Outside their home, the highpowered patriarch who found them makes a move to find their killer. And emily. Chaos at a day one of Tour De France. Cyclists crash into each other a short distance from the start of the first stage, and you wont belief what caused it. What caused it. We have that incredible video. First to a fox news aall right, rescue crews in Florida Racing against the crock in a desperate clock in a desperate search for survivors in the Collapsed Condo Building in florida. At least four people are dead, and no survivors were founded today. Now were just beginning to learn about structural problems with the building that inspectors warned about in 2018. Systemically, the water on the pool deck. The engineer wrote, quote failure to replace waterproofing in the near future will causes the extent of the Concrete Deterioration to expand expo e 9 11,ly. The mayor in surfside is worried about the sister building, the residents are wondering if its safe to be inside. The identical building and the same plans. I cant tell less residents i cant answer their question when they ask me, is the building safe. I cant answer that question. We need to be able to get the answer to the questions so we can. Guys, tragic images all day long we have seen of the rescue, Search And Rescue teams trying to battle a fire in that building as well as some flooding underneath. It is unbelievable. There have been no survivors reported to be found today, 159 unaccounted for. The good news, 127 have been accounted for. Youre looking live now at our aerial shot of that building. Unbelievable destruction. Emily, lets go to you first. What are your thoughts . Thanks, griff. Just the amount of this tragedy really cannot be overstated. The city commissioner recently said it may take up to weeks for them to actually ascertain the death toll as well as the injuries there. And is we can see the magnitude and, frankly, those pictures dont do it justice. Im reminded of some Community Involvement rescue operations in Mar Run County that i was a part of, and nothing can prepare you. No amount of training can prepare you for that kind of magnitude. As you reported, griff, these guys are battling the elements, a fire in the building, extreme weather, and the mayor told us last week that, indeed, while its, quote, too soon to start addressing now to 2350 that were still in triage the other building, the risk to residents there, he said, quote, we cannot rule it out and must start to explore that possibility. Tyrus, the other part of this story is the emotional toll on the families who dont know if their loved ones are okay. That part of it is just heartwrenching. Yeah. All and my thoughts and prayers go out to the families that are going through this. And as we know, as weve seen, when you think about back to 9 11, those rumbles, those rubbles, those piles basically end up becoming offenses with the heat. To ovens. The clock becomes your worst enemy because every hour, every second in some cases, people underneath that, its less chance for positive outcome. I think were really just tipping the iceberg in terms of the heartbreak were about to see. And i hope everyone in the surrounding area evacuates. I mean, if your buildings within eye shot of that area, i would strongly be like its time to move out for a while until they can look at the buildings around and make sure its safe. Why even speculate. And, abby, tyrus brings up a good point. Do you evacuate or not if your in a neighbor youre in a neighboring building . Yeah, this building does have a sister building, is so if this building, you know, experienced this, could it potentially happen to another one . And i, i echo what tyrus said. Our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone affected by this. We, of course, want everyone to be found safely, and i do want to turn the attention also to this Search And Rescue team. These Tour Fighters have been working firefighters have been working day in, day out. The conditions are really tough for them. Theyre three deep in water, theyre entering a structurally compromised building, and on top of that, these little fires are popping up everywhere. They cannot find the source of it. And, of course, were thinking about the firefighters as the air quality also gets worse. And for an update on the surgery and rescue effort, lets turn to Steve Harrigan whos live for us in surfside. Good evening, steve. Reporter good evening, griff. Initially it was Search And Rescue teams, urban teams from the miami area racing in to try and save who they could, more than 30 rescues overnight on thursday. Then theyve been joined by teams across the country, even some International Teams as well. A group from israel coming to help, theyre using dogs, cameras, listening devices, and as you mentioned, the conditions are challenging. Part of that building is collapsed, more could collapse at any moment, and there are a number of fires deep in the rubble that have been very hard to put out. Heres Governor Desantis on some of those challenges the rescuers are facing. Very challenging circumstance, and theyre doing the best that they can. And, you know, just pray for the folks who were impacted either directly or the families. Its a really, really difficult time right now. Reporter the latest numbers, 127 people have been accounted for, 159 people are still missing and just 4 confirmed dead. That number could change. Right now they are still determined, this is a surgery and rescue operation. They Search And Rescue operation. They havent had any signals all a day, but they think its possible, they hope, and theyre going to keep at it. Griff, back to you. Griff griff Steve Harrigan in surfside, thank you very much. Guys, you know, as we learn more about this, that report from 2018, weve learned that the building inspector was actually some 14 hours earlier on that building. And another quote from that survey report said this the main issue with this Building Structure is that the entrance drive pool deck planter waterproofing is laid on a flat surface. The water sutt on the waterproofing until it evaporates. The replacement will be extremely expensive. Abby, what do you headache when you hear some of make when you hear some of these developments about perhaps this was preventable . Yeah. I think this just sends a message that if theres any issue with a building, especially structurally, you these to address it right away. If this truly did happen in 2018, its now 2021. To that long on something that serious results in Something Like this, and what really struck me is you dont hear of this happening in a first world cub. You hear country. You hear about how these buildings we have here are automobile to stand up through storms and earthquakes, things like that. So it really is tragic. And just a quick comment, griff, what i was talking about before with all of a the Search And Rescue teams is the air qualitys getting so bad that theyre going to have to go on these selfcontained breathing apparatuses, and i called a friend in the Fire Department out in california, a true hero, and he said it limits your visibility in. You cant see necessarily peripherally. So if youre looking for victims, it makes it a lot tougher. It also adds a lot of weight, and you have to get out faster because youre not able to breathe as long because youre at the mercy of the air tank. So, you know, a lot to consider when youre