Gas leak shuts down part of Johnston Street, hazmat team on scene

A construction crew working on Johnston Street accidentally struck a natural gas line causing a leak and shutting down part of the major roadway for nearly six hours.
The crew hit a 3-inch high-pressure gas line causing a "major gas leak" while digging Wednesday morning in the 6800 block of Johnston Street, which is south of the Acadiana Mall, fire department spokesperson Alton Trahan said in a release.
CenterPoint Energy repaired the broken line. The lead did not cause any evacuations, Trahan said.
The Lafayette Fire Hazmat team is on the scene. There have been no evacuations but Johnston Street is closed between Aqueduct Drive and West Broussard Road, Trahan said.
