Transcripts For FOXNEWS Sunday Night in America With Trey Gowdy 20240923

Trey: good evening thank you for joining us i'm trey gowdy, sunday night in america. Ryan routh wanted to murder donald trump he waited on the fence line of the golf course for trump to come with a gunshot range but secret service in his protection detail found him before he could get a shot off. A private citizen captured him on tape and later law enforcement apprehended him. He is facing federal firearms charges but those will likely be upgraded. This is the second attempt on trump's life this summer. Which he handles better than most. Actually the secret service did a good job, they saw the barrel of a gun, a big gun and it came out through bushes, how many people would see that, he was really exceptional to have done it and we've been going through a lot of it were very good but i don't want to see that two lovely we don't want to bring any jinks. The fbi is investigating a sewer state officials and board and a house task force gathering information about the assassination attempts there are calls to change the way we talk about politics and to lower the temperature to finally realize that your rational people respond to irrational comments in irrational ways but those calls are ignored at least by some. It is reality of donald trump is a threat to our democracy, it is undeniable. I think we should be clear that he is a threat to democracy. Do you think the rhetoric needs to be toned down. I think the rhetoric should be toned down absolutely. These are the facts he is a threat. It is trump's people that are coming after trump each of these have been white man. Trey: it makes us wonder two things, why anyone is surprised when unhinged people respond to this kind of rhetoric with violence, will there ever be any consequences for the people who incite others to commit the most undemocratic act of all which is killing your opponent, joining us a member of the task force investigating the assassination attempt congressman pat fallon from texas. Welcome congressman. This defendant could be charged to the state or federal court or both, congress cannot prosecute anyone, will your investigation go one or be temporarily pause where the prosecution goes forward, how will you do your job without interfering with the prosecutors who are trying to do theirs? to hijack one of the liberal terms, were to be robust come over to continue to investigate and we are going to hold off on releasing our initial report because of the second assassination attempt. We want to look into that as well and we are doing that now. We were told on friday with the briefing with the secret service, they said the president's protection is comparable but not equal to what joe biden gets. That is not what robert rowe, that was not the song he was singing actor director rowe what he was saying was not true, they had the same a complement, they would have searched the perimeter with dogs in a canine unit and they did not do that, that literally would've sniff that guy out long before president trump i got on the course. Trey: is there any explanation for why a former president who is the nominee of a major party to be president again would have a less robust security profile than a current president or current vice president? there you go again making sense, of course you should arguably the most famous person in the world, former president the leading candidate to be the next president and he is nationstate threats for what he did as president, before july 132 should of had the security profile, if he had we would not be talking about butler pennsylvania, mike kelly would be talking about it because that is where he's from the chairman of the committee if they had a counter surveillance unit they never would've let the agr building where the rooftop from which the shooter shot at president trump, that would've been secured and it was not there were hundreds of people on the property that day that had not been searched by anyone, it was an epic failure. Trey: stevie's lease was shot, there were moments, brief moments of unity they lasted a little while and then dissipated, now it seems like there is not a pause there are elements on both sides some on the left refused to stop inciting violence against trump and to be candid i was shocked that some on the right the attempted murder of paul pelosi i don't know how would people that a been hit in the head with a hammer but it's attempted murder, when did politics become so subhuman. I think it's up didn't flow if you look past her history andrew jackson was a pretty henri fella in the election in 1800 was pretty rough as well but there were periods of stability and were in one were exceeded up but you saw with the democrats were being asked about the rhetoric and he says he's a threat to democracy. I thought we are representative of republic number one and number two president trump is anything but that but they use the words tiring and dictator and comparing to hitler in things of that nature, you are right, there are some on the right that do this but it's far more prevalent on the left and it's very unfortunate. You are always somebody that talked about ideas, you said i don't like your idea or your proposal but you did not attack you did not participate in character assassination and the democrats have to do a better job in following quite friendly your example. I cannot think of anymore undemocratic than progressive prosecutors who ignore the law or call for people to actually murder your political opponent. If you go to use the word antidemocratic, those two things actually leap to mind for me. Before i let you go, fbi, d. O. J. secret service are they providing you enter committee with what you need to do your job, that's not always been the case of the past. No they