The art of unplugging one day a week. Thank you for joining me today. But it is interesting given this moment of the coronavirus pandemic because then we could do things were to hang out in a bar or a cultural venue. And then we have a discussion. Thank you call me its so good to be here. And im glad were still able to make it happen this way to this very extraordinary which is all that we are and feels very similar to when we were in about 11 years ago this monday will be the 11 Year Anniversary of my fathers death. He died of brain cancer. He was also an author. And then within days of my daughter being born it felt like one of those moments life is grabbing me by the shoulders to say focus on what matters. And then to turn off the screen one day a week for technology shabbat. That was over ten years ago and the best thing i have ever done in my life in terms of a practice that keeps giving and brings balance. And i love technology. Im not anti tech. The other six days i am minute. With my background. And the potential of technology. And that potential of technology and what i was wrestling with ten years ago is a very dramatic moment i couldnt get out a complete thought was a constant state of being distracted and i didnt like it. And then to turn that off is too much. I am not a religious jew but a humanistic to and and with those rituals and the idea of shabbat which is a sabbath is a day of rest. And friday night. And then we make a beautiful meal and invite people over is the best of the week because nobody has the funds out now my daughter is 17. I cannot believe they love it is much as we do. Now that was all before the pandemic then of course the last two months we have all had to be online so much more. I do you feel it is similar moment life was telling me focus on whats important. I feel right now we all are grabbed by the shoulders. What matters your health, your family, being grateful and these fundamental lessons i spank my time thinking about. And its a lifeline. And then that brings me to my second point that so many people said are you doing that now that we are shelter in place . Like it is my saving grace there are so many benefits. We are so stressed about what is happening and what is going to happen and it allows me to put 1 foot in front of the other one week at a time. Its really weird because im a big planner we cant make plans but i say today is friday. Will make a lovely meal and turn off the screens. And so much more beneficial with the pandemic. Time runs together. That we are babying our bodies and cortisol and stress. There so many beautiful things right now. A couple months ago there was a show called dear human that but a lot of ideas in my book. But i was worried with my early optimism of the where that it would connect us because he tried that Tech Industry and the Business Model manipulates our attention to bring out the worst in humanity and the polarization and that was a lot of the cracks and then i ended the show to say what would it take to bring it back and what can we focus on . In february 152020. And then within weeks different parts of the world shut down. I see the web being used in so many incredible and miraculous ways. I have renewed faith in the web and renewed faith of humanity. And like everyone else my brother is a doctor and wonderful to be proud of him and all those donations i have seen to help people in the go find me campaign. And then to bring out the best of humanity and human strength. And then even more so and still craving human contact from other people. And then when we emerge from this. Not on our phones all the time because the pre pandemic people are staring at their phone. Teenagers together they all look at their phone. Maybe we are so hungry for true Human Connection we put down our phone. That would be a great thing to come out of this. I will share the benefits. And with that historical reference and the psychology. And so many benefits that happe happen. So right now we have so much better than thinking how can i take this time it has something come out of it to be very good in sustaining the rest of my life . So this is an idea some people call it the sabbath with the most observant and religious people will do it. The seventh advent day christians and sabbath that anyone except the one orthodox jew that i knew and then but what i have experience by doing this is my family that power is in the full day of rest that it takes a whole day to truly reset and reboot to turn off the outside world to tune into yourself. And to your kids and then so we are in a constant state of reacting and connecting theres a lot of good going on right now that i find a lot of times on saturday and we have created a society that doesnt value reflection. And great wisdom and that as well and then doing nothing and it was really important thing to do to do nothing so much productivity to optimize every second of the lives and then learn any language and wash the dishes. Just let your whole out even informing every seven years let the earth lie fallow so every seven days you need to let your brain lie fallow to have the necessary nutrients to grow and build things. They dont ever give ourselves a full day of rest right now even if you post on social media. It still feels like work. The other thing i noticed and then that is a first book. So what can you do . But looking back the last ten years on saturday during the week you get all this input but when you are daydreaming or washing the dishes to put things together in unusual ways and that is where creativity comes from this connection that is happening. And a professor at uc berkeley we found so much more productive i truly taking a day off. I feel much more creative. And then send another benefit. I think a more patient. And for the long term i know it saturday. Its good to teach our kids how to be board and not need to be stimulated every second. There so much research. So great. Way in your seed it will be so exciting. But every second just looking at your phone to distract yourself. But now i no longer look at my phone when i wake up and is my most creative thinking time
