DeSantis touts bonuses for first responders at Fort Myers stop

Gov. Ron DeSantis announced Wednesday he will sign a state budget that includes one-time $1,000 bonuses for emergency first-responders.
DeSantis said during a news conference in south Fort Myers that the payouts will go to sworn law enforcement officers, fire department personnel and emergency medical workers, such as EMTs. About 175,000 such workers qualify, DeSantis said.
The governor made the announcement at the Lee County Sheriff's Office and was flanked by local state lawmakers and Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno. At one point during the 15-minute stop-over, he held an oversized prop $1,000 check for photographers.
"While some over the last year have been talking about de-funding law enforcement, we're proud to say we're funding law enforcement — and then some," DeSantis told reporters and a small group of Sheriff's Office employees that assembled at the afternoon news conference.
