SAN MARCOS — A 22-year-old driver crashed off state Route 78 before he stepped onto the freeway and was hit and killed by a vehicle early Thursday, the California Highway Patrol reported. The Vista resident was driving a 2007 Ford Focus east when he veered off the freeway just east of West San Marcos Boulevard about 6:15 a.m. His car struck a guardrail, then went about 20 feet down an embankment just south of the freeway. A witness told the CHP the car was not visible from the freeway. After the crash, the driver walked up the embankment. He then walked into the right lane of eastbound SR-78 where a 2017 Toyota Camry struck him about five minutes after the initial crash, CHP Officer Juan Escobar said.
