CSPAN The Communicators Technology And Congress July 14, 2024

For nine years, we have over their 2040 and we want to we 2040more than was this your idea . No, it was actually his idea. Creativity. Y and samsung of tomorrow. We are so happy to showcase. No, it was actually his idea. Issues in their communities that they want to solve, empowerment, [indiscernible] in North Carolina, virginia, and missouri. To donate, and also how does that involve samsung . For samsung, Stem Education is very important. Samsung is one of the worlds biggest companies. We felt that science, technology, energy, and math is sometimes boring in the classroom, but when kids get in the community, it brings it to reality. Every year we have amazing local issues that the kids apply science and math two. As a a great way for us, company, to support innovation and math and to get people excited to get more kids excited about science. What are some of the Public Policy issues that you are currently working on . A lot of it is getting more kids interested in stem. Making sure the programs are in place. We talk about workforces for the and how do we equip kids and even adults to have the skills. When we look at 5g coming into the workplace and the future of connectivity with 5g wireless. Where samsung is a big leader, what does that mean for future skill set. So how do we Blend Technology , along with Skill Development . Thats a big focus. Is the u. S. Behind when it comes to Stem Education . The u. S. Does fall behind compared to other countries in Stem Education around the world, so we like to use it as a Beacon Program so we can encourage others to think about Community Impact and how to drive change. And giving them the skills they need to make that happen. Connecting those dots. What is your background . How did you get into Government Relations . For me, it is the idea of marrying math and music, the technology and Science Behind how everything gets done with Community Change and social impact. What has been the response from your school . They welcome the program. It allows them to be creative and engage with their communities. It encourages them to find , nots that are relevant just in a textbook, but to come up with solutions. And then way, up with an idea that is workable. We are going to go meet some of the students. Thanks for your time. Now we want to introduce you to olivia and patia of Deep Creek Middle School in chesapeake, virginia. What are you doing on capitol hill . We are presenting the project we did. [indiscernible] there are kids who are uninsured. We are making it easier for them. As for the website, basically there are two buttons on the app. It will bring you to a [indiscernible] and you can fill that out, and it will basically send in a mail and email regarding what you need. The same thing with the website. Ok, this is the website, though . Yes. And now hunter is joining us. Where did the three of you come up with this idea . Many students at our school were struggling to look at the board or kept squinting. We were like, are you ok, do you need our help . It turns out they could not get glasses because they had no insurance, or they just thought it was normal. Like, our teammate, the one in red in that picture, he thought it was normal that he had to squint all the time, but it turns out his eyesight was very bad. We helped him get the glasses he needed. When it comes to technology, what did you guys do to develop this website . Olivia the website is based in dragon, so it makes it very intuitive for students to create a website of their own, and it is completely free. All you had to do is drag elements like buttons and text boxes and pictures, and you can link those and take you to another page. Like the donation form. That sends you an email. You should also note that you can download the app off our website right here. Are you a Science Teacher . Yes. Is this kind of technology becoming ubiquitous in classrooms. I have no idea about this. The students lead on the technology in this project. It was the students idea to develop this website and to reach out on social media to spread the news for our program. They really understand it. It is intuitive, and they use it every day, and now they are using it to help students. Did you find yourself learning from these students . Perhaps, somebody to who did not grow up wellversed with technology . Indeed. I learned a lot as far as developing the app and website and using it to help other students. Technology is integral in their lives, and now they are using it to help other students. Do the three of you worry , having grown up with technology, do you worry about things like being hacked or privacy, any of those types of issues . All the time, and even Something Like going into a hotel, i was instantly worried about our personal devices on the wifi. Getting hacked. When you connect to that and Everybody Knows the password, it is very easy to access your device. I was freaking out about it. It is a very dangerous thing in the wrong hands, but it can do Amazing Things in the right hands. What about you