The former Vice President vowed to leave the country out of, quote, season of darkness, ready to take on President Trump in november. Hillary vaughn live in wilmington, delaware this morning where biden wrapped up the dnc last night. Hillary, good morning to you. Good morning, after 4 days of making case on trumps economy, joe biden pitching himself as unifier to overcome season of darkness and also blaming President Trump for not con taping a virus that he says has destroyed the u. S. Economy saying the president is waiting for a miracle while biden says he has the answers. We will never get the economy back on track, we will never get our kids safely back in schools, we will never have our lives back until we deal with this virus. Biden pitched practical fix to reboost economy and nationwide mask mandate and making ppe right here in the u. S. But some of the things are already happening in some capacity, state and local authorities issuing mask requirements and 3m and smaller manufacturers adapting to meet demand. Biden made it clear while shortterm promises to get the economy back on track are practical, his longterm Economic Vision is much more progressive. We dont need a tax code that rewards wealth more than it rewards work. Im not looking to punish anyone, far from it but its long past time the wealthiest people and the biggest corporations in this country pay their fair share. Reporter last night finale was different than anything that we have seen in modern political history, biden had Live Audience sitting in their cars outside of the convention center, socially distanced, taking in the scene like a drivein Movie Theater at the end of bidens speech he walked out here in this parking lot to honking and cheering, only Live Audience element that we saw, maria. Maria that is really interesting, like a outdoor Movie Theater, hillary, great stuff. Thanks very much. Hillary vaughn in wilmington, s p 500 hitting new record high. S p futures currently add to go that with gain on session of 11 points higher on the nasdaq, 13 points higher on the dow and s p also higher, the nasdaq on a roll posting 35th record close yesterday. The Trust Company ahead of Investment Strategy hank smith and also joining the conversation columnist for the hill liz peek and Editorial Page EditorJames Freeman, great to see you, hank, let me kick it off with you, your take on the markets right now, youve been cautious as we have seen record after record after record in terms of valuations but this market just will not quit . Well, youre absolutely right. It would be healthy to have a pause. Every bull market and we are in a new bull market or perhaps the bear market back in the spring was just a cyclical bear market in what has been the longers bull market in history. Only time and historians will tell us that, but we are do for a little bit of pause but lets not forget the tailwinds that are driving this market are powerful and theyre not going away. Extraordinary monetary and physical stimulus, positive economic momentum and theres no alternative, you have no choice but to invest in equities and theres a little bit of a fear of missing out but the tailwinds are powerful. We will be in the tinea tina environment for several years, some of the headwinds of school not reopening. Look, we have a little bit of spike in corona that softened some of the Economic Data lathe in july and early august, i think weve gotten over that. And the market is looking straight through all of these obstacles and headwinds. That tells you how powerful the tailwinds are. Maria we know that jay powell said rates will be where they are near zero until 2024, hes been clear and adamant about that. Let me ask you about backdrop and what the low rates are doing for the economy. We had big week for retail. You saw good numbers from walmart, target, home depot, et cetera, what does that tell you about the backdrop right now and have rates done to the economy what obviously they are doing to the stock market . Hank well its not only rates, its also the stimulus package, the extra federal benefits on top of state unemployment and theres a little bit of pinned up demand now that weve opened up and i dont think we are going to go back into a lockdown. Consumers want to pend and, look, retail sales are back to where they were prejanuary, you know, back in january, prepandemic which is extraordinary, so dont ever sell the u. S. Consumer short. We have a dna program that we like to spend and that is being demonstrated right now. We are just spending it on some different different things. Maria yeah, i mean, ecommerce is obviously soaring, walmart ecommerce up 93 for the quarter. Liz peek, jump in here. Im wondering how powerful the rise in consumer net worth is. This market has clearly made people wealthier and home prices are going up. Isnt that why part of the consumer is it seems like spending has reaccelerated. I dont think anyone was looking for that. Is it because we are feeling better about our net worth . Yeah, and savings are up. Savings are at an astronomically high level around 18 which is, you know, phenomenal, but look at what we are spending at. We are spending on home goods, tjmx but home goods off the chart. So our spending shifted somewhat, try to get a contractor these days to do something around the home, its virtually impossible. Maria yeah, makes a lot of sense because we are at home, we are spending more energy and time and money on our homes, hank, great to see you this morning. Thanks very much, we will be watching the developments, time for morning mover, tesla, the stock up 2 and a half percent this morning after closing at a new record yesterday, above 2,000 a share. Now this is the last day you want to buy ahead of stock split, this is the 5 for 1 stock split at these levels, tesla market cap now outpaces walmart stock this morning, up 2 and a half percent. We have a big show this morning and we are just getting started. We will slip in a short break and i will be speaking with Vice President mike pence coming up and discuss dnc and how hes prepare to go debate Kamala Harris and whats next to stimulus and, of course, covid19, ahead mission congressman Debbi Dingell and today is a big day in durham probe, big interview happening at 8 00 a. M. Hour South Carolina congressman trey gowdy talking about dnc and John Brennans plan to interview today with john durham. He invested in that a long time ago. Safe travels, we are getting in plane is safer than what you think. Youre watching mornings with maria live on fox business. Maria joe bidens message to america. He focused on moving the country forward out of a what he called season of darkness. I will be an ally of the white and not the darkness. This is a lifechanging election. This will determine what america is going to look for a long, long