There are 10 republicans who have publicly stated they are not going to be voting for Steve Scalise for speaker. Here they are, chip roy of texas. Marjorie Taylor Greene of georgia. Also ohios max miller. South carolinas nancy mace. George santos, n york. Lauren boebert of kro. Michael cloud of texas. Carlos gimenez of florida. Virginias bob good. And pennsylvanias lloyd smucker. All saying publicly they are not going to be voting for him. Reporters caught up with the former speaker, Kevin Mccarthy, entering the capitol today. A moment of uncertainty. A moment of chaos on capitol hill with no real speaker of the house. In fact, seeing those images of mccarthy, we, in fact, have three speakers of the house, patrick mchenry, serving as interim, speaker mccarthy, who still is speaking to reporters and acting like a speaker, with his security detail roaming the capitol. And of course the speaker nominee from the republican, Steve Scalise, who is still the majority leader, the number two republican at the moment. Working to get to that magic number as you mentioned of 217. Nbcs analysis has more than a dozen no votes for Steve Scalise to be speaker. That is a big problem for him because he can lose no more than four republicans given that they have such a narrow, narrow majority. And democrats will all rally behind their leader, Hakeem Jeffries of new york. When you talk to some of these members who are in the no column, their reasons for objecting to scalise vary from person to person. Marjorie Taylor Greene of georgia cites his health. Scott they met behind closed doors yesterday to nominate a speaker. And that vote was very close. Just 11399. Closer than perhaps many people anticipated. And jordan seemed to be in those recent days gaining more and more momentum on Steve Scalise but just couldnt quite get there to beat him in that internal election. This will be the first opportunity for republicans now to regroup to hear from Steve Scalise how he plans to overcome these enormous obstacles. Not only is he facing these dozen plus no votes, but there are perhaps another dozen who are still undecided. Others are pledging their support to jim jordan. And others are pledging their support for Kevin Mccarthy and say they will vote for mccarthy on the floor. Still smarting from last week events by matt gaetz and others to oust him from the speakership which has the republicans tearing each other apart at this moment. This will be an opportunity for republicans to hear directly from scalise how he plans to unite the conference and get everyone behind him and to get 217 votes. At the moment it doesnt appear that he is anywhere close to doing so. Who is helping Steve Scalise get these votes . And who is not . Notably who is not helping . Scott one person that we have to look toward is jim jordan. Steve scalises opponent in this speaker race, who, yesterday, told reporters that he is encouraging his supporters to get behind Steve Scalise. That he, himself, will be supporting him. He even offered to give a nominating speech on the floor for Steve Scalise. That being said, he still has, jordan does, a number of supporters who want him to be speaker of the house. Jim jordan, a very close donald trump ally, chairman of the powerful judiciary committee, former founding chairman of the very, very conservative House Freedom caucus. Somebody who has been around capitol hill for a number of years. And is a known quantity. Notably both jordan and scalise got their start in leadership as chairmen of the conservative republican study committee, the largest caucus of conservatives on capitol hill. They have that foundation at the r. S. C. I would point out, greta, there are a number of people in the capitol who have an incentive to see scalise rise to speaker of the house. There are a number of people who want to run for the majority leader position, tom emmer, the majority whip. Byron donalds. A handful of others. Kevin hern, the current chairman of the r. S. C. So they are looking for an opportunity to move up the leadership ladder. Others want to run for majority whip, number three position. And so a handful of folks have a political incentive for scalise to rise so that they can then run for other positions and move up the leadership ladder. They will be part of that whip operation for Steve Scalise to get him to that magic number