ladies . I worry a little bit. It is part of life. But i know now that wherever i go, my phone is secure, so i dont have to worry that much. But if it is somewhere i dont know and it is over the wifi, i start to freak out a little bit, but i have learned to calm myself. Website, i have never really thought about getting hacked ever, but [indiscernible] it is good to be cautious. So i dont really worry. Do you guys spend too much time on the screen . Probably. Probably. Well, congratulations. On your win. Once again if somebody wants to , do this, what is the best website . On our part, as you can see, we will have a link to our website. Sightfortomorrow. Wixsite. Com where helping kids in the community and we can accept donations from anywhere. Another Winning Group from the samsung competition, from Owensville High School in missouri. Where is owensville. It is an hour and a half west of st. Louis, in the middle of nowhere. What is your invention that you brought to samsung . Our device is geared towards School Shootings and schooling school shooters. We created a door lock that will be on the outside of the door. It can be put into place whenever you need it. To help put that image in your mind, there will be one bracket on the door itself and one on the doorframe. Whenever the door is closed and there is a shooter in the building [lock clicks] that locke will slide in. That locke will be kept near the door, or the teacher will even have it on hand. Even if it is the handle or the lock in place on the door that is broken, our lock will be attached. Intact. Where is the technology for this, since you are doing this for samsung . Was that the hardware . We actually started making this thing before we actually knew about the samsung competition. We had to try to get the project rolling before samsung actually had anything to do with it. We were at this stage by the time we applied. What was your role, jonah . We had a technical role for me, called the visibility specialist. Basically what that means is to make sure everything is going ok, to plan things out, and to go through with them. Have you thought about connecting this with an app on the phone, so that if you could, you could hit the app and block and lock the door . Have you taken it to that stage . We actually dont want to take it to that stage. We want to keep this very simple. There not have anything is nothing complex about it. You slide it in, and thats all you have to do. There is not a lot to it. We went for that simplicity. It is very fast. You dont have to worry about any extra outside factors. Well, thank you and congratulations. Thank you. Three more Award Winners on the communicators this week. This is jasper, carolyn, and see me. What did you win a prize for . The contest was to make something that would help our community, and we ended up deciding on school bus safety. Thats what we did. We made a sign what we did is we made a sign that im sorry, what . A wireless transmitter on the bus as well as the phone. There is an app that the bus drivers use. Hang on, we will get to that app in just a minute. So this contraption is in the sign, is that correct . No, this is on the bus. This is on the bus. And you have an app here, right, jasper . Jasper yes. This sd is connected to the phone, and when the bus driver clicks on this app that they download to their android device, they click what county they are, what school they are, and then they select their schools route. Then they click start route, and what they do is the route if you click start route, it pulls up google maps, and google maps will give them directions to where they are supposed to go, and the google maps will help with distances. The xd connected to the phone uses a wireless signal that tells what color lights to turn on it. What happens on the sign once the driver connects to the app . The wireless signal will be sent containing the gps s of the bus and the route that the driver is taking that day, and the sign receives that information and since it to an arduino microcontroller, and the arduino microcontroller will see if the bus is supposed to stop, and if it is, the light will flash at certain distances. At 400 feet, the lights will flash yellow, and at 200 feet the lights will strobe yellow. Can we do that again . I want bob to be able to see the flashing lights as well. So we are at 400 feet at 400 feet, the lights flash yellow. At 200 it just did a nice job flashing. And then at 30 feet, the lights will flash red. When the bus moves away, the lights will turn off. Why is it important to turn the lights on the sign . The lights main purpose is to alert motorists who are behind the bus or in front of the bus, letting them know the bus is stopping, and that the bus is going to stop. And also, kids who are at the bus stop when their bus has arrived, and also if there is a substitute bus driver who does not know their route as well, it tells them where the bus stop is so they know where to drop their kids off. Have any members of congress, come over to see you guys and look at their invention . Yes, there have been a