Food and organic waste could provide a potential source of clean energy for smaller communities in Northern Ontario.
Calgary-based Eco-Growth Environmental Inc. turns waste into a biofuel material by using a proprietary technology which introduces the pathogen-free biofuel into a boiler system. From there, hot water is produced that can be used for building heat.
An Eco-Growth pilot project in Cochrane, Alta. found about 70 per cent of the waste in municipal dumpsters was paper towels. The paper waste has been diverted to Eco-Growth’s facility to be processed and heat its hot water.
