The smell of smoke emanating from a 98-year-old Los Altos woman’s home Monday (July 12) attracted the attention of bystanders in her neighborhood, who called 911 and helped her escape.
No one was injured in the fire, which started in the garage of Dorothy Meyer’s home, located on the 100 block of Doud Drive near Almond School, according to the Santa Clara County Fire Department.
Although initial reports credited Meyer’s neighbors with checking on and evacuating her, some later clarified that two construction workers known only to them as Daniel and Roman were first on the scene. Meyer’s neighbor, Janet Harding, and Harding’s three grandchildren officially thanked the men and brought them fresh, home-laid chicken eggs two days after the fire.
