Business of the Convention Still here in charlotte. We are not sure what that means. May be the actual nominations will happen here. It is all kind of up in the air and people are still talking. There are contracts involving the city and the convention and visitors bureau, even the charlotte hornets. There still a lot of talking to go on. What about the reaction within the Hospitality Industry banking on a lot of people coming in and a lot of revenue for the region . Jim definitely. The Hospitality Industry is looking at this like a lifeline. There is no doubt they have had a rocky two or three months. Lost business, restaurants have been boarded up or closed, in fact, with news of the convention leaving there was one business we had a story on this morning that is closing because that was the last straw for them. It was a business downtown not far from the Spectrum Center where the convention would have been held. Thisesses are looking at as a lost opportunity and the Host Committee of the convention is still trying to negotiate and bring people together and work out some kind of a deal where they can still salvage something of this convention. What is the reaction within the community . Are they blaming the governor . The president . Mostly republicans are blaming the governor. He has pretty much stuck to his guns on opening and he just does not believe, at this point, he can give a guarantee they could build the arena with 19,000 people in august with no social distancing and no masks. The president made that request in a phone call to the governor the friday before memorial day it appears to have been the president said he was holding out for guaranty of a closed convention and the governor said we cannot do that. The governor is gradually opening the state like other governors around the states and he could not given the guaranty. A couple of days later the president tweeted they were moving. Lets talk about the politics of North Carolina. As you look at the returns from four years ago with donald trump winning nearly 50 of the vote, it is become a battleground state over the last two campaign cycles. Why . Jim North Carolina is a battleground state. It is a purple state. Democrats and republicans are relatively evenly divided. Carriesesident trump North Carolina sodas governor does Governor Cooper. They have had a lot of redistricting challenges. Redistricting is almost an annual event here. Affect the balance in the legislature this year, we are not sure, but North Carolina is pretty evenly balanced. Some of the losses involving redistricting have shown that even while republicans were winning the general assembly, democrats got more votes for congress the same year. It is a pretty balanced state. Cities are getting bigger and more democratic and the rural areas are getting a little bit better. When you look at the political demographics of North Carolina what is the swing area in between states . Jim i think the swing area are ee suburbs right now and xurban counties. Some of the closed end suburbs are trending democratic and charlotte and where raleigh is. Those counties have virtually no republican legislators anymore. I think the swing counties and areas are in the suburbs. Charlotte has seen a remarkable change over the last 2030 years. Prettyarlotte used to be balanced in terms of representation on the city council and county commission. It was not that long ago republicans dominated the city council or city commission, but that does not happen anymore. The county commission is all democratic, city council has two republicans left, but the county has been trending more and more democratic. The all eyes are on North Carolina with Competitive Senate races. What are you looking at . Jim it is a very Competitive Senate race. Facing democrat i think that is going to be a competitive race. North carolina is one of the states that will make a big difference if you control the senate, whether the republicans keep the majority or not. It is a state democrats are targeting in the senate. Democrats are almost guaranteed to pick up two new seats. Democrats are going to pick up two more seats giving them a total of five in North Carolina. There may be another seat that is competitive, at least democrats hope it is, and that is the eighth district. We will see. North carolina is going to become a competitive state, a swing state, in the battle for congress. [indiscernible] skepticismfacing from his own party. Opponent whorimary went after him from the right. He dropped out early on, he spent a lot of money to help the senator. I think some republicans have always been a little wary of him. The senator tried to back away from the president over some powers the president wanted heard there was an oped in the Washington Post saying he was going to go his own way and be independent on the president on this issue. He backed off that and ended up voting with the president. Has brought skepticism from republicans and he has made any roads with the independent base. Lets bring it back to the convention and republicans across the state. If the rnc does move to another city, do you think the president will pay a price in november . Jim not really. I dont think just because of that. I think republicans are trying to put the blame on Governor Cooper for that. Matterednow that it much to a lot of people in North Carolina other than the business community. I think it mattered to republicans who thought it would volunteers boost in and generating excitement for the senate race, but i do not think it is enough that it would really cost the president much in North Carolina.
