CSPAN2 What Are You Reading With Rep. Rick Larsen D-WA July 11, 2024

Congratulations again on the terrific book that has made clear it does help us understand the very public figure we think we know and who as you convey as even more to him. Democrat from washington recently joined booktv to discuss the books hes reading. Congressman rick larsen of lf washington, what is on your reading list right now . It hasnt been long but its coming to the middle of summer now so im working on the third novel by a los angeles mystery writer and this is the third in the series. Its kind of a detective novel. Hes a private investigator and a lot of action and great relationships in that book so im working on that and also working on Frederick Douglass a biography published recently. Its a long book so im popping in and out of that one quite a bit kind of taking that 1 inch chunks. One in chunks. For the policy wonk in me one of the think tanks in washington, d. C. Is the lead editor of a book called china 2049 where hes brought together scholars to look at what the chinese economy might look like and what the challenges are between now and 49. It is an interesting kind of work related book. I dont read a lot of books for work. I usually read more for entertainment and try to throw in a couple of books about Washington State, my home state as well so on my shelf is a book by jim whitakers son, the First American to climb Mount Everest and its a memoir about growing up with his famous father who was the First American to climb Mount Everest so that is what im reading for the rest of the summer. The china 2049 book your district in washington is pretty affected by trade with china, isnt it . Washington state is the most trade dependent, about 40 of the jobs are directly tied to trade with countries all over the world not just china but it is one of the largest trade partners for Washington State companies and the women and men who work at those companies so having a fairly good luck into that crystal ball the future of the chinese economy has a direct impact on Washington State, the Washington State economy and the women and men who work in those jobs. A. Do you find yourself in Congress Sharing book ideas with your colleagues . Not all of my colleagues, but a few of them. Theres one member in particular we trade book ideas usually around which mystery we are reading lately so thats kind of where i take my interests. And you get to spend those long flights from seattle to dc in a book . People ask where do you find time to read . Five average hours across the country theres plenty of time to read. I can only watch so many recently released movies and so many Netflix Series or other streaming services. A good book and a good book on paper, hardback or paperback is still the way to go for me. Tell us about the Second District of washington. Other than being the best district in the country, it hugs the sound. Ive got the San Juan Islands and the northwest corner of the district, the city of everett at the south end of billingham and this district has beautiful views of the Olympic Mountains to the west and cascades to the east. It really is from a scenery perspective a beautiful district and also the district i was born and raised and my family has been in the region for five generations now so its a great honor as well to represent it but as i tell folks my family has been here longer than some and not as long as others so its nice to stay humble thinking about serving the people in the district
