CSPAN2 Peter Copeland Finding The News July 13, 2024

And now on cspan2s booktv more television for serious readers. Peter copeland is author of a new book called finding the news. He was a journalist for over 40 years. At the time he was a war correspondent and then covering National Politics in washington, d. C. Whats the difference . National politics in washington, d. C. , about the same. I pretty much covered politics everything in washington for 14 years when i was a bureau attribute achieve. The difference between being a war correspondent for the many years you were an coming over here and covering National Politics in washington, the largest differences between the two . The stakes are a lot higher when youre covering the war. People who talk about the war and its a battle and its not really. Its just an argument among likeminded people. Its a lot more dangerous for everybody when youre covering a real war. You are with Scripps Howard service managers. You started in chicago. Talk about your beginnings. I started as a night beat reporter with four dates attorney. I didnt have journalism background. I fell into it by accident, but from his very first story i loved it and thats all i wanted to do. I kept doing it for 40 years. What have you seen change in the 40 years . Has anything changed or has peoples perception of the media change . That technology is the big driver of change. I started on a manual typewriter with a teletype machine that people dont even know what that is anymore. The news values i believe are the same and thats what about the book about, that either accuracy, speed and fairness. Those three things are still what drives quality journalists. Do you consider those essential generals practices . They are the core values. Theyre not always the practices that sometimes we get away from our values and we cheat on them. Social media i would say the speed of news right now it makes it easier to cheat on our values, as long as we remember speed, accuracy, fairness can stick to that and we would be fine. The term fake news has become popular. People use all the time. When you want to refute someone an in the argument. How does the media counter that term . First of all fake news is not the stories you disagree with. Its that even a story thats wrong if its corrected. Fake news is a story that it delivers a misleading come deliberately a lie. Its more like a weapon really than a story. Its a firing offense for a real journalist, if a journalist makes up a story or journalist refuses to correct the story that he or she knows is not true, thats a firing offense. We dont do that in real terms. You touched upon the technology in the introduction of social media. Our traditional media used to be the gatekeepers of our stories. How do you feel about that shift . It was great when i was a gatekeeper. I used to receive people, all the ideas for stories or columns or photos, videos and i was one of the people who would decide yes or no. In that position i had a lot of power. Its better now and that the gates are down, and anyone really can be a publisher or a producer to the bad thing is its a little bit harder, well, its much harder to sort out the good from the bad adeno what is reliable. I still rely on Mainstream Media to be my gatekeeper, even though i can go around the gates myself. Are we looking at this in the mines of what we call Mainstream Media or established International Evidence of getting the news . Our Business Model has been disrupted. The core journalism is still good and a strong as ever i think. Im hoping that soon we will sort out the economic problems that Mainstream Media has. But there is no clear solution, but i believe if we stick to our core values, and Economic Situation will emerge from that. You talk about accidentally getting into the business. What if the kid nowadays wants to get into the business . What is the best way of making that move . I tell people if you under some are job you wrote an algorithm that amazon is now using, i would go do that. You could end up working for a company that doesnt even exist right now. You could be the one that starts that something. A former editor. Thank you so much. Tv continues now on cspan two. Television for serious readers. Good evening. My name is way up. I am a student and the president of the jewish association. On behalf of the Students Association i would like to welcome you to our campuses evening for our
