A COMMUNITY petition of over 1,000 signatures has been submitted to Ceredigion County Council in opposition to any future proposals to pedestrianise Cardigan high street. ‘Safe zones’ were introduced by Ceredigion County Council in Cardigan last year whereby the high street was closed to traffic to enforce social distancing rules during the current pandemic and vehicles were diverted from the town centre around the narrow and historic residential streets in the lower Mwldan area. Many business were unhappy at the enforced street closures, while residents on the diversion route said it made them virtual prisoners in their own homes. Temporary traffic orders remain in place so that the council can reintroduce the pedestrian zones if it deems necessary. It also held a public consultation which closed in December into the controversial scheme, though the results of that have yet to be disclosed.
