The tension between Krishna and Kamsa is a case in point. Krishna embodies the nomadic cowherds. Kamsa is described as the dictator of Mathura, who overthrows an oligarchy (janapada). He is supported by his father-in-law, Jarasandha, king of Magadha. Kamsa evokes his authority through Indra, king of the sky, who controls the rains. Krishna evokes his autonomy by taking help of Govardhana, the mountain on whose slopes the cows graze.