few members of congress that have come over tonight, and we met with a few members earlier today. And told them about our invention. What do they think . It. Hey were excited about representative, jackie, of indiana is trying to pass a bill on school safety. The lights will flash yellow and then strobe yellow. At 30 feet, the lights will flash red. And when the bus pulls away, the lights will turn off. Who was your advisor on this project . Ms. Charlene. Now what does she teach . This is our Science Teacher. Hello. What are you finding, with the Digital Natives like these kids. It is a different world . It is a different world. They are not afraid to find the answers. They are very innovative and think outside the box much more than adults. And these three kids came up with this project . We have 19 kids on our team, so these three kids and we had three others continuing in new york. They are all very excited and supportive. Did your school receive an award from samsung . Yes we received one hundred , thousand dollars for technology as well as a Community Choice award, where your Community Votes for your project, and our community had the most votes. We won that 100,000 reward for that. Well, congratulations. Thank you. This is Holly Grove Middle School in holly springs, North Carolina. Thank you all. And now, on the communicators, we want to introduce you to lorraine trump piney. What do you do for a living . Lorraine trapani. I worked for ibm in government regulatory affairs. But thats not why you are here on the hill tonight, is it . No, i am a volunteer puppy raiser for guiding eyes for the blind, and the mission is to provide guide dogs to the visually impaired. Ibm is working with guiding eyes to develop a smart collar that will help to provide an update enough data to help them understand why some dogs can be seeingeye dogs and why some dogs cant. So it is not a collar that tells a dog what to do. Right. You are getting an objective set of data, that tells you how the dog is responding to stress and the environment, for example. We are in any we are in a crowded, warm, noisy room. And it jake is able to relax. Not every dog could do that. The information collected by the smart collar, will recognize the environment, compare it to data on hundreds of other dogs, and then figure out, what are the patterns, and what can we do to replicate that an increase that. So were talking about Artificial Intelligence . Yes exactly. And this is Artificial Intelligence that benefit society in a good way. Well hello. Can we see what is on her neck there . Let me bring her around. No problem. Ok. Is it transmitting, in a sense . And it is transmitting data to the cloud, real. As she moves. You can see. Ok, the screen over here. If she were unsettled, you would see a lot of movement. That is not necessarily a good thing. You want her to be like this. You want the screen to look like that . Yes. Will center over to me again, while bob sheetzs screen, and lets see what happens while screen,ts video of the and let us see what happens. We are looking at a Mountain Range now. And that is not a good thing . If we are looking for a dog that is calm in a busy environment like this, that might indicate looking at this over a. , kate was state looking at this over a. Of time, kate was stationary and calm despite the humidity and pressure in the room. Who came up with this idea . Was this your idea . Raiser iolunteer puppy make raised poppies that made it and those who did not. Did you have a sense of it when they are young . All of the puppies in the program have the potential to make it as guide dogs. Nurture. Ure versus they have to have the potential, and a match of the right raiser, who brings out the puppies qualities. Then, some poppies would not make it no matter what. Help e trying to there are some puppies who would make it no matter what. So we are trying to find out what guides them. A puppy raiser, trying to increase the success rate for guide dogs and knowing, for myself, that i spend a year or more with some of these great dogs, and some have not made it. Senior director of genetics at ibm talked about analyzing. Ll of the data for a small nonprofit, they didnt have the resources. I asked if they had ever tried watson . On then some data for us free version and love it. We went to ibm, and transfer data onto the ibm cloud. That made it available for analysis. We started working with North Carolina state university, which had worked on another project. Together, we developed the smart collar. There was a priest or a precursor to this, a band worn by puppies. It monitors heart rate. Quickly returns to normal when the puppy goes through a series of stressful tasks. That might be under footing that is unusual, like the marble halls of congress. And you hear the clipclop of heels, that could be a distraction. Rateuickly the heart returns to normal is an indication of the dogs ability to handle stress. You have got a running heart rate right there, that is fantastic. From ibm and guiding eyes for the blind. Thank you kate. Watching the communicators on cspan.
