Drowning in hyacinth! Mula and Mutha running through the city has been unmitigated fact for the past few decades now, despite strictures from multiple courts, and it has now clearly emerged that the requisite authorities are incapable of safeguarding this precious natural resource. Now, once again, the water hyacinth is thriving in this highly polluted waterbody, not just blocking off oxygen to the river ecosystem, but also providing ideal breeding grounds for dangerous vectors like mosquitoes, which carry disease like malaria to signifi cant adjoining localities and their inhabitants. At present, the deadly thick green cloak of hyacinth is spread over several kilometres, from Bund Garden Bridge till Sangamwadi Bridge, even as the authorities ignore the same.
