It is a, at its purest level, an upscale super drone, yes. Fully electric. Who would pilot this . Itd be fully autonomous. So this was built as, essentially, an urban air taxi. Okay. So you would request one of these to get in, it would take you to so air uber host we want to introduce you to a Company Named omron. Mike chen. Give us a quick overview of the company. Guest okay. Were a Global Corporation that specialize in technologies that are meant to improve lives and really involve societal changes. Host and now youve got robots galore out here. Guest thats right. Host what is this . Guest this is used in a factory environment application, but this is meant to show the vision that we have where robotics are working in harmony. Host now, mike chen, when you look at this, im presuming that this is relatively Old Technology in here or not . Guest it can be applied in different ways. The technology itself is up to the user, but it can be applied in new applications as well as traditional applicationings. Host now robotics, this is a robot, correct . Guest this is a robot. Host and this young gentleman here is a robot as well . Guest that is correct. Host who is this . Guest this is bill, one of our mobile robots. Its a mobile vehicle that allows for improved productivity at the factory level. Host what does bill do . Whats his function . Guest hes meant to deliver mints at the ces show for our attendees. Host thank you, bill. Is he going to run boo me . Guest they are safety regulated so it follows all the safety standards, and this thing will not touch you. Host what kind of technology is in this . Guest its part a. I. And part motion and part traditional i. O. And control. What we do here is we innovate in the technologies around a. I. , around robotics so that is awe on autonomously navigating the map that a user sets out. So if you wanted to program it to do something, youd teach it the map, and then it actually finds its way around. Host it took my foot. It grabbed my foot. [laughter] guest there are a 270degree radius around the laser scanner, and host he doesnt like that foot there. Guest and a low level sensor as well that goes for the flooring. Host so when you talk about a. I. Being in here, the artificial intelligence, whats in that . Guest what it means is once you teach it a map, you do not tell it how to get from point a to point b, it will intelligently navigate itself to the optimal path whether there are people in place or if there are other obstacles. Host does it learn as it goes . Guest correct. It learns the best path over repetition. Host so youve told it to go from point a to point b, and you dont care how it gets there . Can it get off this white floor here . Guest it cannot, because weve also restricted it for the ces show. Theres lots of people here, weve restricted it to the area of our booth. Host but you could program it to go across hall here. Guest absolutely. Host wait, who is this . Guest this is our catering robot built on the same platform that you saw earlier. The base model is all the same. The same Safety Technology around it so it can see its surrounding, but this custom on top could be more more applications host such as water. Guest water, etc. Host where are these used . Guest in a factory or in hotel environments. Of we actually have one of these at an airport where it is actually helping people with disabilities to get their luggage and take it to their [inaudible] for them. Host will you see omron products in hospitals . Guest we do. So theres another version of in that we can go to now or go to later. Give me an example, right . Theres a lot of pharmaceuticalses, of course, being for specific access to nurses, theres and the patient. There are models of the mobile Robot Technology than securely deliver pharmaceuticals to that person with a rf id tag to make sure that the right person is taking right pharmaceuticals. What else are you demonstrating . Guest quite a few technologies. We have the trend of mass customization. Not just mass production of products anywhere, but our Consumers Want technology to be personal. Personal to the consumer when its Automotive Technologies or a. I. Technologies. This is very applicable in the manufacturing space because of of traceability. We want, we want all of our products made custom for us now, right . All the Technology Working just for us. So as an example, if you wanted something personalizedded, this would be a Laser Engraver that uses bar code technologies in this case to burn a custom pingpong ball just for you. Host oh, thats awesome. [laughter] so a couple years ago at this show 3d printing was a big thing. Guest right. And we have used at as well within the design of the application. The overall purpose were trying to show is humans and technology do mix, right, and the Human Element is not lost on us. Our whole philosophy is the machine did the work and people the thrill of creation. Host whats your day job . Guest im the engineering manufacturing for the automation manager for the automation sector, and i interact with customers, what their needs are from a company like omron corporation. Host so you have an engineering degree. Guest i do. Host you think parts and, you know guest i do sometimes, right. Host is it mostly online anymore or via the computer . Guest i believe the interface is natural now to interact with technology through a computer, but the thought process, Human Element is very important rain how a customer interacts with our technology, thats still very human way to think about technology. Guest this is the first it is a very long acronym that i do not care, but overall orr my yous was the god of inspiration, and this is a perfect illustration of what were trying to show here, the technology becoming a harmony between human and machine. As it learns the player, it improves the game of the player so that the player can get as many rallies as possible. This is the first of its kind tutor. Its a robot that improves and expands the capability of humans. Host , so, mike chen, whats the purpose . Guest it is a tutor robot for pingpong. Host are we allowed to play in. Host again, whats the Practical Application of this . Guest we are not here to sell pingpong robots. What were here to show our audience as well as other companies around here that every business here are businesses that we want to do business with. The technology is what we represent on the vision of harmony between the human and machines. This robot can be absolutely applied in an industrial field sorry, this type of technology can be applied in an industrial field and the Sensing Technology can be applied to Driver Safety in vehicles which is the display here. And theres multiple applications in multiple different industries. Host well, lets look at the Driver Safety. Guest okay, please. This is a different application of very similar technology. Host okay. Guest same amount of facial recognition. Right. So facial recognition and learning the user. Host what are we seeing on the screen up theresome. Guest what youre seeing here is eye tracking. Eye tracking as well as pupil tracking. Because unbeknownst to us as humans, right . We actually have [inaudible] of course ocular reflex which means that almost two minutes before we know were tired, were going to start losing coordination between our pupils and our head movements. Host okay. That said guest that said, if you start to get drowsy, if you start to be incapacitated, the