed coverage from cnn correspondent rosa flores and cnn meteorologist chad myers. Rosa, lets begin with you. Their inherent chris county. You had an opportunity firsthand to talk with people and to survey some of the damage for, you know, fred people here are counting their blessings because there had been no deaths and no major injuries, but there will be major damage. You can just see around me in the water has swallowed roads and inundated some communities. This road leads to a community that back there you can see that there theres a restaurant, theres also some homes. And in rv park and the water levels while they have receded, some they are still very high. You cant get access to this area by vehicle. You have to get access by boat and thats exactly what we did. We wrote along with the Harris County sheriffs office. Now, this team has been going doortodoor for several days trying to rescue people who dont want to be rescued from um, this mandatory evacuation zone. Now, we wrote along with them over fences and over mailboxes. We saw that stopped signs were at eye level. That just gives you a sense of the amount of water in this area. Now, they also shared some pictures and we have those pictures for you of some of the rescues that they conducted in this area. They rescued children, the elderly also pets now, this area is an area that has the San Jacinto River running towards the gulf of mexico. And these First Responders took us to the area where we were supposed to see the banks of the San Jacinto River. But you cant see them take a listen its the same jacinto river. Its kinda hard to tell where the river ends because the blood but past the pylons. And if you look back that way, you can see interstate ten and the bridge going over the same jacinto river and you see, you get a feel for how swollen the river is and how far it is out of its banks brad, just to give you some perspective, because perspective is important here, Harris County is one of the largest counties in this country at last, check authorities its believed that several hundred homes are impacted, but they also say that they have not done Damage Assessments for obvious reasons. You can see that the water is still very high in some areas, but those Damage Assessments are expected to start either tomorrow or later this week its a terrible situation. All right. Rosa flores. Thank you so much. Chad myers and the weather enter. All right. So what is happening weather wise . What can they look forward to or brace for they can look forward to many, many more days of dry weather, dry, drying now, but not completely stopped, but this is at least some good news here. The weather will remain stagnant and not really move any more big water into the houston area over the next few days, but water is still rising. What are still rising because theres still water up river that has to come down river. Theres houston way down there, but all of these, this is ten inches or more, some spots picked up to this is ten inches or more. All of this. Rosa said has to get down to the gulf of mexico. So theres these bubbles in the rivers where some people downstream arent seeing flooding yet. But they will, as that water continues to rise, there are a few showers out there right now, but not like earlier and certainly not like weve had over the past couple well, the good news is there are Flood Warnings. There are no flash Flood Warnings, and theres a huge different flash Flood Warning. You means waters coming up fast Flood Warning means yes, your wet youre going to stay wet, but were not going to put people in lifethreatening situations with that rapidly rising water. Theres your radar tomorrow at 5 00. Itll be the prettiest sunrise youve seen texas in a long time, still could be some Severe Weather today, but thats not really the threat today. Tomorrows the threat for Severe Weather. Weve had a lot of tornadoes. The last day without a tornado, red, april 24. No. Oh, well, ten days straight. Yeah. Its been too much and a lot all right. Thank you so much. Chad myers, are were also seeing new developments today in the nationwide propalestinian protests on College Campuses. The main campus of the university of Southern California is now back open after police cleared an encampment earlier today and arrested at least 25 protesters, for trespassing. Cnns Camila Bernal is on the campus at usc. So camilo, whats been the reaction . And how how are people feeling now that the campus is back open hey fred, things have been calm this morning and the university is saying that the operation of clearing all of these students, encampment was peaceful and it was successful. It took them 64 minutes to get everyone out of the university and its a very, very different scene from what we saw about two weeks ago here on campus when things got extremely violent and many people got arrested, there is already a disciplinary process in place and starting to figure out whats going to happen to all of these people that were arrested and affiliated with the university. But youre seeing these repercussions its not just here on this campus, but around the country as well its really heavy emotionally hearing the sun, grenades youre fired from the rubber bullets, and you dont know whats happening. These are the moments ucla students, Sabrina Ellis is still trying to process. I was just trying to go minute by minute my my feet were hurting from standard ending up for so long. I do think that the message of the encampment and the protest was important enough that i felt the risk was worth it. Well, sabrina is not facing charges the consequences for some protesters around the nation can be serious and include detainment, misdemeanors, school suspensions, and expulsions. And in the case of michael allen, a lecturer at Washington University in st. Louis, paid administrative leave. There was arrested within three minutes of the Police Decision to push into the