The coronavirus pandemic forced the monarch to cancel three glamorous galas scheduled between January 1-5 as case numbers steadily increase across Europe. Traditionally, New Year's Eve in Denmark is marked with the formal dinners at Amalienborg Palace in Copenhagen. Denmark's Queen Margrethe II has received New Year's greetings in a socially-distanced audience after her annual galas were cancelled. (Danish Royal Household) It is a chance for Queen Margrethe and her family – including Crown Princess Mary and Crown Prince Frederik, and Prince Joachim and Princess Marie – to thank members of the Armed Forces, the emergency services, members of Parliament and those from other organisations and royal patronages.
