To the iowa state fair. Lets welcome governor kim reynolds and governor doug burgum gov. Reynolds good morning and welcome to day two of the fairside chats. It is great to have you here as we interview republican president ial candidates. Today, i am happy to be joined by an entrepreneur, very successful businessman and the Current Governor of north dakota , doug burgum. Give a couple of opening comments. Gov. Burgum thanks to you and your whole team. We have known each other for six years through the republican governors association. She is currently the chair and is super effective and focuses on driving great policy and elected republican governors. Republican governors are getting it done in america right now. Give it up for governor reynolds. Gov. Reynolds thank you, i appreciate that. I grew up in a small town. You grew up in a small town. Talk a little bit about how that has impacted your life. Gov. Burgum i grew up in arthur, north dakota, 300 people. We did not even have a paved street. It was gravel roads. Growing up there everything was great. You learn all the things you need to do, integrity, responsibility, hard rock work. When i was a freshman, my dad who was a world war ii veteran passed away and my mom had to go back to work. A widow with three kids and i got to see mom having to make the mortgage. Between my mom and my dad, from my dad i learned about service and sacrifice. From my mom, she was such a rock. Gov. Reynolds it is an incredible story. North dakota and iowa have done a great job in helping make in America Energy independent. You have brought a new wave of oil and gas production. It feels like every single day the Biden Administration is doing everything they can to undo the great work that is being done. As president come what would you do to regain our Energy Independence for decades to come . Gov. Burgum first day, the number one thing, we would start to the energy to our friends and allies. Stop by from our adversaries. Buying it from our adversaries. Iowa is the superpower of ethanol and biofuels. North dakota is one of the Largest Energy producing states. The Biden Administrations Energy Policy was designed by china. If you are trying to go all electric, it is a war on liquid fuels. It is a war on america and manufacturing and everybody who drives a vehicle. It makes no sense because if you care about the environment, you would want to have every ounce of Energy Produced here because we produce a cleaner and safer than anybody else in the world. We are in a cold with china. They are already using export limitations with minerals to put sanctions on japan. We cannot be dependent on china for the energy in our future. We have a chance to be energy dominant, we could be up energy superpower. Could be an energy superpower. We had antony blinken, janet yellen over there and they did not bring up energy. They are too busy trying to kill the energy industry. Gov. Reynolds thank you for being so vocal on that. [applause] we also asked iowans to submit some questions for candidates. Ray wants to know what with the expiration of the farm bill, what are the most important issues we should be focused on . Gov. Burgum the second part is a challenge, working with congress. In terms of agriculture, this is food security. You cannot have National Security without food security. When i look at the Biden Administration, we need an 180 degrees turn. We have the highest Interest Rates in 22 years and that affects our massively. We have the debt rating which just got lowered a couple of weeks ago. That will affect all of you and all of our grandchildren. That was a horrible piece of news. On National Security, we have to make sure we are in a position, we are the food superpower. China imports the food every day. We have a chance as the American Farmers to be given the level Playing Field and outperform everybody in the world. I know that from people in my hometown. I grew up with farmers. They can outperform anybody if given a level Playing Field. We have to make sure we are competitive. Agriculture is a Global Economic engine. Gov. Reynolds every single policy they pass i feel is an attack on america and the American People. I am so proud that iowa farmers produce 10 of the nations food supply. Everything you just talked about impacts the farmers who work day and night to make sure we feed and fuel the world. I am going to switch gears a little bit. Iowa is pretty far away from the southern border. North dakotas far too. You recently sent the north Dakota National guard to texas. I think you just got back from the border. Can you talk a little bit about that and why you sent troops to the border . Can you talk about the impact it has on our states . Gov. Burgum absolutely and thank you by stepping up to support Governor Abbott. 110,000 Overdose Deaths in our country. Those are statistics you cannot even comprehend. 300 americans per day are dying of overdoses. 70 are fentanyl poisoning. The majority of that is coming from the southern border. We are taking massive casualties every day. We are losing 300 people per day. It took biden two years to get to the southern border. The 10th amendment says the federal government has certain responsibilities, the rest is returned to the states or to the people. Gov. Reynolds he is not doing his constitutional duty. Gov. Burgum Governor Abbott is working to control the border. We have two sets of National Guard down there. They are managing helicopter flights. Another group is helping specifically in texas. When i was down there, over my shoulder there were people weaving across the rio grande and i was getting questions about the swamp in d. C. About indictments while there were people crossing the river. The Border Patrol, there is only 20,000, the positions are not filled. They went into Law Enforcement to do Law Enforcement, they are just doing paperwork. We are spending tens of millions of a month to do the process of moving these folks into our country. Meanwhile, they do not have the equipment to do their job. There is 20,000 Border Patrol for the whole country. Gov. Reynolds how many irs agents did they bring in . Gov. Burgum 80 7000, 4 times the Border Patrol. If you give them the technology, the staffing, they will be able to do the job. When i was talking to the Border Control people, they said they have done it before. Gov. Reynolds i do not think the American People know, Governor Abbott sent a request to consider sending National Guard troops to help. They had already allocated money to do what the federal government should be doing. Think about that. What states are being asked to do because this administration will not do their job. It is ridiculous. We talked a little bit about china. The fentanyl is coming from china. The National Security threat that it poses. We have to figure out a way to stop that. Gov. Burgum this was not my first trip to the border. The one sector we were in, 98 Different Countries citizens had crossed in first six months. This is not just people coming over from mexico. Syrians, iranians, north koreans, russians, chinese. People