A local youth literacy program is preparing to undergo a change in management in hopes of increasing participation and investing donation funding more efficiently. United Way of Northeast Georgia will divide Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library between Books for Keeps, an Athens-based nonprofit organization that makes reading materials more accessible to local students, and the Oconee Area Resource Council, another nonprofit focused on improving the overall state of Oconee County. Since 2012, United Way of Northeast Georgia has housed Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, a program that provides free books monthly to children from birth to age 5, in preparation for the kindergarten curriculum. The program has seen immense growth since its start, with an average of 2,800 children in Clarke and 1,100 in Oconee currently signed up to receive books each month.