time. Character is on the ballot, compassion is on the ballot, decency, science, democracy, theyre all on the ballot. We have a great purpose as a nation to open doors of opportunity to all americans, to save our democracy, to be a light to the world once again and finally to live up to and make real the words written in sacred documents that founded this nation, that all men and women are created equal. This is our moment, this is our mission. May history be able to say that the end of this chapter of american darkness began here tonight. Maria joining me right now usa today Washington Bureau chief susan page, susan, good to have you, your reaction to dnc this week and last nights acceptance speech by joe biden . Susan maria, i can tell you that democrats are happy about how it went. It was kind of a high wire Convention Like this before and joe biden has history of sometimes veering off topic when it comes to speeches. He didnt do that last night. He stuck to the script and delivered somber address for somebody accepting nomination, a little more like a president ial address than a candidate acceptance address, suitable, democrats say to the moment that we are in. Maria do you think that the democrats got their message across this week, one take away from my standpoint was it was a lot of donald trump trashing and not a lot of substance in terms of policies that theyd like to implement . Susan you know, i think thats right, i think they talked about the case that they hoped to make against President Trump. They also talked about the personal characteristics of joe biden. You heard in the clip that you played talking about decency and empathy and much less specific when it comes to highlighting specific policies that they would follow in office like Climate Change and health care, thats deliberate because they are trying to appeal to Broad Spectrum of voters. Maria james, jump in here. James you mentioned somber address from mr. Bind, his advisers felt like that fit the moment. He said as president he would order people to wear masks nationwide and i noticed when he went outside after wards while outside, how much they want to make it about virus and add have beenating restrictions on peoples activity . You know, i think they think this campaign is all about the virus. This is a pandemic that that is redesigned the campaign in part because its redefined not just people tell the economy on which President Trump hoped to run, the mask mandate, he didnt use the phrase mask mandate. That is not exactly what he posed when he talked about he talked about having governors, encouraging governors to impose mask mandates but that has turned out masks turned out to be a big partisan divide in the country. Who knew . Maria yeah, liz peek. Liz i thought that there was a remarkable focus on race during the entire four nights and i do understand that we are in a moment where theres a lot of protest and certainly in the wake of george floyd murder, a lot of concern of race relations, i wonder if it wasnt almost too much, it was such a dark sort of dismal portrayal of the health of this nation in a sense. I dont mean physical health but the Mental Health of the nation. Do you think maybe they went overboard on that . Actually walker tweeted about, you know, making this all about race was going the backfire, what do you think . Well, i think thats one of the things we will find out. You know, this is, of course, a groundbreaking moment for the nation with woman of color on a National Party ticket. Thats not happened before at a time when weve seen through the biggest protests, street protest s this summer. Thats another as with masks, as with the coronavirus, that is another issue that really divides these two candidates and maybe we will find out in november whether they went too far or not. Maria yeah, a lot of street art as well . Susan thats right. Maria susan, thank you. Susan page joining thus morning. We will slip in a short break. When we come back big win for uber and lyft drivers, we will take a look and tell you about it then. Maria welcome back, well, clashing visions, joe biden accepting the democratic nom while President Trump rallied in pennsylvania both talking about the future. Love is more powerful than heat and hope more powerful than fear and light is more powerful than dark, this is our moment, this is our mission, may history be able to say that tend of this chapter of american darkness began here tonight. If you want a vision of your life under biden presidency, think of the ruins in minneapolis and imagine the mayhem coming to your town and every single town in america. Maria James Freeman, your reaction. James yeah, i didnt it was interesting to me that biden was casting as hope versus fear and i see message postally about fear in terms of talking all about virus and masks. Hes representing the party of School Shutdowns basically so i i thought it was kind of odd casting it that way. I also one of the themes of the week liz brought up, the racism issue. I noticed politicians like joe biden last night and a lot of people in our industry used the term systematic racism and asserted without saying exactly what it is and how its measured and i think thats something that is not for a lot of people going to be immediately obvious, not just giving the the recent elections of barack obama twice as our president but the fact that Asian Americans are the highest income group. I think if we are going to have policies based on addressing quote, unquote, systematic racism. I think the problem does need to be defined and discussed. Maria thats a great point especially about the wages of Asian Americans. Liz, look, it wasnt just competing visions for the future this week at the dnc, there are competing visions of policy between candidate, the Vice President and President Trump. This is like this is black and white in terms of what they want to do, in terms of Economic Policy for sure. I think thats right, maria, and i think that joe biden is going to be pressed to be more specific about what he really wants to do for the country and its all very well and good to say im a good person and donald trump is not and here is what i think we need to do, we need to be kinder to everybody. People i mean, trumps best message is we had a booming economy just a few months ago. We can bring that back because weve done it before and if joe biden is elected president , hikes taxes, 1 trillion, takes away the tremendous advantage we have from cheap energy by going to renewable fuels. I think thats going to be something people really think about before they vote. Is this going to be a time when i want the economy back down because of joe biden. I dont think thats going to play well. Maria yeah, lets talk more about this. We are going to take a break. When we come back michigan
