Gardaí are expected to interview Tánaiste Leo Varadkar under caution within weeks over the leaking of a confidential Government document. However, the Fine Gael leader is unlikely to be troubled in the short term after he was backed by his Fianna Fáil partners in Government – while Sinn Féin failed to call for him to stand aside. Issuing a standard warning that anything Mr Varad kar says will be taken down and may be given in evidence is a commonplace precursor to interviewing a witness or potential defendant in a criminal investigation, sources said. Mr Varadkar’s solicitors have previously offered that he supply a written statement.