thinking about this Search And Rescue effort and, of course, were just hoping and praying for a all of the victims to be found. Thats a great point, abby. And, tyrus, you were a wrestler, youre a strong guy. But yet if youre standing outside this building, you cant go in yourself. Youve got to let the professionals get in there and even amongst the professionals who are strong and tough minnesota and women, theyve got Men And Women, theyve got to come to the reality of what were looking at. This image, you can see this is unbelievable destruction. I mean, well, first of all, this is tons, tons of Twisted Metal and steel. Weve got gases, weve got fires, youve got the slippery, the footings probably terrible at the same time. You have frantic Men And Women even with training. You cant train for necessarily these types of situations. So, you know, Everyone Wants to help out, Everyone Wants to do the best they can because thats just human nature. Thats what america is all about. We all, you know, certain ones of us in this country who literally will put their own lives on the line to try to attempt to save somebody else. The bigger issue to me is when we look at 2018, when you look at the recommendation that they need to complete rehaul and needs to be completely redone and, yes, its going to be expensive, this is criminal to me that you would ignore manager like this for this long because, well, it just doesnt happen, you know . When things like this happen, you look at managements and the companies that own this stuff, and people pay a lot of rent and they pay a lot to love in these types of buildings live in these tubes of buildings. Beingtys the world here, it pains my heart to think that they were shortchanged like this for a horrible result, and this was completely preventable. Emily, were almost out of time on this block, but i do want to get your thoughts as a lawyer. We can expect lawsuits. Absolutely. And to pickup where tyrus left off, theres a negligence standard that actually does rise to the level of criminal prosecution. We saw that, remember, in the ghost ship fire oakland, california, where the owneroperator was found criminally negligent at operating this, it was like a warehouse, but he operated it as an apartment building. Multiple people died in a fire that they deemed preventable. Nothing is more percentagic than learning that tragic than learning that a tragedy was preventable. And a final thought on what abby was saying about the rescue team, thats where the sensitivity of the equipment and the dogs come into play. Is so as humans are limited by the oxygen and the weather conditions, the Rescue Equipment is so sensitive, it can pick up a heartbeat, breathing from someone who is unconscious, and those dogs are such assets, they are such force multiplierses. So im keeping my hopes and prayers alive that we will, indeed, find more survivors there. We will, indeed. And well follow this story and bring you anything if anything develops. Weeks after a mother and her 22yearold son were found dead outside their South Carolina estate, their high profile family is now offering a 100,000 award for information leading to the arrest of their killer. Maggie and paul murdoch both suffered gunshot wounds. When announcing the reward, quote now is the time to bring justice for maggie and paul. Im going to go to my friendly neighborhood lawyer on this one. emly, help me out emily, help me out. Where do we begin with this situation . Youre so right, tyrus. The more that we learn, the more that is up covered and, frankly, its starting to read like some type of legal action movie, but this is real people. Now, for eight decades this family have operated, frankly, a legal dynasty where theyve been successive prosecutors of the five surrounding counties comprised of over 3,000 square miles while also operating a highpowered law firm, and were starting to learn there have been a slew of suspicious deaths surrounding that family for some time. Most young known is that poor young woman, mallory beech, who died when the nowdeceased son, paul, was driving a boat under the influence. He was set to go to trial for that death, and that night resulted in him being charged with three separate felonies. Were starting to learn that he had this alter ego timmy. That when he would get drunk, it would come out and they would say, oh, heres timmy, time to get out of his way. He slapped his girlfriend in front of his best friend, this is according to testimony there in court. We also have learned of a housekeeper that died in, quote, a trip and fall at the home that the family settled with her and her family. And we also know that a 19yearold boy named steven smith who was found if dead of grew many injuries close to the family property, that case was initially rule a hit and run, and now were learning it will be reopened to which the deceaseds mother said i have been waiting for this for over 2,174 days. I think the bottom line, tyrus, is that there in that Small Community everyone sort of reveers and potentially fears the family, and none is left untouched in some way by the family and the sort of grip theyve had on that county. But as a former South Carolina detective said, quote, when you get so used to controlling the narrative and everyone around you, he said, youre not prepared for this kind of scrutiny from the outside. So i think were going to learn a whole lot more that might put this Family Square in the sights of suspicion. You know, speak of scrutiny, griff, as an investigative journalist, youve got insight too the, right in. Well, i was there on tuesday and wednesday, and it was actually the 2015 case you mentioned, emily, was steven smith. It was ruled a hit and run. Exclusively to the former state trooper todd projector who investigated that death proctor, and he says everything he saw pointed to not a hit and run but, rather, murder. He said the body was laid in the road in a way that looked to be a coverup in hopes that a car would hit it. And he said in his reporting, the murdach name came up more than 40 times, and he sought to speak to members of the family, but they refused to cooperate. Why is it tied to this double murder on june 7th . We dont know, but the state Law Enforcement division as theyre known, South Carolinas fbi, told me that, quote, based on information gathered in this current Investigation Led them to open the investigation again into 2015. So a whole lot of intreg, intrigue. Now, abby, i need you the channel your inner nancy grace here. I think weve got to start or where they speak out, and i want to get your gut feeling on this whole debacle. The person that did this is out there, and theres information however big or however small it is. Finish. Yeah. Well all right. Im done listening. Im not as tough as nancy grace, so ill keep my answer quick because i think emily and griff pretty much covered everything. Its important to remember as we search for answers, there are a lot of people involved in this murder and, of course, the past cases that we brought up earlier. So its important to remember that, you know, we have to remain respectful of the families while also searching for answers. And like you guys said, this is a very intriguing story. People are searching for those answers just because it does have to do with an influential family that dates back to 101 years ago. So a lot of twists and turns s and well see what happens.
