And how about those that have paid their student debt . Who do they do . Besides getting angry. Lets get to chad pergram with the very latest on this student debt payoff in overdrive. Martha democrats say eliminating the student debt could help the economy. Chuck schumer says it could happen by the end of the month. President biden has taken good steps in the direction of student debt but we think he has to go much further. We believe that number 1 the American People are strongly behind this hover wellingly. Legislators like schumer prefer to legislate rather than relying on the Executive Branch to to something. The white house agrees with Congressional Democrats on Student Loans but not on how to go about it. The Administration Says its not up to them. Mr. Biden told the Washington Post in december it was questionable that he had the thought to reduce Student Loans. The president has and continues to support cancelling 10,000 of federal Student Loan Debt as a response to the covid crisis. Hes calling on congress to draft the proposal. If its passed and sent to his desk, he will look forward to signing it. This money has to come from somewhere. When joe biden said i could kick around a 10,000 student Debt Forgiveness plan but he hasnt gone as far as 50,000. This is getting a little extreme. Who pays for it and who gets it . Look, i think we have to look at how impactful this is on the economy. You heard the point there from senator warren in the intro. We paid for many, many things, republicans and democrats without getting a good answer to that question. So i think congress has to find an answer to that question and find some answers. Theres plenty of places to do the offsets. The outcome in the pandemic, were talking about a generation of people that had to go through the Great Recession and now this. So its really ultimately about what will help the overall economy and the benefits that is much larger than the amount that were talking ant here in the near term. Neil well, im still looking at the amount and who qualifies for the Debt Forgiveness. So you have hit or her parents are helping to pay off a lot of that debt to find out. Wait a minute. I should have just held tight and not paid anything. Yes. Absolutely. I recent the fact that we call it cancellation in the first place. Its not cancellation. Its just passing the buck to somebody else. I also wanted to say that sure, it would add to the economy, but not more than it would take away. There was a recent report for the committee for responsible budget said yes, it would add money but cost 1. 7 trillion. I agree. I decided where to go to college based on the amount of scholarships than i got. I got to columbia. So excited to go and say i could never afford to pay this back. I didnt go. I worked jobs waiting tables, you know, sometimes 20hour workdays to, you know, be able to do this without having to take on that loan. Im not the only one who has gone through Something Like that. To now have to pay for other people that didnt, i dont see that how is other peoples responsibility. It isnt. Neil you know, david raises a good point, john. No doubt that a lot of these kids are strapped and have more college debt than i got out before the civil war. So i understand things. The thing i worry about is the precedent that this sets. If youre a college and youre used to finding ways to keep counting students and their parents, this is going to be another, you know, provocation to do just that, right . Let me be honest. I didnt grow up as rich as kat did. Super wealthy. Listen, im not confused, kat. 1. 7 trillion in student lone debt. 27 trillion the u. S. Is in. A average lone is 20 and 25,000 in 2019. Debt is an issue but we have millions out of work, covid that has hit the country in the way we never expected. If something should be done, you suspend the Interest Rate during a period of covid and beyond and perhaps enhance the forgive necessary programs beyond teachers and federal employees. Something needs to be done. Theres a load that comes on to people that they cant afford. Nobody expeced covid. Something has to be done and the federal government needs to act. Forgiving in totality is not something that i support. We signed up for it. Everybody went to college in some form, so were responsible for the loan in which we incurred. Therefore we have to pay something. But the federal government can step in. Im a conservative saying this. So thats for congress, which is democratically controlled. A lot of people voted for biden thinking their loans would be completely forgiven, which wont happen. Neil it does set up expectations. Bring out the point that you made, we have a record of forgiving debt and bailing out large institutions. We did that after the financial meltdown. Solid point. What i worry about here, Student Debt Loads are greater than 50,000. What is to say and who is to say, parents come forward and say i need more . Im swimming in 250,000 in debt. You have to pick up the tab for the rest. Then what . I think its a fair point, neil. The conversation here just today illustrates that there should be an i hope there will be some room for bipartisan compromise here. I think there are some conservatives that see some common sense in this idea. Who knows if it will actually end up at 50,000. Thats where its starting. But i think, you know, to the point, something has to be done here and it has to be paired with some thinking about the longterm implications. Are colleges going to raise their prices . There should be something done about that issue as well. In an ideal world, this wouldnt be a oneoff thing. Everyone has loans right now will get up to 50,000 and you go home and do whatever you want. It impacts our college, the rising cost of college and how critical a degree is to succeed in todays economy. I hope that that will be looked at as part of it as long with the question that youre raising. There should be some kind of limits on it for people, maybe just throw something out here. Maybe people have a certain amount left a small amount, maybe a percentage basis. Those are the details that congress will work there as they move that forward and get bipartisan support on it. We made an overture to the white house to negotiate with them. They have not been interested. Lip service, not interested. Want to look at what the outlook is for the Airline Industry. Is Business Travel going to rebound. Are businesses making a decision that they can zoom just as easily as traveling . You need a sophisticated analysis. Im hoping to do whatever i can to keep people employed in our country. I think jobs are a good thing. But you would want to know the facts before making a decision like that. Neil meantime, democrats are separately pushing to include this Student Loan Forgiveness in the Stimulus Plan. Barring that, argue it later on. Some as much as 50,000 for student loan dealt. The president is open to the possibility of 10,000. Again, senator, whether its part of this package or another one, where are you on helping students with their debt . Tell me to whom it applies . The neurosurgeon that borrowed 200,000 to go to Medical School but making money and can easily pay it back . The neurosurgeon doesnt need that and shouldnt receive it. The other hand, the person who took a job that would never have that kind of compensation may have made a poor decision about the university that they attended but nonetheless is saddled with debt. They may need help. That is a discussion to have. Again, you want facts. Unfortunately in this kind of bipartisanship but not really talk about, not really engage in it, not really do it, its hard to make an intelligent decision to know what theyre basing that recommendation upon. Neil you know, senator, even though its in the house, you have spoken out about the marjorie Taylor Greene situation. The house is going to vote on whether to remove her from Key Committee on which she sits. You had noted the fact that shes discredited the Conservative Movement. You went on to say as far as im concerned, shes not in my tent. Should she be in the u. S. Congress . I will leave that up to the voters and the house. Im a senator. I point out any time somebody says with a straight face that a jewish family set off laser beams to start fires in california, you say is this a satire . When you realize it was said seriously . That person should not be taken seriously. So the Conservative Movement is needed now more than ever as we see what is coming out of the white house. I think its time for us to be very serious not to listen to that, which is unserious. Neil now, she spoke up and said that she regets some of the marks she made. Shes gotten to congress, she hasnt said this kind of stuff. You believe her . What ive been told she will not publicly disavow them. Regret is different than disavowing. You must disavow, condemn, you must say that is not a part of me and not a part of our movement. There can be no ifs, ands or buts about it. That smacked of antisemitism. That is something that at worse makes Conspiracy Theories who could believe that . Nonetheless that somebody would support it. We have big problems in our country, big problems. We have to Work Together to get them. We need a conservative voice that is going to make serious arguments about how to go forward preserving that which is good about our country. I agree with my friend, bill cassidy. Her comments are wacky. They demean the whole congress, regardless of which party. I wish Leader Mccarthy had dealt with this within the republican conference. But when he didnt take actions, i understand why the majority is going ahead taking action. Because again, this is not about partisanship. Its about plain wacky theories. If there was any evidence that congressman was somehow involved with some chinese spy ring, that would merit serious investigation. I dont believe neil there was no investigation, right senator .