are not being proactive i can say that there being reactive and dragging their feet and the task force believe it or not we stood up over a month ago and we have not seen the rifle yet, the fbi is unfortunately not been as forthcoming as they should be, certainly the secret service cover the backside mode for sure because there is a lot more that is going to come out in the next few weeks, they really need to change a culture over the way they do business to become the elite protection mostly they are not that right now. Trey: speaking of protection, i hate to say this but my experience was their number one job was to protect their own reputation, i had a lot of trouble getting information from these two agencies, that is not their number one job is actually to protect the life of the project he, pat, from the great state of texas thank you for joining us on a sunday night. Thank you, oblast. Trey: security should be bipartisan there are irrational people involved in political believe that cannot separate what's real from was not in the mental health opportunities, many are roman errata positions to act on the irrationality. Today the focus is on president trump and it could be anyone giving the culture we are living in, joining a senate homeland security member roger marshall from the great of kansas, welcome, the senate is known for being a little less combative in the house. Is there a bipartisan sense of the political rhetoric is getting out of control and if so is there bipartisan sense on how to lower the temperature? reaches you, i do think the temperature is a little bit lower on the senate side, i think that is because there's only 100 of us we sit down after the travel together and invite each other to our estates i think it's been turned down once the cameras are turned off but the 21st avenue cycle, social media bombarding you with algorithms that feed your own narrative. It makes a tough situation to be in right now. Trey: i want to turn it down a little bit on the secret service, what do you want to know from the secret service and the shooting in pennsylvania that you currently do not know what is number one and two on your list of things that the senate is entitled to but the secret service isn't giving you? we want complete transparency and a timely report but i know enough now to realize that the secret service is broken that is a very dysfunctional organization, we already know they had a bad plan, the implemented a worse communication was nonexistent, we know there's been almost a 50% turnover in the secret service employees recently as well that barely happened with senior leadership, that's why since day one i called for the white house to appoint a crisis management team to go in there and turn this place upside down i think of john ratcliffe, somebody like that going in there, cleaning house and starting over we know enough already and yes we need all the details and i would like to know the psychological condition of this assailant and what exactly his motives in if there is anybody else involved but we don't need to wait on that report, let's take action now. Trey: let's listen to the acting director talk about history and then we will talk about afterwards. Were at a pivotal moment in history of the secret service and at a pivotal moment in the history of our country. I have directed that the secret service embark on a significant paradigm shift that will redefine how we conduct protective operations. It is important that we hold yourself accountable for the failures of july 13 and we use the lessons learned to make sure we do not have another failure like this again. Trey: you mentioned john leave ratcliffe when we were special prosecutor in the secret service was under treasury but not homeland, do you think you should stay where it is and get better or be moved to get better? what would you do if you were the crisis manager that you just nominated john ratcliffe to be? i think we need smarter people than me to go down the different rabbit holes but there's a famous book that says you cannot serve two masters. I don't think the secret service can serve the dhs as well as her primary mission. I really think we should think about turning this over to the lmb the white house office of management and budget, they would be right there at the white house with her primary focus, too often we let our goals and her primary focus expand too much and i think that is a challenge here. Secret service is trying to serve too many masters and i think it's time you, my dad both same time i got a career police officer had the same idea yesterday saying is it time after 23 years is there a better home for the secret service? trey: i know you did not practice psychiatry but your medical doctor nonetheless which means you're smarter than i am, is there something that we should be doing for the mentally ill other than just waiting for them to commit a crime and putting them in jail. It seems to be an act but democrat people like ruth and others who need help and we should not wait until after they try to kill somebody to provide that. We are seeing an epidemic of mental health challenges across the country. I want to emphasize that most people with a mental health problem are not violent but many people that are violent have mental health problems they typically have an antisocial personality disorder, they have a disregard for bond order, they have no remorse after the break the crime those types of things, we need to identify those people and get them into our community health centers for more mental health benefits. Trey: 's editor roger marshall from the great state of kansas who also happens to be a medical doctor we look forward to have you back on updates from both secret service and what we can do about the mental health crisis in our country.
