Continuing Coverage: Coronavirus in WisconsinSome parents are now trying to shift their kids back to virtual classes.Masks have been synonymous with schools everywhere since in-person classes returned.But in recent weeks, with COVID-19 vaccinations increasing, that is starting to change. Elmbrook parents suddenly found out in an email Monday night that masks are now optional.Katie Strelka said she found out at 5 p.m.Though the school board voted to implement the mask requirement, it was undone by the district administrator without a board vote.Strelka called it a slap in the face.She just sent her first-grade student back to Swanson Elementary after spring break with the assurance masks would be required for the rest of the school year."I don't even know, what do I do? I force my son to virtual? He doesn't want to do that anymore. I don't want to do that anymore," Strelka said. "Seventeen days are left. I fail to understand how there can be that much urgency around it."The Elmbrook School District offered no explanation.But the school board president told WISN 12 while he agreed with the change, parents should've been given more time to adjust."I think it's always best to give our families time to make decisions. And educational decisions reside with the families," Scott Wheeler said. "So anything we can do in the future to give them the time they need to make arrangements and prepare, would be better."Other school districts are dealing with the same issue.There's a rally Tuesday night in the Kettle Moraine School District.