on terrorist watch lists. On the others across the river, the cartels are Transnational Criminal Organizations that are well funded. In one little sector we were in, they were estimating families said they estimated in one week the cartels had made 20 billion in fees explaining to people trying to get into this country. They are better funded on this side that side. It is a complete abdication, dereliction of duty to not be doing the job, which is National Security. Gov. Reynolds what are some things you have learned as governor of the state of north dakota and as a Business Owner that you could take some of those advantages to washington, d. C. And implement the first 100 days . Gov. Burgum the one thing we did in north dakota was say we are going to treat taxpayers like customers. If you are the customer, we should treat you like a customer. If we had 157 different websites and you got a Fishing License and a hunting license, your kids go to school, you have a daughter going to one of our universities, you are paying taxes, you have 150 seven different places to go. You interact with anybody else, you do single sign on. They would be like i want to get a Fishing License. We would be like, who argued . Enter in all of your information. The government is so far behind. I think 1020 of every job we found in north dakota is some soul sucking work that federal employees have to do that they do not want to do. Think about Law Enforcement, highway patrol. There are state employees and they get burned for all of this redtape. We went after redtape. We crowd sourced ideas from the public. We took 1. 7 billion out of the federal general fund budget. There are so much waste in government. We need somebody who has a business background and Technology Background who can say here is how we can change all of this. Creating jobs that have purpose and getting other people back to the private sector where we have 10 million jobs open. Gov. Reynolds it can be done, right . We cut 21 agencies. It is amazing when you start looking under the hood the number of inefficiencies that are there. We need a Business Owner that can go in there. He needs to start on day one. I appreciate what you are saying. What is something the people in washington dc do not really understand about life in places like north dakota and iowa . Gov. Burgum take anything that the Biden Administration does, most of it is on page 12 or 18 because they are pushing indictments, but this other stuff they are doing through executive orders, we have a fulltime job as governors, we are the tip of the spear suing the federal government. We have to say this is not legal. They think we are going to buy solar panels from china. We are going to buy batteries from china where they are tearing up the congo. We have to move 500,000 pounds of earth in a different country to get enough material to make one battery that we are going to subsidize. And then they are going to shut down all the baseload. There is nothing that makes sense about the electrical policy of this administration. When they start coming at north Dakota Farmers and saying this is what you should do with their land, nobody cares more for the land and the water and the air than the people who live on it. When you have a bureaucrat in washington trying to tell you what you can do on your land, that makes no sense. We have to get the power back to the states and the states have to get the power back to the people. Gov. Reynolds how many of you wake up every day and wonder what insane thing the Biden Administration is going to do that flies in the face of common sense . Common sense a thing of the past in washington dc. I think we are going to do the fast three. Give me one funny moment on the campaign trail. Gov. Burgum one that made us laugh out loud, during the 80s and 90s when i was i entrepreneur building a software company, there was a lot of pictures emergent of me with long hair. My kids were not around for some of this. There were like, dad, is that you . There was one magazine cover where ive hair down to here and it got posted and an analyst posted a map of the Electoral College and it was all read and they said if that is his real hair, this is the november 20 24 election. Gov. Reynolds i love it. I got to flip burgers with you and catherine yesterday. What is your favorite food that you have had were you look forward to having at the state fair . Gov. Burgum in Western North dakota, we have rattlesnakes. Ive been on a horse when a rattlesnake was causing a problem. I learned yesterday you can get rattlesnake on a stick here. Is it free range rattlesnake . I am trying to find out. I am looking for rattlesnake on a stick today. Gov. Reynolds that is something i have never tried. I will have to add it to my list of foods. What is your favorite walkout song . Gov. Burgum ben gallagher, every small town. Gov. Reynolds final question. As i traveled the state, iowans tell me they want a leader for president , somebody who will stand up for america and protect our freedom. They are looking for somebody who has the moral conviction to do the right thing, the vision and resolve to deliver and start that on day one. But mostly portly, they say we want somebody who can win. Tell us why you think you are that person . Gov. Burgum we are running against joe biden and the reason we win is lets start with small town common sense. Lets talk about an understanding around technology because technology is changing every job and industry. It needs to change the government and has not been doing bad enough. The other piece is leadership. We know people love governors because governors know how to get stuff done. If there was a blizzard, we are plowing the roads. We are not about it is about getting it done. We work for everybody. Americans understand what leadership is. It is not about throwing bombs at your competitors in the private sector. If you want to pick sides, run for congress. I am an entrepreneur. I run stuff. I will never be a senator or a congressman. When you are in the executive branch, you have the opportunity to improve every american life. When we do it right, we can bring out the best in america. I think americans understand what leadership looks like and leadership is not about blaming other people. Leaders do not blame other people. They get stuff done. They actually lead. Kim and i have had jobs why am i running . Because i know that with the right leadership, we can make a difference quickly and literally every american life, not just the people who vote for you. Inflation hurts everybody in every part d. High Energy Prices hurts every buddy. Everybody. We are working for everybody. If we are going to win a cold war with china, we have to get our economy going. We have serious things to talk about and as long as we are talking about the past, that is going to be a problem. We are supporting all of the other republicans. We are going to make sure joe bidens record is part of what this campaign is about and that we can show we have a better plan to move this country forward. Gov. Reynolds thank you.