encampment he says he was not part of the encampment, but was there to protest the Faculty Member concerned about my students getting arrested that was the moment of his arrest. He says hes not facing criminal charges, but the detainment and suspension mean hes not allowed to set foot on the university pending an investigation he says he was told by the university that he cannot finish the semester, have contact with students or attend commencement. Will the university and effect is doing is actually impacting a lot more people than just those of us who were on campus on april 27 the University Said they dont comment on personnel matters, but said that of the 100 people arrested, 23 were Washington University students its reflective of what authorities have announced around the country of the more than 2,100 arrested during the clearing of income that means not all have been students at the university of Southern California. School officials say, of the 93 arrested 51 were students officials have said theyd to have started a disciplinary process for Campus Members who have violated their policies and the law. Some california legislators calling for even harsher punishments there does need to be accountability. Yeah. And i think some people need to be fired. They point to harassment antisemitism, and unsafe campuses and say that those convicted should be punished through the state budgeting process, losing funding for the university grants, people doing the should have been arrested. They should be suspended, but there should also be other accountability for this action. But some of the students that were in the encampment and part of the more than two hendrick detained at ucla say that, well, they wont reveal future plans. This is far from over and its unclear if the protesters here at usc have future plans, but the university is requiring ids for anyone wanting to come in and also saying that there is no camping gear allowed on campus spread. All right. Give me a lever and thank you so much. So how will these College Campus protests impact the Political Landscape . I want to discuss this more with julian zelizer, a cnn political analyst historian and professor at princeton university. Good to see you nice to be with you. All right, listen first to what democratic senator John Fetterman was saying today, who attacked or has criticism for some propalestinian protesters on College Campuses and argued that liberal voters who turned on President Biden over because of the war in gaza, it will, they will only have themselves to blame if former President Trump is elected in november. Listen what does voters who say that they are going to sit out the election . Those democratic voters who say theyre going to sit out the election. Yeah, 100 , like if they want to throw michigan to trump that way well, if you want to play with that fire or you better own, you better own that fire so julian, i mean, what do you say to his Point Of View there well, i mean theres competing tensions within the democratic party. There are democratic voters who might be turned off by what theyre seeing on College Campuses. And if theres not a strong response, maybe they wont vote. On the other hand, is many young people who are going to feel quite disillusion, not even about the process test, but the response to the protests. And if they dont vote he wont get critical numbers that in 2020 help them get elected. So this is the balance that President Biden politically is trying to deal with i mean, in fact, election day is just six months away. You know, today. And while biden said just last week, there will be no policy change as a result of him. Finally coming out in speaking that protests are fine, just dont break the law. Do you see that the president will have to make some modifications before election day . To either secure or win over new votes ahead of election day on this issue well, i mean, hes already behind the scenes, changed and he has moved trying to find a resolution and weve heard in the news an attempt to accelerate talks right now. So his words might differ from what the diplomacy is actually doing. And theres a lot of time still between now and the election. And if there was a big breakthrough, you could imagine the politics change quite quickly in addition to summer time, when most college kids are off campus so i dont think its impossible despite that statement to see some dramatic changes and you write this week about how this is a dangerous moment. However, for biden, when it comes to losing more young voters, explain well because this is going to be a narrow election. All indications point to that he is struggling the president in the polls. Its very close with the former president. So all these votes matter and he will need young voters in states like michigan to come out, not just to support him in nepal, but to actually come out and vote and this is the kind of issue which potentially might not turn them toward trump, but could make them decide to just not going to come out. So again, its turned out election and thats why this matters. And then just morally, he is someone who invests himself and being a uniter of the party. So he is going to try to figure out ways to bring these constituencies to the same place. Even if theres differences over policy. How do you see republicans taking advantage of this moment . Well, this fits a theme for trump. Trump in some ways as a chaos president , i think he is going to argue there is chaos in the country. Theres chaos in the campus, and hes going to bring back Richard Nixons 1960 theme, Law And Order in america this is exactly what nixon when he appeal to what he called the Silent Majority of americans who didnt support what was going on in the protests. And i imagine this is going to be central, whatever kind of variations happen in the next few months, it will be central to trumps campaign. All right. Julian zelizer, well leave it there.
