NORTH ADAMS â Firefighters have extinguished all hot spots in the junkyard fire near downtown that sent black smoke billowing over the city Tuesday and forced residents to shelter inside their homes because of air quality concerns. All firefighting operations ceased about 10 a.m. Wednesday, North Adams Mayor Tom Bernard and Fire Chief Brent Lefebvre announced at a news conference. The fire burned a pile of scrapped cars that sat about two stories high at George Apkin & Sons on State Street. âAll known hot spots have been extinguished,â Lefebvre said. âWeâve turned the property back over to the owners. ... Now, weâre conducting cleanup operations, getting all our equipment placed back into service.â