technology can detect that, and an automaker can create different type of autonomous driving reactions to that. Host now, my cartels me im car tells me im getting tired. Is that this type of technology . Guest it is absolutely the same, thats right. The ocular reflex, that is something that innovation where its not just looking at blinks, because blinks you can change. You can change how often you blink, right . But the Early Detection, the Early Detection of your reaction speed, that part is where we host so this is really kind of an amazing display when we see i think on then screen. Guest if the correlation is high, thats good. That means as youre bouncing around, right depending on what youre driving on, right . You should stay focused. That ratio should be high. Host are Car Companies integrating this today . Guest we keep the confidence of our customer base, but this technology our technologys in 500 million devices worldwide at this point whether they be automotive or even digital devices in your pocket, cell phones and the like. Host so does this lead toward with Autonomous Vehicles . Guest correct. Host is this something that autonomy guest they can use our technology for that purpose, absolutely. Host so, mike chen, what kind of people work at omron . Are you all electrical, mechanical engineers . Guest no, were looking for a lot of different types of people. What we are passionate about is technology and applying that to societal challenges. And the people here are engineers, mechanical, a. I. , electrical engineers and also people that support. Host are you finding theres enough people in the u. S. And well, worldwide. Youre a japanese company. Are you finding that there are enough people qualified to work at omron . Guest yeah. We have a lot of investment currently in the americas. We are a Global Corporation. We have engineers from all around the world, europe, asia as well as the united united st. Guest were most known for our consumer quad copters, but over the last year or two people have started using this Ground Breaking technology, putting it to work in a wide variety of areas whether its professional filling making and Television Production or agriculture. Host now, you did not use the word drone, and we all know it by the word drone. Guest sure. Yeah. Most people call it drones but, basically, we dont think necessarily about the flying aspect, were thinking about what it does for people, about imaging capture. Host so what are we see anything the cage here . Guest ing guest this is the newest version of our flagship consumer product. It folds down to about the size of a water bottle, has a 4k camera onboard, and the upgrades that we released to it last year making it about 60 quieter. So you notice its pretty quiet. We could have a normal conversation while its behind me. Host what would that be used for . Is that just for recreation . Guest we see it being used for a wide variety of cases. Most people use it for travel or family photography, we see it being used for weddings or real estate, but were also seeing it being used for some other professional applications like power line inspection. Rather than having to go up and down in a cherry picker and driving, you can just fly down the line and look out for some errors on the line. Host how many drones are out there flying around the world right now in. Guest good question. The faa has estimates, you know, we think that is a really dc trs or its a new field, and not everybody has an estimation, but its in the millions. Host in the millions . Guest oh, absolutely. Host regulation of drones. Is this a big eshoo that you all issue that you all are facing . Guest yeah, you know, the good news is that regulators and manufacturers like dji are on the same page. We want pretty much the same things, protecting people in the air, people on the ground, and we also want to make sure that the skies are open for innovation. New technological category if you restrict the amount of people who have access to it or the places where they can access it, its not going to reach its full potential. So working together with regulators, we hope to meet those two goals. Host now, whos controlling this right now . Is it the gentleman back there in the cage guest thats right. Host whos driving it . Guest got a camera host looking at us right now. Guest thats right. Host how advanced is the technology . Guest the camera onboard the platform is about the equivalent of an action camera, similar sensor. Its also a wide angle. So the amount that can actually capture finish. Finish [inaudible] host do you have to be licensed by the faa to fly one of these . Guest so it depends. Right now the faa has just restudented a rule that would cause you restudented a rule that would reinstituted a rule that would require you to register. If you want to start making money using the drone, then you have to go through a certification process. Then youre able to start putting the technology to work. Host weve been hearing about Drone Deliveries. Guest yeah. Host is that a reality in the future . Guest you know, the potential of Drone Deliveries is really exciting, being able to instantly access, you know, goods wherever you are. Theres a combination of a regulatory and technological challenge thats going to prevent that or provide roadblocks before full implementation happens. In terms of the technology, you need longer [inaudible] the ability for beyond visual line of sight safely and reliably. And then on the regulatory side, you know, flying through cities over people are still highly restricted. You cannot fly beyond visual line of sight right now. And fully awe on the poised flight is also restricted in various ways. So there are some challenges between where the technology is and where some Companies Want it to be, but the potential is there. Host okay. Now, i saw a bigger drone. We can walk over guest yeah, of course. Host how long does it take to learn how to fly like that gentleman is in the cage . Guest well, you know [inaudible] new orleans the same. More or less the same, its really making sure youre mitigating against the risks. [inaudible] ready to fly before you get it up in the air. And then also operational. So making sure that youre not flying close to people, flying close to infrastructure. You tell people maybe to stand back. Pretty basic, it becomes Second Nature after youve gotten used to the technology. Host are they selfstabilizing . Guest yes. Actually, inside the box is the brains of the drone s and thats actually where dji started. From that we built Everything Else that you see right here from the stabilization platforms and in some cases even the cameras onboard the system to make sure that the entire flying experience is as painless as possible. Host now, this is a good size ised drone. Sized drone. Guest it depends on the configuration, they can go up to 10 is, 12,000. Host and what would this be used more . Guest this is really for professional applications. Weve got a [inaudible] camera, upwards of 30,000. And this is really used for detailed work. Mapping is a big application for a drone like this. Youre able to get really detailed maps in a fraction of the time that it would take you to use satellite or other Aerial Imaging host now, can you, could you webcast live with a drone . Guest yeah, absolutely. Even our consumer platforms are able to pull down a live feed from up to seven kilometers away, and it shows up on your phone in realtime.
