Starliner. As you said, it appears that its returning Back To Earth in a flawless manner, that theres got to be some frustration with the families and possibly the astronauts as well. This doesnt come without controversy. Controversy because nasa said, hey, listen, this just doesnt seem safe to bring them back home. But boeing had another take on it right . Yeah, there was disagreement between Nasa Engineers and boeing engineers. After looking at the thruster problems, boeing determined that the spacecraft would be safe to return to earth with astronauts on board. Nasa engineers were in disagreement. Some agreed with boeing that it was safe and others werent ready to go. There just yet. And because they could not reach a consensus, Nasa Officials made the call to return the Starliner Space Capsule autonomously and keep Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams On Board the international Space Station until they could return on that Spacex Crew Dragon in february. Lets listen more to the nasa feed. Just about 15 seconds away from expected touchdown. Youre seeing the ground there in your screen as we get closer. starn earth. That landing coming at 1101 and 35 seconds. Central time 1001 and 31 seconds. Mountain time at White Sands, space harbor. Wow. So there you have it. Missile range in new mexico. Our landing. There you have it. Starliner to be a beautiful landing, yeah. From from this distance, it looks like it was a perfect landing. There are sensors on board the spacecraft to measure the temperature, the pressure, the gforces. And so engineers, when they go over this, they will have a good idea of what it would have been like had there been astronauts on board, but at least viewing it from a distance. So far it looks like it was a perfect landing. Jackie. So jonathan, given that it does appear to be a perfect landing, the landing itself seems to be successful. You know, you cant ignore that there are still two astronauts that didnt come back on the spacecraft. So is it seen as a failed mission . And if so, Where Do We Go From Here now . Yeah, its actually not. Nasa officials say that they can still certify this spacecraft, even though astronauts did not complete every phase of the mission. They went up on it. They tested it in space. They werent on the return mission. They believe that they are going to be able to get enough data from this, that they will be able to certify starliner after they work out the bugs. And they said that this doesnt necessarily mean a lengthy redesign of those thrusters. It may be changes in how you fly starliner, in other words, changes to the Flight Manual rather than the blueprints. In laymans terms. Right. And so this isnt the first time that starliner has gone up into space. In fact, its gone twice, right . Just unmanned. Yeah. It went uncrewed two times before and never encountered those same thruster problems. And so engineers both with boeing and nasa believe that it may be because when you had astronauts on board, they were told, lets put this to the test, lets try the limits. And so they were exerting a lot of pressure, a lot of additional pressure on those thrusters that maybe you wouldnt use in a normal real world, real space scenario. And so again, thats why theyre saying that there may be changes to the Flight Manual, the changes to The Way you fly this thing and that perhaps with maybe just some minor modifications to the thrusters or perhaps the housing, theyll be able to work out this problem so that theyre ready to fly with confidence. Confidence with astronauts on a regular mission, jackie. Okay. And as for the astronauts, now they are coming back. Were hearing sometime in february. Yes, in february there is another mission going up. Crew nine sending astronauts to the international Space Station. Originally it was going to bring four travelers, three Nasa Astronauts and one russian cosmonaut. Theyve pared it down. So now its only two one astronaut, one cosmonaut going up to the iss with two empty seats, one seat for butch, one for sonny on The Way back. Now, they always like to have a backup for an evacuation. And so starliner was that backup for them. If they had to have an Emergency Evacuation of the international Space Station, they would have come back on starliner. Now that starliner is back on earth and theyre awaiting this new Space Capsule to come up, its scheduled to launch on the 24th of this month during the days in between, what theyve done is essentially rearrange the furniture, change the configuration on an existing Space Dragon thats already docked with the international Space Station, part of crew eight, which is currently on board the iss. And if they needed to leave, youd have the four members of crew eight get on that dragon and then the Cargo Area has been reconfigured so that butch and sonny, without spacesuits, would strap themselves into the Cargo Area and ride back with the four astronauts. Obviously not ideal. It would be cramped. Its a scenario that they would only use in a dire emergency where they needed to leave the international Space Station immediately, but thats the backup plan. They like having contingencies. And then, of course, when crew nine arrives, they will have a much more comfortable ride that they would take back in an emergency, but more likely not until their normally scheduled Return Flight in february of 2025. Yeah, they get to speak with their families regularly. I believe they get to speak with them at will. They can contact them whenever they want. And its interesting because the families, i think its rougher on the families when Astronaut Missions get extended. I know tmz did an interview with sonnys mother, and she said that she misses her daughter, but said that sonny loves being in space and at her age, this may be her last Space Mission and so shes no doubt savoring it. And i think any astronaut that you talk to so much time goes into training for going to space. But compared to all of the practicing and studying that you do, the amount of time most people spend in space is just a tiny fraction of that. And so any time you tell an astronaut you need to stay in space a little longer, theyre in heaven. Can jonathan, can you see the screen right now . And can you explain to us what exactly were seeing . Yeah. So were looking at Infrared Imaging Imagery of the Starliner Space Capsule, which is on the ground at the White Sands space harbor, located at the u. S. Armys White Sands missile range. And whats happening is crews are moving closer there, securing the capsule, making sure its safe. Theres always a chance because of some of the fuels that are used with the thrusters, that if they havent dissipated properly, there may be some dangerous fumes that youll want. Crews on the ground to avoid. But once they get the all clear, theyll move in and theyll inspect that capsule. If there had been astronauts on board, they would recover the astronauts and bring them out after the amount of time theyve spent on the Space Station. The more time you spend on the Space Station in microgravity, the more assistance you need. But of course, there are no astronauts on board in this case, so they will be looking at all of thos.
