Staff Reports On Tuesday, the Federated States of Micronesia deemed its first and so far only case of COVID-19 a "historical case," meaning the individual is not sick with the virus now nor is the person at risk of spreading it to others. The person had COVID-19 in the past. “The question, then, is why he is testing positive now through PCR tests but not before?" said Dr. Eliaser Johnson, the national epidemiologist. Johnson has reached out to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for advice, but he said people can still show symptoms of COVID-19 long after the virus ends. He recommended the antigen test, set for Jan. 22, to help determine the next stage of quarantine for the crew member of the cargo ship Chief Mailo.
