FAIRHAVEN — The group seeking to recall Board of Selectmen Chair Daniel Freitas is proclaiming a victory after the town’s Board of Registrars certified that the petition exceeded the amount of signatures required to pass. Signatures from 20% of the town’s registered voters, or 2,384 signatures, were required for the recall petition to pass. According to notice issued on May 3 and signed by the Registrars Office and Town Clerk Carolyn Hurley, 2,521 signatures were verified. In response, Freitas is calling for an investigation into the validity of the petition. Attorney Ernest Horn, representing Freitas, said Freitas only received a copy of the petition the day after the certification. Horn is filing for a new review by the Town Clerk. The reasoning, according to Horn, are the appearance of “significant discrepancies” in the petition.
