Shanghai amongst others as they stand a very real chance of either being flooded annually all going below the tide level yes we did find that hundreds of millions of people live on land that were projecting to either but one of the elevation of high tide or the end you of global by mid century we also discovered that about 100000000 people are living on land that is already below the high tide level which means to us that they must be protected by coastal defenses so the Silver Lining to this study is that it shows that our coastal defenses may defend populations at scale and fact already if youre doing so but a number of these cities that ive been quoted in this study. And the Decision Making and the speed with which governments potentially react to oncoming disasters is very different to the rest of the world what would your advice be to a number of the Asian Countries that have been featured in this study. Well i think theres an appreciation growing in asia that every day every morning you get when a hurricane is coming saves lives and saves property and really the same idea is true for Sea Level Rise but its every decade with every decade of we cant get in advance to take action we are going to save neighborhoods and cities and so i think its important to look very seriously at these projections of increasing risk frankly any city which floods easily when it rains today in a coastal area is probably already sitting at or near the high tide line and the reason it floods so easily is because the water really cant get anywhere very quickly very easily because its so so i think places that are in trouble will be able to see that quite easily and i recommend that they look to collect even more accurate elevation data but look also to understand what options they have to respond which range from increasing current defenses to building new defenses to finding ways to accommodate some of the flooding where you can relocate in neighborhoods that cant easily be defended but i do think that time is of the sense to minimize the economic harm and the harm to lives and livelihoods if if were going to do this in an orderly way.
