It like eastern on cspan. S. A. Miller covers the white house and policy for the Washington Times in the u. S. Senate. Coming this week we will see something weve not seen in a while for the majority leader saying whoever gets to 60 wins onset immigration debate. What in practical terms does that mean . S. A. well, that means any bill that is put up has to have a shot at becoming the immigration bill and it needs 60 votes with a a blank bill, a shell and on wednesday, they will start taking votes on bills that would that, substitution amendments, they call them. And everyone will have a shot. I am sure now, it is unclear how many bills that will be, but i am sure there will be several. S. A. let me reference a headline of yours this past week. Doubts raised over Senate Meeting immigration bill deadline. Your kinds of doubts . We see Lindsey Graham in the photo. What can you tell us . Bill that is a group of about 30 senators. Bipartisan group the commonsense , caucus. Theyre trying to come up with a deal that satisfies both sides. And it just, you know, it is tough going. It is tough going to find changes to Legal Immigration rules that the president wants to see changed. Such an event like the diversity lottery and restricting or limiting the familybased chain migration policies. You know, it is hard to get people all on the same table. They have got something they are kicking around in there which i dont know they will satisfy the white house. They seem to limit the amount of money they are willing to put up for a border wall, which is a sticking point. It is tough going for them. S. A. you mentioned the white house proposal. They had the opening a couple of details on that white house immigration proposal would add 25 billion for a border wall. It called for a path to citizenship for some 1. 8 million immigrants. It would limit, as you mentioned, the family sponsored Migration Program the socalled , chain migration, and it will end the visa lottery program. Of all the details in the white house proposal, what do you think is their top priority . Bill i think Border Security and money for a border wall is one of the top things. That is one of the reasons some folks have been looking for a kind of a fallback position which would be that the smallest bill, i guess you would call it, would be something that gets some kind of legal status. Maybe even short of a path to citizenship, maybe a continuation of the daca program which is basically kind of a Guest Worker Program for the dreamers. 1. 8 millionand then provides like one year or three years of funding for the border wall which would be like, you know, maybe 5 billion or 6 billion. Instead of the 25 billion they want to put in the trust fund. S. A. in terms of the bill in terms of the senate debate, they have a couple of deadlines. They got the president s day holiday coming up before too long. And then you write about this day march 5. , why is that a key day for immigration . S. A. march 5 is when the phaseout that takes full effect for the daca. Basically the deportation amnesty that the Obama Administration put into place that will be challenged in court. So when that runs out, those roughly not the 1. 8 million that is the group of people we are talking more like 690,000 people who have signed up in the daca program, the Illegal Immigrants that came to the u. S. As minors. They have lived here. Now they are adults and have signed up for the daca protection. Once march 5 comes, they pretty much lose that protection, and they would be subject to deportation should they come into contact with i. C. E. Bill one more quick thing assuming the senate finishes , work, if they finish and a bill comes out of the senate, what do we know about what the house will do . S. A. well, that is a tough one too. House Speaker Paul Ryan has said that he is only going to take up a bill that the president will sign, which is kind of limiting some of the options on the democrat side. Theyre pushing for a free will debate like the senate is about to take up next week. I am sure your viewers saw nancy pelosi with her magic minute on the floor for eight hours yesterday, demanding, you know, that they get that kind of a process in the house. So how that eventually gets handled remains to be seen, but for now it looks like it will do it will be whatever comes out of the senate is most likely to be the bill in the house. S. A.
