A divided City Council recently gave the go-ahead to make changes to the municipal code to give property owners more flexibility in having residents live in smaller residential units, called accessory dwellings, on those property ownersâ lots. The vote was 4-3, with Councilman Andre Knight making the motion for the action and Councilman Reuben Blackwell seconding. Councilmen Richard Joyner and T.J. Walker voted yes. Councilman Lige Daughtridge, who wanted a postponement for the time being to allow for more research by the city, voted no. Councilman W.B. Bullock and Councilwoman Chris Miller also voted no. The item was brought up and discussed extensively during the Dec. 14 council work session and subsequent council regular meeting.
